Nintendo Gaming / RE:the official "if i was running nintendo" thread

I think RA bicle has the best idea out of everyone's I've read.
FREE MMO Pokemon = 2nd 6 billion dollar chest
If not pokemon, then a MMO Zelda/Mario/Star Fox etc.  Actually, I think a MMO FZero would be really cool.  You could design your own craft and have races, enter grand prix etc.  I think even an online Super Smash Bros. would be good enough to catapult their next system to the top.  On second thought, they'd need both a MMO game and SSB online.  Most importantly, make them FREE, and easy to get online.

Nintendo should also fire whoever their advertising agency is, and spend more money into getting their system seen everywhere.  If they did that, they should stress the FREE and easy to setup online system and games in all of their ads.

Problem solved.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:New Killer 7 Screenshots

I always find it funny whenever anyone says "maybe this will finally get rid of the kiddy image" with the release of any "mature" themed game comes out for the Cube.  You know very well that it won't do anything, because there are a lot of mature themed games on Gamecube, and they've all done nothing too.  All we're going to be left with is a game that would have sold much better on the PS2 (see: Eternal Darkness)

Anyway, this game looks so badass and I absolutely LOVE the graphic style.  Whenever I see it, I get a feeleing of a Max Payne type of game, either way I'm sure it'll still be amazing.

i don't think you can assume it will be great just because blizzard is involved.

I disagree, there is no way in hell that Blizzard would allow any game less than incredible to use the Starcraft name.  Blizzard has yet to make a bad game or let me down, even with my exhorbitantly high expectations of their games, and I know they won't let me down here.

But as much as I love Blizzard, if the rumours are true and it is only released on xbox, I'm not going to buy one just to play it

I find it kind of baffling that Metroid is not better well known.  I mean, across all the Nintendo Platforms, there are like 6 Metroid games.  Samus has also made appearances in some of the other Nintendo games (or is it just Smash Bros.?).  Plus I've also seen on many "Best games of all time" lists has Super Metroid always somewhere in the top 10.  Anybody have any idea how well Super Metroid did for the SNES?  I mean, if the previous game in the franchise was so incredible, why isn't Metroid Prime selling in the millions?  The blame game has to be placed somewhere here.

Oh, and about the OoT sales numbers, gamespot had it at 7.1 million copies worldwide:

Granted this article was written awhile ago, it was still well after the N64 died.
By simple math, I estimate the following:
2 million in Japan, 1.5 million in Europe, 3.6 million in North America (as Mario said)

By "well known" I mean if you stopped a person on the street and asked him/her if they knew who Link or Samus/Metroid is.  My initial opinion would be no.  I've read a lot of posts claiming that Ocarina of Time gave the N64 a huge push in terms of console sales.  While there's no doubt that OoT is a superb game (my favorite of all time), I seriously doubt it would have the same effect as say, Mario.  EVERYONE knows who Mario is, yet Link would only be well known among the hardcore gamers.  Same with Samus/Metroid in general.

This is further backed up by the fact that Wind Waker hasn't sold well after the initial 800,000+ copies were sold (which would consist of Nintendo's hardcore gamer fanbase).  This is even worse for Metroid since it sold much worse.  It also didn't help that the Wind Waker TV commercial is utter crap.  Whoever handles Nintendo's advertising needs to get fired now (though the Metroid Prime commercial was pretty neat), but that's a different topic altogether.

oh, this is speaking only for North America too, not Japan, where Link is probably as well known as Mario since Ocarina of Time sold like 2 million copies there (though I have nothing to back that up)

ok, I'm done ranting

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why is GCN considered to be a failure?
« on: August 11, 2003, 11:42:34 AM »
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the N64 sold about 25 million consoles worldwide by the end of its lifespan.  The Gamecube has sold what, 6 million right now?  To me, the N64 was a great success, despite the crappy cartridge format.  In many ways, I would consider the Gamecube a failure, mainly because it continues to fail horribly in attracting the non-hardcore gamer to the console.  Say what you will, but the N64 sold so many systems because of:

1) Goldeneye
2) Mario and his various games

I'm pretty sure Goldeneye sold boatloads of N64s.  This was a game that attracted both the hardcore and casual gamer.  EVERY single person I knew in highschool knew in some way what this game was.  Even the people who I thought would be least likely to play games played the Goldeneye's multiplayer mode extensively.  I always heard people talking about how great and fun this game was.  Word of mouth can sometimes be a very powerful seller.  The only game that I think rivals Goldeneye in attracting the casual gamer is GTA3/Vice City.  I honestly believe PS2 is successful in North America mostly because of those 2 games.

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make here is that Nintendo needs another Goldeneye success story if wants to get anywhere near the level of success Sony has achieved in North America.
