TalkBack / RE: Revolution Controller Still Has Secrets
« on: December 02, 2005, 10:32:52 PM »
hey, imagine if the controller had a glowing color changing LED on it. You could dim or turn off the lights and make trails with the LED while swinging away... or if it could extend a la thunder, thunder, thundercats! ha.

i'm not sure what you mean, kdr, but what i meant by directional force feedback wasn't that the analog stick would move--though that's not impossible, either. what i meant was that the remote could rotate about any axis. This is not difficult to achieve because because of an effect called counter-rotation. Helicopter propellers spin one way, and the body would spin the opposite way if not for the tail rotor... and, yes, it could and would work even on a small scale.

about force feedback for the analog stick: this is possible, too. you would simply need something on the underside of the stick (the side inside the body of the controller) in contact with it to move it. this could be achieved with to motors so there can be motion in two planes, or it can be done with piezoelectrics that would pull or push the controller in any direction.

maybe it's got directional force feedback...

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Revolutionary Controller
« on: July 03, 2005, 04:42:38 PM »
you know, we all keep thinking that nintendo's new revolutionary controller is for normal games and normal gamers... but let's not forget that they are releasing weird "nongames" like electroplankton and nintendogs...

"change the way people interact with games"... could be that the "revolutionary" aspect of the controller/control-interface is designed more to draw in nongamers and casual gamers more than it is to satify/dazzle normal/core gamers... and you don't necessarily need new/innovatice hardware to change the way people "interact" with games. animal crossing is a game that uses a standard controller (doesn't even need a microphone), but you definitely didn't play that game the way you would play a normal game. you could only "play" animal crossing for ten or twenty minutes a day, and you didn't even necessarily play any time any day you wanted--there were specific dates and times that you had to be there...

gameboy micro. nintendo's philosophy/spiel behind that seems to be: whenever you've got five minutes, here and there, waiting for a bus or a friend or whatever, you could take it out and play. that's not really something that can be done with most games--if you want to make progress in that game. but it's a whole different idea with the micro; it's not about conventional gaming in that you're playing to necessarily finish the game, you just play when you want, when you have time, because it's fun..

i think that core gamers aren't necessarily the primary target nintendo is aiming to please with their new controller/interface. we might be pleasantly surprised, or we might be initially disappointed until we see how it works with conventional games...

the lego controller isn't really that difficult to make work, but it just wouldn't be worth it... can you imagine casual gamers and nongamers looking at that and giving a damn?

maybe the revolutionary aspect this time around won't be any single feature on the controller itself, but rather that nintendo is getting rid of the idea of any single standard controller that is supposed to work for all game genres, and is instead releasing multiple controllers up front, including a keyboard/keypad/remote control (for the dvd, web/downloading, etc..), and maybe a headset for voice command (for, if nothing else, a very user-friendly interface for the revolution's menu systems)
...thinking about the cube's controller, there wasn't really anything terribly innovative aside from the digital click of the shoulder buttons (yawn). the ergonomic styling was great, and wavebird was nice, but there wasn't a lot in terms of innovation there, hardware-wise anyway... though even without anything terribly innovative, just the layout/placement of the buttons and pads and sticks and so forth WAS put to great use in games like metroid prime and rogue leader..

Nintendo Gaming / RE: the ghost of the n64DD
« on: May 31, 2005, 02:26:08 PM »
hey, imagine for a second if nintendo's next true gameboy succesor could read these same SD cards... and were wi-fi enabled... you could potentially be playing a game on your rev, then do a real-time save, pop that card into your gameboy, and pick up right where you left off as you're waiting for a bus or a gf or during your lunchhour... obviously, the next gameboy probably won't be powerful enough (or the 512mb card big enough) to realistically transfer and run an entire game world, but it could possibly work with one or two levels--at least the level/world that you're currently in...
i think iwata or someone said something about being able to seamlessly play the same game on DS and rev in this way...

actually, even if you couldn't download a level to the SD card, it would be cool if you could download the game music to the card, and then stick the card into your mp3 player...

or maybe the SD card gives nongamers a reason to use/own a rev (ok, i'm obsessed with nintendo's nongamer strategy)... maybe since the REV is wi-fi/internet enabled, the SD card can be used to store bookmarks, emails, and other bs for nongamers... it would be like the harddrive needed for their internet/email crap. and the rev could be their quiet, affordable, (what was the third thing) console that nongamers could have a reason to own...
heh. Reggie's comment about what kind of device/controller can play nes/snes/n64 games.. a keyboard (emulators) comes to mind.

hell, with an SD card reader built-in, the REV could even function as an easy way to display pictures and movies taken on digital cameras( that use SD cards as the medium) on your tv...

...as far gaming functions using an SD card, i have no ideas... aside from saving pictures of your face onto the card using a digital camera and then using that image in a game... and of course, simply being able to supply your own soundtrack to a game (the way xbox does... or was that quake or unreal that let you do that?).

Nintendo Gaming / RE: casual gamers, nongamers.
« on: May 31, 2005, 01:53:51 PM »
well, all your suggestions and discussion center mostly around the casual gamer. casaul gamers are already paying attention to the gaming scene. it's the nongamers that are really going to be tricky to reel in because they're not even interested at all; they're not even AWARE of "control schemes" or any such thing... but the dk bongos -- that's a great example of how people who are nongamers can be pulled in: they see something unusual, they try it, it's easy, it's intuitive, and it's fun, so they like it... but nintendo obviously can't release specialised controllers like that all the time, and there's no way something like that could be the revolutions standard controller. unless they plan to have a standard controller for core and casual gamers and maybe one specialised controller that is interesting enough to make nongamers curious.. not that i want to speculate on the controllers.. it's just that i don't think interesting games are necessarily enough to get the nongamer's attention and get them interested enough to care... the dk bongos, motion sensing games where people move around a lot, etc -- it's easy to see how this stuff can easily get someone's interest/curiosity but... how else?

maybe i should phrase it this way: if you were a nongamer (if you can imagine that), what would it take to get you interested enough to buy a revolution?

Nintendo Gaming / casual gamers, nongamers.
« on: May 30, 2005, 01:23:12 PM »
As curious as i am about revolution's controller, i more curious how they intend to rope in casual gamers and nongamers (and if the "revolutionary" aspect of revolution has anything to do with that). personally, the only kinds of games that I've seen attract nongamers (assuming they're hoping to bring them in using games at all--maybe with quirky titles like nintendogs) are games like dance dance revolution, police 911 (a motion sensing arade shooter game), some boxing game (motion sensing game where you actually throw punches wearing "gloves"), and the occassional light-gun game... I'm assuming nintendo is hoping to attract nongamers with more than just their dvd function.

if it isn't with the controller, how else might nintendo bring in the casual and non-gamers?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: New DS Design

kurst, that's a nice design and decent drawing.. but you're handwriting sucks. nah, j/k. but get a better eraser..

the thing about the new design is that it looks really sharp and sophisticated now, so it doesn't really look like a toy / gaming platform anymore.. looks like a cross between a "game and watch" and shiny toaster/grill.. it looks like it should be more expensive now too.. hope that won't be the case of course..

/crazy on.
did someone say monorail?
...
"is there a chance the track could bend?"
"not a chance, my hindu friend."
"i've heard these things are awfully loud."
"it glides as softly as cloud."
"the ring came off this pudding can."
"use my pen knife, my good man."
mono..
oh wait. nevermind.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Nintendo DS Game Ideas
« on: June 11, 2004, 05:12:18 PM »
well, if this all is true about the 3d on one screen, then it's just another example of nintendo trying to force developers to think about certain things more... like when they designed the controller for gcn with limited buttons to force developers to think about controls schemes and implement more intuitive controls. nintendo probably is worried that developers will try too hard and waste too much development time trying to crank out good true 3d graphics on both screens and getting a good framerate rather than putting their time towards more interesting things, like gameplay ideas and controls. i don't agree with nintendo on this one but what can you do, right?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Game medium: CDs, cartridges, and the future.
« on: May 28, 2004, 12:06:26 PM »
it seems unlikely that console games will go back to using cartridges. it just costs more than cds and dvds. but if handhelds were to ever go with mini-cds or mini-dvds, a nice alternative to having memory cards and the associated hardware being built into the system would be magnetic striped cards. Bus passes, credit cards, and some key cards use mag stripes to write and read data. my guess is that it's pretty cheap... though i have no idea how much information can be stored on one... probably not enough to save large games, but maybe enough for simple ones.. hell, if it could work, maybe game companies could offer special cheat cards or bonus cards for registering the game or as part of some promo..

TalkBack / RE: Overclock Your GBA?
« on: April 30, 2004, 06:30:53 PM »
well, i think "loopy" has a working SNES emulator running on the GBA. It's not very fast (in fact, it's quite slow) and there's no sound, but it's still impressive that it could be done. I guess with this new development, this will be a little easier for loopy. Loopy has already written LoopyNES and also PocketNES (a great NES emulator you can use on your GBA... with the right hardware of course). I can say from personal experience that PocketNES works GREAT. Haven't tried the SNES one though.. compatability reportedly still isn't great (well, last i read..).

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." - Benjamin Franklin
Is that a real quote? Was he drunk? Are you drunk? Am I drunk?
HAHAHA!

sounds like everyone wants to "86" or "deep-six" nemo_83.. well, whatever.. as long as you don't deep_blank or 6_blank him.. this is a gamecube forum, afterall; there are children present.

sh1t, where are all the shooter ideas?
...how bout this? if your ship is damaged/weak (or if you suck and always play it safe), you can stay in the bottom screen--the touch screen. Then, when enemy ships fly into this zone (call it a kill box or no-fly zone or whatever. fvck, shooters don't need stories) you can reach over with your thumb and press the screen right where the enemy ship is and kill it instantly (or flatten like a bug or something)... like whack-a-mole, but with shooting... shooting crack up a... heh..

PS I'm not drunk.

3D.. yeah, i remember reading that and cringing.

hardcore gamers and kiddehs on the cube? hmm, sounds ... arrestable. but i guess the point there is that hardcore gamers care more about the game than the image, which is cube gamers all over. ...but then, as ugly as the xbox is, you could make that argument about xbox gamers too. ...though it's sorta different. ermm.... the xbox is ugly. bye.

"Note again that I think this entire release was thought up by Perrin Kaplan. While taking a bath. Hey, it's nicer to think about than Yamauchi taking one." --Elessar.

You. Sick. Genius.

Anyway... I know that gba in the pic is a mock-up, but it looks like both the dpad and the buttons are sunk down slightly. I don't remember the dpad being sunk on the nes controller.. any word on whether this edition of the sp will just be a paintjob or whether it really will have sunk down controls? personally, i don't like them sunken, though it would protect the screen. (I don't have a real sp, nor any pics of it..)

Nintendo Gaming / RE: It's official...

Am I the only one here more interested in Perrin Kaplan's quote than the re-releases? I mean, that quote is PRICELESS! If it's real... it's getting to close to April 1 to be sure, but.. damn.  "And if you aren't just dying to get your hands on the gnarly new Classic NES Limited Edition GBA SP, you're a total dweeb." --Perrin "Mallrat" Kaplan, Nintendo vice president of marketing.

But to get back on issue... Nintendo is definitely being a bit greedy/stingy here. Sure, $20 isn't a lot for a great game like Legend of Zelda, but still... they should be releasing these things in something like 2 packs, or 4 packs.. that is, 2 games for twenty bucks with the (front) boxart of the original games, one on each side of the gba box. or maybe 4 games, with all the front art on the front, and back art on the back, divided into four quadrants of course. hell, it's not like it cost nintendo much to re-release these games.. or am i wrong about that? sure, carts aren't cheap, compared to cds and the like, but $20 a pop?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Metal Slug Advance
« on: March 28, 2004, 11:40:30 AM »
I'm a huge fan of the Slug series, but I don't mind one bit that it's coming out on GBA (eventually) rather than GCN. What bothers me is that the game keeps getting pushed back.  First, it was scheduled for january/february 2004, then it was pushed to april/may, now it looks like it won't be out til august or october or something.. (according to ebgames anyway.) anyway, if you want to play the game on your tv, there's always the gameboy player or datel's gameport... if they were to release a slug title on GCN, i hope it would be a compilation of sorts, with all, or at least most, of the games in the series included..

edit:
how it will handle... oh i see. you're worried about the precision of the controls due to the tiny dpad. ... well, there's always the gameboy player.. or you could buy the playstation versions of the slug games if you've got a ps2.. i think ms1, msx, ms3, and ms4 are out on ps/ps2 already. actually not sure about 4, but it's either out or will be out soon.. and ms5 is already in the works.. as long as the shoot and jump buttons are on the gba's face (ie, the a and b buttons) and the grenade is on the right shoulder (and lastly, 'frontal assault'--send slug vehicle into self-destruct ram attack--is on the left, or maybe the select button), it should really be fine.. the dpad is small and slightly uncomfortable but it's still quite precise.

Nintendo Gaming / memcard 1000 something..
« on: March 26, 2004, 08:12:20 PM »
just read in the mailbag that nintendo has plans to release an even bigger memcard.. something like over 1000 blocks.. anyway, the keyword there as far as i'm concerned was "soon." normally, i wouldn't give a rat's ass about newer bigger memcards.. but i'm looking to buy a second card, so if this thing is coming out SOON, i'll wait a while so that, hopefully, the 59 and the 251 will drop in price.. or at least preowned/used versions will.. so, can anyone give a more definitive date/timeframe for this thing? a month, a season, what? (yes, i'm that cheap. yes, i might actually wait that long.)
