also adding everyone now. When is the next group play time?

I was going to share my friends code, but apparently the Wii mode in the Wii U doesn't have a friend code address book? Either that or I somehow deleted it when I moved everything over from my Wii.

Anyway, I went ahead and played in lieu of the retroactive podcast and the first thing I noticed was how many people are still playing this game. I thought it would take me forever to get into a game but it didn't take any time at all.

Second thing I noticed was how choppy this game is. Is it just that I'm so used to the buttery-smoothness of Black Ops 2's 60 FPS or what? Is playing it in Wii mode on the Wii U messing with it? I have incredibly strong internet connection, so that can't be it.

I still had fun, even with hackers trying to ruin the game. One hack (or at least I think it was a hack) I had to deal was every time I shot my gun, my clip would immediately empty and I had to reload, which meant that if I didn't get a headshot, I was done for. Annoying, but- haha- I still held my own against them.

Black Box and Golden Gun were my two favorite modes. Heroes was an awesome idea that was poorly executed. They made Bond was more powerful than the terrorist hero. And they also should not have given an option to the person if they wanted to be the hero, because nobody picked it half the time.

Hey Danny,

I was wondering what the motivation behind Japan coverage for the Eshop is. Do a lot of readers own modded Wii Us? Or Japanese Wii Us? I know we have the Famicast, so maybe there's interest there.

Part of me reads these headlines and gets a sad face when I realize it's Japan only. My immediate knee-jerk reaction is usually, "Why does NWR do that to me ???!!! (and IGN, Nintendo Life, WiiUDaily, etc!!)"

If they can just give me Castlevania 3, I'll stay calm...

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Land Price Drop Coming November 1
« on: October 24, 2013, 03:19:18 PM »
I'm starting to think that the best titles to buy digitally are the ones that you want to just pop in at a moment's notice and play when friends are around. When I'm having to fiddle around with discs, I can sometimes feel my family or friend's attention waning.

And more importantly, it's soooo much easier to lug the console around to parties with just a portable HDD than with five or six discs.

But, it's gotta be titles I know I will keep forever and are less likely to lend out. So no on RPGS and single player adventure or puzzle games going digital and yes on party games, smash, kart, and probably 3d land. Nintendo Land fits into this category. But, I'll wait for another price drop.

I can only go on the ones I've played, so just because it's on the list doesnt mean I think it's top ten material.

9. Zelda II
8. Twilight Princess
7. Link's Crossbow Training
6. Minish Cap
5. Ocarina of Time
4. Skyward Sword
3. Windwaker
2. Zelda I
1. A Link to the Past (not only my favorite Zelda game, but my favorite game of all time)

Why is Gamestop store on-line selling it at 59.99 when the press release has it at 54.99?  I want to pre-order it on-line but I don't like getting ripped off.

So, I'm guessing if they were to release a special edition 3 DS XL for the new zelda game, they would have done it in these series of announcements.  Man, I really wish I knew before I buy my first 3DS XL. I would be super bummed if I bought one now just to see a zelda themed XL pass me by in November.

If there was a new rpg game that was released today for the first time that had 16 bit style graphics and they were charging $10 for it, none of you would say jack about it. It's only because they game is old and most of you have played it that you're griping about the price.

I've NEVER played it and I've always wanted to, so $10 for a new gaming experience ($5 off thanks to deluxe credit deal) is a good deal.  I will for sure get my $10 worth back in entertainment value.
Compare that to Contra 3, a game that I have played and beaten more times than I can count. I will NOT be buying that game any time soon because I've played it to death. So, $8 or whatever they decide to charge is not worth it for me. But, I'm not going to sit here and argue the point that the prices need to be lower across the board. If you've never played Contra 3, I would say it's worth paying $8 for you to play.

Where does it end, anyway?  $5 too much? how about $3? How about .99 cents?  How about they give YOU money to play it?

Oh, and anyone who says it's good they can charge an on-line pass for used games does not understand the law of supply and demand. Or more specifically, the law of scarcity.  No, seriously. They don't understand it if they think on-line passes are anything other than a tax on the mathematically stupid.

You know right now I'm boycotting EA for their terrible attitude toward Nintendo. And with this new deal, it's like they're getting rewarded for their bad behavior. But, I'll say this one thing:  The boycott will end for me when they release Battlefront 3 on the Wii U that is not watered down, does not include on-disc DLC, and does not charge you to play multi-player.

But, of course it will never happen, so the boycott will continue...

It is a great game. It's one of those games where it makes you do a double take: Is that REALLY an NES game or an early SNES game?

Yet, there is one small quibble I have with it that takes it down a notch for me.  The up button. Why oh why did they map float to the up button?  This is the NES for crying out loud. Everyone, especially Nintendo (since they STATED Mario jump button was remapped to A after testing the up button first), knows you never map "jumps" to the up button.

Easy fix would've been to double tap A to float. So many lives lost, so many enemies left unsucked because I accidentally touched the corner of the D pad and floated instead of moved forward.

The game will be 70% content from the original, with added content to give characters and levels more context and narrative, plus other added features to modernize the game. Some of the original voice actors will return, as well as the cartoon’s original background designer. "We want to do what we felt the original team could have done if they had the resources," Jimenez explained.

Unfortunately, staying true to the original, no multiplayer DLC will be added to the game. However, fans of the game will enjoy a new, harder extreme mode while beginners will benefit from an easier experience.

This is what I'm most excited about.  Original voice actors, new levels, and extreme mode.  I'm not interested in a straight remake. I beat the original in one day (about 3 hours). While fun and memorable, I think people's nolstagia glasses are a little thick when it comes to paying $15 for a game that short and that easy.

And I'm surprised they are using the original background designer because those 3D backgrounds look nothing like the cartoon. It would have made more sense to do them in handdrawn sprites.

I like it when publishers dig through last year's offerings. Heck, even two years before that. It would be awesome if they ported Deus Ex, wouldn't it?

They ARE porting Dues Ex.

But, seriously, even though I'm supposed to answer with only one, the answer really is ALL of the upcoming games and games that have been out since Wii U's release. I wish the industry heads would talk more about why they won't port a game to the Wii U (or any console for that matter). It was clear why they wouldn't port them to the Wii, but now it just doesn't make sense from a technical standpoint. It HAS to be money/business related. Are we given an explanation why Tomb Raider, Bioshock, the new Ninja Turtles game, Far Cry 3, Lords of Shadow, and a ton more I know I'm missing? No, we're given BS reasons or no reason at all. Neither the devs nor Nintendo talk about why hardly ever.  We're left to guess.  At the very least, why don't they just release a digital copy with no advertising and just enough gamepad tweaks to satisfy Wii U owners and call it a day? I'd be happy with that. At least for the first few games of 2013.

I'm calling it right now:  GTA V will not be on the Wii U and we will not be given a reason why.

Now, back to the discussion.  If I had to pick which ports I'd want on the Wii U out of games this gen that have already been made, then I'd pick every single franchise that got its start on Nintendo, because that's where they belong:

1. Metal Gear
2. Final Fantasy
3. Bionic Commando
4. Double Dragon
5. Castlevania
6. A bunch I know I'm missing.

How bout we start with those.

And then for the new unreleased games or recently released I'd say Bioshock Infinite is the one I'm most interested in playing. It wouldn't have to be a watered down port like it is on the PS360.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 330: Amnesiacs Anonymous
« on: March 18, 2013, 08:51:23 AM »
Hey guys.  I had a question about the segment on Castlevania.  Jonathan mentioned how in the old Castlevanias, most enemies only took one hit to kill and he named one that didn't. I believe he said it was a knight.  Which old Castlevania games are you referring to? If it is the SOTN era then maybe, but I'm pretty sure there were more than one god-awful enemies in the original trilogy that took more than one hit to kill even with the chain whip.  Imps, ghosts, bone dragons, and axe men are some that come to mind. Heck those axe men took FIVE hits to kill.

That segment was a little confusing because you kept referring to the "old" Castlevanias and sometimes you were referring to post SOTN era and sometimes to the original trilogy. For an NES guy like me, The old C's will always be the first three games.

Wasn't Super Punch-Out already rolled out once before? And this free game comes right on the heels of Punch-out! for the Wii U Virtual Console coming out later this month for almost-free. Not well thought out in my opinion. At least it's not Mario Kart.

Mario Tennis on the other hand: Good choice.

Here are some titles I'd like to get with my coins in the future:

Legend of Zelda
Legend of Zelda 2
Super Mario Bros 2 (that game will get no love any other way)
Pilotwings 64
Donkey Kong Country (any will do)
Super Mario RPG
Star Fox 64
F Zero X
Wave Race 64
Grill Off Ultra-hand
Doc Luis's Punch-out

Just kidding on the last two.

The others will get my coins immediately.

General Gaming / Re: Backwards Compatibility - Good or Bad?
« on: February 21, 2013, 04:22:02 PM »

What I would like is retro systems that are released entirely for the niche market of classic game enthusiasts.  You can buy like the Retro Duo for example that plays NES and SNES games but it is third party and uses emulation.  I would love to have a first party option that uses the real hardware.  Essentially I want Nintendo to re-release their old systems for hobbyists, but they won't because they figure it will eat into VC sales and they don't like the used nature of that market anyway.  But I would argue that for that market VC sales are already lost in favour of authentic original copies.  There might not be enough money to justify manufacturing the physical hardware, so I don't know how feasible this even would be.  But with a lack of interest from the general public about BC, perhaps these companies should cater the functionality for the retro gamers that do.

My attitude is that if there is a market for record players for enthusiasts in a MP3 dominated world, perhaps there could be such a market for retro videogame systems.

Actually, the guys on the NWR podcast had a fantastic idea that would solve that problem.  Just come out with a system that has internet connectivity so that you have to buy the games from the eshop. So, no slot for a catridge/disc, but at least you still get the feel of those old game consoles without the price tag and hassle. It would appeal to people like me who don't care to buy a 3DS just to play retro mobile games (which is really the only reason why I'd buy it) and it would also appeal to people who will NEVER buy a new home console (think atari flashback). You could mass produce them for super cheap (with better screen tech and smaller for handhelds) and make quite a bit of money on the hardware, too.  Maybe even go the Kindle route and put advertisements for Wiiu/3DS stuff.

I think it was Metts who said that they could make them limited editions so it won't affect long term sales of newer consoles. I would buy ALL of them. Seriously.

Now that I think about it, didn't they do another Super Mario Kart, too?   Man, a tad repetitive.

You know, it's not always good to look a gift horse in the mouth, but the free game offerings lately have been sort of unbalanced. I liked the first few months with Majora's Mask, Excitebike World Rally, Fluidity, etc being offered that gives it that "missed it the first time around" feel to it and makes me want to spend my coins on them.

But, Mario Party, Mario Kart 64, and 1080- while they may be good games and all, are OLD multiplayer games with not much to offer in single player mode. When half of the game is only good in MP, and since I'll probably never get anyone to play those games with me when newer, better versions are lying around, I lose any desire to play them.

I'd like more adventure games, indie games, and lesser known classics being offered.

* Punch-out is a great choice, but two things:  I have played that game so many times I don't think I'd spend any coins on it, real or otherwise.  Also, didn't they already do a punch-out game awhile back? The one for the SNES?

23
Man, I am definitely picking up Trine 2! I've been waiting to play that game for so long. I would've bought it on PC but I decided to wait to get it for the WiiU. Now, I'm glad I did.

Question is, does anyone know if Powerup reward $$ off coupons can be used to purchase eshop gift cards? Because that would be a double bonus for me! Getting trine 2 for free? Heck yes.
