Nintendo Gaming / Geist: Coolest game style ever!
« on: May 14, 2003, 09:13:54 AM »
Sorry guys, but the concept isn't new.  A PC game called Mesia was released a couple of years ago, where you played a "cherub" and could posses people to make them do things.  This is just a twist on that game.

Good discussion!

I've been PC-biased for about 10 years (since about the megadrive time).  I bought a PS2 about 12 months ago, because I wanted to play a couple of games in particular, and I also wanted a DVD player...

I just bought a cube, 'cos I wanted to play Zelda.

There's a pattern here folks... buy something that does what you want it to do!!!!!  It's simple.  You want a cheapo dvd/console, buy a ps2.  You want a xbox, buy a PC , you want a brilliantly designed machine to brilliantly designed games, buy a Gamecube.

As far as gaming goes, each brand has it's own particular titles, you make the choice, and buy the console.

As for design, out of the 4 platforms, there is simply no competition.  My PC is about 2'x2'x1' & weighs a tonne.  My PS2 has got the quite possibly the worst bit of aesthetic product design in history.  The gamcube is fantastic.  It's small.  It's to the point. (an no, i didn't miss the xbox out of the design bit by accident ).

All Nintendo have to do is follow Nokia's lead, and release a cube with a set of clip on covers, then anyone can make their console look however they want.  If they included a power socket, you could have all kinds of neon boxes popping up

Another point here, is the quality of the components inside the box.  My PC has top notch components, 'cos i could choose them.  The PS2, well, I wouldn't agree that it's dvd playback sucks (i think it's perfectly acceptable), but it's image quality in games is incredibly bad.  I bought a quality scart lead, and the gamecube on a composite lead still kicks the crap out of the ps2.  The picture and sound quality of the gamecube blows me away.

Anyway, i've said enough

I should probably have said in my previous post, that online gaming really comes into it's own if you join a clan.  It doesn't even have to be a good clan.  The very fact that you're part of a regular team, playing other teams, changes the games completely (for the better).

The guy that started this thread hit the nail on the head.

I've been playing online for about 5years, and for the first few it was fantastic.  It's degenerated to the point now where i don't play online at all.  At first it was fresh, and the it cost a reasonable amount to play, so people respected it.  Now pretty much anyone can play, and unmetered connections mean twats can spend all day on their, without fear of their dad's bending them over 'cos of the phone bill.

I bought an MS Gamevoice, and have only used it once.  You get 15 people on a server using it properly, and 1 person broadcasting random screams and insults to everyone, and the game is destroyed.

Something else i've missed is the "story".  I'm really back into single player gaming now, and realise how much the plots add to the games.  GTA VC, Zelda, FF etc. are so immersive.  I'm just glad that id have reverted back to making single player games.

Nintendo Gaming / Metroid Prime Graphics corruption

I took it back to the shop, and they swapped it for a new pack.  I've played Metroid & SMB for about 6 hours on it without problem

LMAO!

I've put another one up, unfortunately for SMB as well, this time playing the monkey target game.  I'd had the GC on for about 1 hour or so by this point (the longest it's been on for without incident is about 3 hours).  This one also shows the game freezing with the sound continuing.

The GC is being boxed up in about 2 seconds time, to go back to the shop...  I'm hoping (vainly?) that this will cure my Metroid Prime freezing problem too.

Incidentally, in Eternal Darkness, the disc seems to click.  Sometimes it whirrs, and sometimes it clicks.  Is this normal?

OK.  Popped the SMB disc in, it got to the opening screen with the 3 charachters, and as the banana's were about to appear on the boards, it froze.  Restart didn't work, so powered down and back on again.  This time, managed to play through the 10 beginner levels, and got to the bonus level which is a long chequered floor, littered with banana's, and letters that drop down to block your way.

The screen started corrupting, gradually getting worse and worse until it was just a total mess.  I took a photo and video clip of the screen, and bodged up a little web page, so if you want them to see what a screwed up GC looks like, follow the link.

piccy & video

I'm not trying to slate the GC by posting the video, it's just for interest really, 'cos the GC itself is a great little piece of kit (WAY sweeter than my PS2), and Metroid Prime is a quality game.

Well, I just got back from work, played it for an hour and half to see how it was, and it played fine.  No freeze or corruption.  Then, in between saves, I needed to go out for some take away, so paused the game, and when I got back, it had frozen.  It was only on the pause screen!?!?!?

The corruption hasn't occured since.  I've hired super monkey ball, so i'll give that and eternal darkness a whirl tonight and see how they go.  I've got to get this sorted before I pick up Zelda on friday!!!!!

The only time i've seen anything like this before, is on my PC.  I'd overclocked the gpu too much, and it went mad.  That was probably down to heat, and the GC has got about 3 foot clear either side.  And it's brand new so that HSF isn't full of belly fluff.

Thnx for the replies.

I bought a UK Metroid Prime GC pack yesterday, and have already done the rounds searching for info on the game freezing.

I thought i'd just have a quick blast before going to work, and after killing the big baddie after the first save point (it's a big grey blob that crawls down a column, you have to circle straff it shooting it's mouth), the gfx went haywire.  The game was still running, but all the colours went totally corrupt, looking like it was on acid.  The game was then totally unplayable, the corruption was that bad.

Anyone else had this, or has my new gc got to go back? (i played eternal darkness for 2 hours without problems yesterday, so i'm hoping the GC is ok...)
