Ummm Sega Genesis kicked Nintendo ass in 1991-1993.
Nintendo's marketshare went from 90% in the NES era to 45-50% in the Genesis/SNES era.
Nintendo only started coming back in 1994 with DKC. but still, Nintendo was never the same after the Genesis ended Nintendo's strangle-hold on the industry. the PC Engine largely did the same in Japan, where the Megadrive failed.
the NeoGeo was a highend arcade quality system that carved out niche at the highend of the 16-bit era. it was never ment to compete directly with SNES.
After the Genesis/SNES era, Sony went on to dominate and Nintendo's marketshare has been dwindling.
The Nintendo GC has finally done many things right. Nintendo must preceed fiercely from now on. their next console must destroy PS3 and XB2, with true CG-type graphics. must have online and internet capability out of the box. must have additional features such as movie&music playback that Nintendo might not want to include but has to because the industry demands it. must have game demos included with the system on a bi-monthly or quarterly basis. must be in the $300 pricepoint and launch next to Sony and MS. must not charge any more royalty fees than Sony. must have CG-like Zelda within a year of launch. etc
