General Gaming / Video Cables, Which are best?
« on: May 08, 2003, 06:31:57 AM »
Thanks for all the great advice Rick!  With the new TV I can actually see TIE fighters!! It's brought a whole new life to all of my games, I'm gonna have to replay the Wind Waker, Metroid Prime, Eternal Darkness, and Rogue Squadron.  Thanks again.

General Gaming / Video Cables, Which are best?
« on: May 07, 2003, 07:10:46 AM »
Thanks for the super fast response...

Basically I'm choosing between 2 TVs... one TV (a Daewoo, flat 27") has 1 component and 1 s-video connection, and the other TV (a Sanyo flat 27") has 2 s-video connections.  Neither TV supports progressive scan (or supports HDTV), so I guess the question now is:

On a side-by-side comparision can you tell a major difference between component and s-video? I mean does it really matter?

The Sanyo seems to be a better quality TV (better brand name, more features, better remote, cheaper, etc.) ... the only pro of the Daewoo is this component connection.  Is that enough to sway my decision?
Thanks!

I'm new to this forum, so I apologize if this has been covered before... I have a simple question about Gamecube video hookups.

Looking at the online store it seems as though I can hook up the Gamecube to my TV one of four ways:

1.  RF Modulator/Switch
2.  Stereo A/V cables (yellow, red, white)
3.  Component Video Cable (red, green, blue)
4.  S-Video (S-VHS) cable

Which one of these will give the best picture? I would have guessed that the S-Video gives the best picture, but it is priced much lower than the Component Video ($15.95 compared to $29.95).

Other questions I have include:
- Does it make that much of a difference?
- My TV only has one S-Video input, are there splitters available that would allow me to hook up my DVD player and Gamecube to the same port?

Any advice would be great! I'm buying a new TV today and can't wait to hook up the Gamecube.

Thanks!

Thanks Chiphead... I've gotten over 100 coins on a lot of the individual cups (and even placed first overall) on a lot of tracks... are there any other details that you're missing? Where do the unlocked tracks appear? What screen?

I first choose Mario GP, then I choose a speed setting (let's say 50cc since those are the tracks I've gotten over 100 coins on), then I choose a character, then I choose a cup that I've gotten over a 100 coins on... but I don't see any SNES tracks!!

I'm sorry if I'm being a pest about this, but this is really perplexing me... I think I'm just missing something minor.

Thanks!

PS: To make this more relevant to the thread, I'll throw my 2 cents in about the different versions. I first played the SNES kart and absolutely loved it... the track design was truly excellent.  The N64 version was also amazing.  While it was a lot easier, I felt that it gave me more for my money because I was able to play all of the included tracks (I never saw some of the final tracks on the SNES).  I think that the GBA version is a perfect blend of the two.  I like the new sprites and I really like the added strategy of the offensive/defensive weapons (dragging items to block, and the three-shell items).  I think that the GBA version is the best that one could hope for on the GBA. I don't think the GBA has the power to do 3D objects well in a racing game.  The game runs so smooth, the music is great, the backgrounds are nice... I wouldn't sacrifice all of that for a few hills and 3D jumps.

My only gripe about the GBA/SNES versions are the coins... but it adds a bit more strategy and a lot of replay (with the rankings system). I really hope that the coins don't show up in the new GC version... having to worry about driving, using weapons, switching drivers, AND picking up coins would be a bit much.  What I would like to see is the inclusion of coins as an alternative mode in gameplay, similar to the rings mode in Mario Golf, Mario Tennis and the coin mode in Super Smash Bros.: Melee.

Speaking of the unlocking the SNES levels, I've been having a hard time doing so.  I've read a couple of FAQs and none of them reach a consesus about how to do it. Some say you have to get 100 coins, other say you need an A rating (surprisingly, these don't necessarily go hand in hand).  Some say you can unlock them for each speed level and each individual cup... others say you need to unlock them as a group.  A few FAQs mention how to access a special screen where these levels are displayed (L or R buttons, I believe), and others just say these levels pop up.  I am so confused!
So far I've gotten 100 coins, a gold trophy, and a decent ranking (C or above; one A) on all of the cups in the 50cc speed setting (I just got a SP, so I'm new to the GBA) ... and nothing has unlocked the SNES tracks!!! Does anyone know any details about this and can help me out? I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Nintendo Gaming / Animal Crossing Pattern Design Question
« on: February 25, 2003, 04:10:28 AM »
That didn't really answer my question, but it was REALLY cool.  Thanks a lot.  In retrospect, I guess this was a dumb question. It's sorta obvious that there's no way a password system could detail every color of the grid, so there's no way to send someone a pattern.  I still don't know why I can't just give another animal in my village my pattern... there's got to be a way to do it.  Then again, maybe the only way is to leave your design at the pattern store and hope someone likes it and wears it around.

Nintendo Gaming / Animal Crossing Pattern Design Question
« on: February 24, 2003, 09:19:35 AM »
Does anyone know how (or if) you can give an animal (or someone via secret code) one of your original designs? I have used my pattern on my clothes, and when trying to exchange it with different clothes, it goes back to my pattern inventory.  Is there a way to trade designs? Thanks in advance.
