General Gaming / Re: Shocktober 2020: Play scary games here.
« on: October 12, 2020, 06:14:04 PM »
I mentioned a few scary games to play earlier but I just started Hi-Score Girl on Netflix and the first episode features a lot of classic arcade games including Splatterhouse. I then remembered I could play it on the Namco Museum Arcade Pac https://www.nintendoworldreport.com/game/48507/namco-museum-arcade-pac-switch.
This game is quite scary for an eighties arcade game. The music is creepy and the visuals are quite graphic. I had always assumed it was cartoony, but I don't know of anything this dark and mature of the same time period. The games controls are tight and the enemy designs are creative and varied. It gets difficult in stage 3 but with unlimited credits/continues you can get through the game without resorting to save states. If you have the Namco Museum on switch I recommend checking this game out as part of Shocktober 2020.
Also, I watched the second episode of Hi-Score Girl and there are a number of TurboGrafx-16 games featured. One of them was, you guessed it, Splatterhouse. I checked the TG16 mini box and sure enough it is on there. Once I finish the arcade game I will be playing through the TG16 port for comparison and report back with some final thoughts.

My one memory of LittleBigPlanet3 is having a game breaking bug half-way through. With no way to clear the save I had to start over using another user profile  >:(. Remember to install those day 1 updates before beginning your next gen games kiddos. Surely Sumo Digital learned their lesson with LittleBigPlanet4...wait they are calling it what? I guess I am buying Sackboy: A Big Adventure

Alright Mr. Bungle, don't screw this up. Remember what self-proclaimed god of Safe Words, Khushrenada taught you:
It's very simple. I ask myself, if I was the person choosing the bomb word, what would I pick? Then I select that choice because the other person obviously isn't me and therefore won't have selected it.

Okay, so if I was Khushrenada, what would I pick?  ???
Oh that's easy, Khushredana picked "Destruction AllStars". So if I was Khushrenada I would pick Destruction AllStars. Man, I hope I followed those instructions correctly.

I just re-subbed to Netflix after a year hiatus and I am catching up on what I missed. I am just finishing Castlevania season 3. It is really good. I think it keeps getting better. They do a great job of balancing all the different story lines. I was explaining the show to a friend and realized there are not many serious animated shows for adults made in the US. Maybe this is the appeal of Anime to western audiences. Are there some other shows like this I am missing out on?

Yeah, I don't know Mr. Bungle very well. Is this his first game?
Is it that obvious? :-[
My thought process was the same as yours. I had never heard of Godfall so picked that one.
Now if everyone else could explain how they pick the bomb word it would be very helpful  ;)

Alien Isolation is probably my favorite scary game. I have been meaning to replay it since I got the PS4 camera as you can have it detect your movement and sound. I am also considering ZombiU or State of Decay 2. I just need to finish The Wonderful 101 first.

I would say I found Hard Mode in Tropical Freeze more enjoyable then Normal because you could at least choose between which Kong you wanted to play as before each level. \
I actually forgot this. I played through the hard mode with only DK.  :o  I guess that was super hard mode.

I did a few time trials but I found I could only get through one a day. I am just not that into speedrunning, even with games I like to replay.

Even though my monitor does not support 4K and I just plan to play words compatible with Safe Words 15, I cannot help but feel compelled to give my money to the NWR corporate overlords and be a part of this exciting next gen conversation!

I am one of the deviants who started with Sunshine. But as Greg mentioned it is the first re-release. Having missed the Gamecube generation I never played it. I thought about getting a Gamecube disc to play on my Wii but they are pricey. My initial thoughts are that it controls better than 64 but not as good as Galaxy, which seems obvious given the lineage. I may change my tune after attempting to 100% it.

911
The only Bethesda game I have played is Skyrim VR for PSVR. What I like most about Bethesda is their initiatives with 3D and VR in their games. I hope this acquisition does not mitigate those endeavors going forward as it seems X Box is playing it safe with games since the Kinect crash.

I can see people's complaints with Retro bosses but I have found they are really enjoyable. I am also a glutton for punishment. If I may bring up again my recent 200% run of DKCTP  8). In hard mode the final boss requires a perfect run since you are going in with just one heart and you only have DK, no helper monkeys. I probably spent 5-6 hours just repeating that boss fight.

But Khush, what did you think of the rocket barrel and mine cart levels?
Any favorite level(s)?
Favorite songs?
Were you getting all the puzzle pieces?

Yooka-Laylee had Mine Cart levels / moments. Are you talking the second one because that I haven't played to know what it does and doesn't have.
Yes, my bad I was thinking of the sequel, Impossible Lairl. The mine cart levels in DKC are the ones I love so I was hoping Playtonic would have put some in. Impossible Lair is still a great game and I highly recommend it.

Now that you mention it, I do remember mine cart levels in DK 64 and Yooka Laylee. I don't think the 3D version has been done that well yet.

I can't wait to hear what you think of it. Those mine cart levels are sooo good. I want a whole game of mine cart levels! I can't believe Yooka Laylee didn't have any  >:(

A Reader Review?! That deserves a couple Honk!s!! (We've broken the English language!)

Nicely done. I feel you sheep example shows why I've shied away from these games. I just think I'd struggle to figure out what the game is asking for or would accept as a solution for a puzzle. I'd probably keep relying on methods that worked rather than trying to come up with creative answers that could keep failing. Still, I should probably give the games I've got a shot at some point since they don't seem to require a long period of play.

Thanks for the accolades Khush. Hopefully the site is keeping a record of these honks somewhere.
Definitely gives the game a try if you have it. Do it when your feeling especially "creative"  8)

I am not surprised by the hardware sales. There have been some substantial restocks of the switch online. I was finally able to get a second main console and a switch lite for a friend after looking for months. At the same time they are still hard to find and sold out most of the time. On amazon right now the only option for retail price is an import from the UK  :o

You may love Galaxy 1 but are you saying you don't like Galaxy 2 a lot as well? You are indifferent / meh about it?
Good question. I love all the Mario games I have played including Galaxy 2. I would still give it a 10/10. I just find most people prefer the sequel over the original while I am the other way around.

919
However, another thing this thread has shown me is that Galaxy 2 seems to be the big 3D Mario unifier. Everyone seems to love it (or at least like it a lot), everyone wishes it was included and Nintendo seems to have left it out just to make the fanbase turn on itself over the other three games included.
I actually far prefer Super Mario Galaxy to the sequel. The story and hub world really worked for me. Rosalina is also my favorite Mario character now!

I guess it's time for me to finally get around to playing my unopened copy of Hyrule Warriors.

Namco Meuseum - Should have waited for price drop
Bought this solely for Pacman VS, but been more of a pain to get a second person with a Switch to play it fully. Should have waited for a sale, but I'm sure eventually we'll make up the "play value" so to speak

I waited and got the physical version for $20 on a price drop which seems worth it to me. I have only dabbled with dig-dug and pac-man but both are really strong arcade ports and the tate mode makes them great in table top mode.

Obviously these are ports of arcade games, but is this collection ported from a previous generation?

Okami HD - Should have waited
I bought this on sale at least, but have not even booted it yet. I'll eventually replay it, but who knows when I'll get around to it.

I did not catch this on Wii but played through the HD version on Switch and loved it. The game is great and the updated visuals are gorgeous. I played with split joy-con and used the gyro controls to draw the sigils. I found this to be pretty accurate and responsive and had fun with it. I also have the physical game imported from Japan which is really cool.

This was such a unique and clear concept. I can't believe the franchise is dormant now, and that 5th Cell is on life support :'(
Yeah, the recent Scribblenaut's Showdown was developed by Shiver and it's poor reception has not done the franchise any favors. On top of that 5th cell's mobile Scribblenauts and crowfunded Anchor's in the Drift were both cancelled.

Two votes for Scribblenauts is enough then. I will report back on it soon.
I did not finish this in August but came close. I posted some notes in the Reader Reviews thread.

Did you find yourself going back to the same 5-10 options which had proven to work, or are there incentives to keep trying new words and combinations?

It was a little bit of both. I added the adjective "flying" to Maxwell quite a bit to reach the different puzzles. When I got fed up with some I would overuse the adjective "sleeping" on foes. I tried for the most part to always think of something new or novel. This may be why my playtime was longer than average. I would sit there for 5 minutes trying to think of some funny object to use rather than the obvious one. I think this would be cool if there was an audience to appreciate my creativity, but alas I was playing solo. Occasionally I would spend 5 minutes and come up with a great idea but then the game would not accept it and that was frustrating but those moments were surprisingly rare. I think the programmers did a pretty good job of connecting all the sets of objects with cool reactions.

One example stands out. There was a sheep and it wanted to fit in with the Dinosaurs. I spent a half hour with the object editor making it look, act, and produce reactions for a dinosaur and yet the puzzle was not solved. Then I just added the adjective "giant" to the sheep and it instantly worked. Like I said, that is the exception and not the norm in the game, but those moments sting a little.

My stance is similar to Khushrenada's for a lot of these games, though I appear to have played more of them   8)
I find that for most ports from Wii U or 3DS I would rather play them on their original hardware. I think MK8 is the one exception which I find controls better on switch and I really like the battle mode, There could be some argument that Smash Ultimate, Splatoon 2, and Mario Maker 2 are enhanced ports. I bought all three of these on switch and Mario Maker is the only one I prefer on Wii U because of the Gamepad functionality.

I have bought second copies of a couple of third party games as well:
  • Mega Man Legacy Collection-I will usually buy any Mega Man games released
  • Shantae Half-Genie Hero - The Switch version cost less than the DLC on Wii U so I justified buying it again
  • Guacamelee - I had the first game on Wii U but bought the two-pack on switch to get the physical cartridge
  • Runbow - While I can't imagine playing multiplayer anywhere other than Wii U, it was on sale for a few dollars on switch

I think a contributing factor to these purchase decisions is your console set up. I have a decent amount of space and have all my consoles hooked up at all times. This makes it easy to use them all at any given time. If I only had one console hooked up to my TV then I might want to buy everything again on that one system.
