TalkBack / RE: Twin Snakes Coming Next Week
« on: March 02, 2004, 11:06:22 AM »
Apparently there's a commercial out, but I don't know if it's Japanese or not.  There was Japanese text, but English dialogue.  Check the official website.

And of course I'll be picking this up the moment it arrives.

Bah, I still don't think that it deserves so many Oscars, but I'll agree that it definetly deserves the technical awards.

We have also seen the FMVs and know what to expect from it. I am sure anyone who watched the 27 min vid loved it and can see that Gamepro are a bunch of F**s.

They also said that the framerate is above average ( which aint very good ) and that it is only a minor problem.

I tend to believe my dog Milo when he says a game is good or bad ...and he is saying MGS TS is a AWSOME game.

I'm just wondering what you've done to that poor animal.

Framerate-wise, they're most likely just overstating.  SK has confirmed that while the game doesn't run at a flawless 60 fps, the drops in the framerate are very few and only noticable if you're looking for them.  It's most likely they're exaggerating this, or they have an older copy of the game.

I would expect such a review from GamePro.  They've been biased against Nintendo for quite a while.  I wouldn't think anything of it.

There's always those guys selling the air guitar, two Asian slaves, that ugly guy's virginity, the inflatable wedding chapel, and so much more...

Wish I had links to those.

Interesting website, although it's a little lacking when it comes to information.  I really hate Flash websites with no real content and such.  This is one of them.  I mean, they don't even have any new media...

why? to conform with what the rest of the general public considers 'constructive use of time'? it's not really much different to a swimmer beating the 100 metre breast stroke record or what ever. and what if the person in question is around the age of 10-15*, aside from schoolwork there isn't alot else important todo when you're that age so why not attempt todo something memorable like break a world record in video games.

*that's just a generaliseation used for argument purposes, not a solid fact i'm making up.

so I say, BRING ON MORE WORLD RECORDS ^_____^, my hat goes off to anyone who is that skilled.

Heh, I was just making a generalised and stereotypical comment.  I'm more than sure that these people have enough to do with their lives, and that this is most likely no more than a hobby for them.

I actually despise anyting bigger than 400x100, and I'm a fan of using 400x60...although most want bigger ones.  The worst possible size, though, is something that has a 2:1 size ratio...very ugly.

No signature images is a wee bit of a bummer for me considering that I use Photoshop to make just those at other boards, but it's no big loss.  The post content is more important, after all, and things tend to look cleaner without them.

Ah, okay...so that means that I'll be buying it for around 60-70 dollars.  Well, at least it's a bit less than normal.

Lousy exchange rates.  >_<

I don't see why you expect to pay so little.  It's practically a completely new game, and they're going to sell it for just as much as any other new game they release.

As for advertising, I think we're going to start seeing stuff on the week of it's release.  With commercials, it's a bit awkward to say "coming soon!", unless it's a movie.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: TS3? Nah, 'Second Sight' from Free Radical
« on: February 24, 2004, 12:52:49 PM »
Looks interesting...the game looks very similar to Timesplitters in it's graphical style, which I've always liked.  It seems to be a bit more realistic, though.  The story and theme of the game are also pretty interesting.  It's strange to ask, though, but is this a first-person game?  There's no first-person stuff there to speak of (although they may not have finished the basic engine yet), and it just says "shooter", nothing about it being in first-person.  I know that it's probably going to be first-person, but still, it would be interesting to see a third-person game.

General Chat / RE: Anti-Aliasing?

Yeah, that's true, heh.

By the way, does the PS2 have anti-aliasing?  I don't remember seeing it in any games.

General Chat / RE: Anti-Aliasing?
« on: February 23, 2004, 09:46:21 AM »
Eh, anti-aliasing isn't a thing that is game-specific.  Video cards today come equipped with the means to do it themselves, albeit with a performance hit.

That said, no, I don't use anti-aliasing, and it's not necessarily needed.  However, some people tend to swear by it because they hate jaggies.  I can stand them in most cases, and I'd rather take performance over image quality (though I generally keep graphics settings at highest because my computer can handle just about anything out right now, as well as in the future).  When you're getting low framerates (sub-40 fps for newer games, sub-60 fps for older ones), then image quality is probably the thing that won't be on your mind.

When it comes down to realism, then of course it's important.  Your goal is to make the player think that the player is doing what they are doing in real life, not actually playing a game that attempts to mimic real life.

The Cartoon Network does show some animes that are more adult-oriented, albeit with some censoring, changes in the translation, and on their "Adult Swim" segment, which airs later on at night (Cowboy Bebop is on at around 11 PM if I remember correctly).  Just because the Cartoon Network shows it does not mean it's a childrens' show.

Reader Reviews / RE: The Simpsons: Hit & Run
« on: February 22, 2004, 01:36:58 PM »
Oh, don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of The Simpsons, but this seemed a lot like their newer episodes to me...entertaining, but nothing compared to the old stuff (or whatever else is on).  There were many things that tried to be funny, but they didn't come off as funny at all to me.  That was really the main problem with it, I think.  It tried just a bit too hard.

Wow, that got off topic quickly, didn't it?  Anyway, I know of the member you're talking about, but why ban this guy?  Shouldn't you at least check the IPs?

As you can see by the convenient quote, I'm just wondering how in God's holy name you can classify Cowboy Bebop as a "kid's anime".  There are sexual themes, blood, frequent swearing, an advanced and tragic plot, as well as many more adult themes, and yet you classify it as a childrens' show?  Sorry, but where I come from, one plus one does not equal three.

As for your question about anime and manga, manga, as KnowsNothing pointed out, are the comic/still forms of Japanese animation, whereas anime is the animated form.  If you draw Japanese cartoons, 99% of the time, it will be manga.

Your avatar?  It was most likely too big.  Maximum avatar size here is 64x64 pixels, and yours is 119x86 pixels.

Being in the UK isn't really an excuse.  You can get anime illegally, after all (come on, you all know you do it), unless of course you're the type with those...those...what're they called...thingamajigers...ah, yes, that's right.  Morals.

Anime and American Anime are two different things.  American Animes are nearly always created to leech off of other franchises, with little to no original ideas in them.  In almost all cases, they are made for the sole purpose of making money off of small children - and this is the reason why they are generally so horrible.  Japanese anime, on the other hand, appeals to children as well as adults, and the more mature ones are treated even more seriously than the serious dramas we we see here.  I'm not saying that American Anime is always horrible, but it is almost always horrible.

I know that Cowboy Bebop has very good voice acting (especially for an anime), but even though it is good, much of the original meaning of the words is lost.  Not only do the characters sound different, resulting in different personailities (such as in Faye's case), but many small things are ignored.  With the Japanese (and generally with subtitles), you end up getting the full meaning, with nothing cut out due to making the voices match the characters, etc..  This kind of thing happens in every single anime there is, unless it's written in English in the first place.

Oh, and Trigun has horrible English voice acting...
