Actually DQVIII sold over a million copies if you combined the two markets (NA and Europe) as well.

That's because it had a demo of Final Fantasy XII with it in North America.  If you take away the FFXII demo, it's sales in North America wouldn't have been anywhere close to what they were.

Quote
So you're theory is a bit broken because DQIX sold the least in NA, Europe sales are nearly double that of the NA market.  DQIX sales are still pretty damn poor outside of Japan.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2011/110128e.pdf

Dragon Quest IX - 1.02 million copies between North America and Europe.

How is that poor?  Not to mention you do realize NOA is publishing Dragon Quest VI which comes out this week.  If Dragon Quest IX did poorly in North America then NOA would not be publishing the next Dragon Quest game.  And yet they are which means Dragon Quest IX did good in North America which is why Square Enix and Iwata are allowing NOA to publish DQVI as well.

Which goes back to my whole point about how if NOA was able to make a series like Dragon Quest that wasn't popular in North America unless it has a Final Fantasy demo inside the box, and make it do good by itself which is why they're now publishing the next game in North America as well, is a reason why Xenoblade and The Last Story still have a good chance of coming over here.  Since DQIX turned out well for them, there's on reason to believe that they feel Xenoblade and The Last Story won't turn out good as well.

DQ IX was one of the 10 best selling DS games of 2010, so that is more proof of how well it did.

And yeah, how is 1.02 million between North America and Europe poor? Most games don't sell that much in all regions combined.

According to vgchartz.com, DQ IX is ranked in sales...

#13 worldwide
#6 in Japan
#59 in "EMEAA", which I assume means "Europe, Middle-East, Africa, Asia?" (too lazy to research)
#170 in "the Americas"

As a huge fan of DQ IX, it was kind of sickening seeing what other DS games outsold this (America sales only)....

I'm not sure if Dragon Quest IX and The Last Story or Xenoblade is an apt comparison. Even forgetting that one game is of a popular, long-running series and the other two are new IPs, they're on different systems which likely means different audiences. RPGs seem to sell fairly well on DS but are there any RPGs on the Wii which sold decently? Dragon Quest IX sold millions in Japan alone, XenoBlade is at a few hundred thousand I believe and it doesn't look like The Last Story will do much better, so Dragon Quest IX isn't really much of an indicator as to how well those two games would fare in North America.

XenoBlade has now been out in Japan for 8 months and there has still been no confirmation that it's coming to North America. What other Nintendo-published titles were out in Japan for over 8 months without an announcement for North America which still ended up releasing in North America? I'm legitimately asking, I don't know if there are any or not.

Not quite 8 months, but PokePark Wii was out in Japan for 6 months before Nintendo announced it would come out in North America.

After doing some checking, I did find one that was 8 months. The Legendary Starfy for DS was released in Japan in July 2008, it first appeared on a list of upcoming games for North America in February 2009 (the game would then come out in June. Not really a "game", but 100 Classic Book Collection was out in Japan for 14 months before being announced for North America (released in Japan December 2008, announced for NA in February 2010). Glory of Heracles was also out for 14 months before being announced for North America (May 2008 released in Japan, confirmed for NA in July 2009).

So it's rare for Nintendo games to be out for a long time before being announced for North America, but it has happened before.

XenoBlade has now been out in Japan for 8 months and there has still been no confirmation that it's coming to North America.

Actually there is.  Xenoblade is Monando: Beggining of the New World here in North America and was first revealed at E3 2009.  The game has been on NOA release list since then as a TBA, but it's still on the list.  Even the most current list shows it still scheduled for a TBA release in North America.

http://www.nintendo.co.jp/ir/pdf/2011/110128e.pdf

And before anyone mentions Disaster, NOA removed that game from the release list after it's release in Japan/Europe and Reggie said the game was sh!t and it wouldn't come to North America unless it did well in Europe.  Considering Xenoblade/Monado is still on NOA release list and Reggie hasn't bashed it yet, I'm very optimisic about it's chances.

Nintendo may apply their 'mum is the word' strategy of revealing nothing about a game through the localization process as well. Monando/Xenoblade and Last Story both have large amounts of voice work, right?

I would say hold out till E3. That is probably when we will see the rest of 2011's lineup and I'm betting that aside from Zelda we'll be seeing a lot of Japan only games finally coming to the West.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say now that Last Story is probably done in Japan for all intents and purposes.  While nearly 150,000 units in 3 weeks isn't bad, I wonder if it justifies the seemingly-large development costs.  Hopefully, it sold well enough to justify a Western release.

With sales like this the PSP just might beat the DS in YTD sales this year for the first time ever. Not that it matters much really, but it would be a blemish on the DS' otherwise pristine performance in Japan.

Well, almost 150k units sold is over $7 million made on the game. Now, as you said, how much development costs were... that's the real question.

I think the game has already turned a profit, though. It's safe to say that it'll land on western shores later this fall or early next year. Game looks phenomenal.

I don't see that happening. In fact, I would not be surprised to see 3DS overtake PSP just on launch day alone. Would anyone be shocked to see 3DS sell more than 272K at launch?

I know all that. I'm just saying it would suck (from a Nintendo fanboy point of view) if the DS ends its career with its ass kicked by the PSP, which is what seems to be happening right now. Yeah, the 3DS is going to clean the floor with the PSP from the moment it kicks in the door, but I'm not talking about that. I just want the DS to retire with dignity and still be kicking the PSP's ass even as it is handing the torch on to the 3DS. It isn't happening like that though. Even though the DS kicked the PSP's ass consistently for years, its like the PSP is going to get the last symbolic laugh and the Sony fanboy trolls are going to seize on this.

The month's new releases couldn't quite top two of last year's bestsellers. Still, it looks like a fair start for Dead Space 2 and Little Big Planet 2. I recently finished Assassin's Creed 2 (PC) so it's nice to see Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood still in the charts. I hope that Ubi Soft doesn't rush things now they are flush with cash.

It's great to see Dead Space 2 sell so well, as it really is a phenomenal game.  It's a pity that Mass Effect 2 PS3 didn't make the list when we have stuff like Black Ops still up there, but oh well.

I think I recall seeing that Just Dance 2 was the top selling game when you don't combine the SKU's of games together.

I wonder how sales of DC Universe Online will keep up. It benefited from a huge marketing campaign.
