That's exactly why (mainline) Mario & Zelda games usually sell like they do. They don't come around very often and thats exactly what makes them special, since you know Nintendo put years of development into each one and this is probably all your gonna get for a few years.

I don't really think Sony is doing that bad.  After this Christmas they will be over where the Gamecube was for it's lifetime.  The PS3 slim is mostly for Japan as it's always been said they prefer smaller things due to thier small living compartments.  It also gives them a chance to change the image of their machine.  The DS was struggling against the PSP until the DS Lite came out and became the sexy machine that the DS wasn't.  Unless it's a clearance sale (like the original 20 gig and 60 gig were) there are already images popping up online that the PS3 will start at $299 starting next month.  That's a significant drop and should build interest into the holidays.  Sure they'll never catch the Wii in userbase, but that still shows a very good brand image for the price point they've been at this generation.

Now the GO, I'm not really sure what they are trying to do with that.  Well, I guess they are trying to compete with the IPOD touch, but minus the touch.  Which I don't think will make anyone change from Apple to Sony.  They really missed an opportunity in my opinion because a rebranded PSP Go at $169 would have compared favorably (in my opinion) to the DSi at $169.  At $249, it's not on most people's radar.

No, Sony's doing bad because they are still bleeding out money, and in third place with a console that still costs too much.

Just the fact that the PS3 is keeping PACE with the GC should set those editorial writers a-typing as that is pathetic for the one-time ruler of video games.  The fact that the Wii Balance Board has as much userbase as the PS3 is embarrassing, and not something they can rectify with a Wiimote knockoff and Hannah Montana PSPs.

DS struggling against the PSP? Maybe for the first 8 months. One Nintendogs came out, the DS took off and never looked back. The PSP was never a serious threat after that. How do you think Sony is not doing bad? They have yet to make a profit on the PS3, and Sony as a whole has had two straight quarters of losing more than $1 billion (when they hadn't lost money since 1995).

Considering that the GameCube really only did well in North America, I don't think matching equally against it is a big accomplishment. The PS3 is in a distant third place and I don't think a slimmer system will help that much. A $300 price tag would help, but I still think they will remain in third.

The DS was struggling initially but yeah, I'd rather look at software than hardware updates when it comes to reasons for the DS dominance and Nintendogs is the kind of killer app that boosted the DS.

Sony may have a good chance to beat Microsoft by a small amount but that's really just a pyrrhic victory.

The key difference between the Nintendo of the Gamecube era and the Sony of the PS3 era is that Nintendo actually made money with their system. Sony does not. That is why Nintendo was in an 'OK' position with GC and Sony is not doing even remotely well with the PS3.

The ps3 has been selling better than the 360 when matched up.  Really?  Why do people act like the giant money sink that is the 360 is doing so much better than the ps3.  The whole point of launching early isn't just to get the extra units out the door, it is supposed to give you momentum and advantage.  They seem to be doing equally shitty.  Low selling, money losing (especially when you add in the red ring stuff).

We all know Nintendo did great this generation, but Sony has done okay in my mind this generation.

Nintendogs may have been the downfall of the PSP.  But the PSP is most successful console launch of this era.  50 million in sales is nothing to laugh at and the PSP did outsell the DS in it's launch year.  I'd also wager it is making Sony money but it's impossible to tell because of the losses of the PS3 run thru the same division.

The PS3 is what it is.  They priced it out of the market and they added features (blu-ray) that were costly and not important to the consumer.  They had two options.  Cut the PS3 entirely, which would have saved them the most money, or run the gauntlet of the generation and make thier next console better (hopefully they will).  With what they launched with, it will be a victory to come in 2nd in this generation.  Nintendo hit a home run with motion control and I'm not convinced a $250 PS3 from the get go would have been able to hold off the Wii.

Sony did lose a lot of money with the PS3 and they aren't going to get it back.  But the rumored slim is rumored to cost around $250 to manufacture so a price point of $300 will hold the losses and allow them to build going into the next generation.  Yeah their launch was a disaster, but a $300 PS3 would go along way towards healing with the public.  Sony made $369 billion yen last year.  Did Nintendo make more, I think they did, I'm sure someone here can let me know.  But the PS1+PS2 only ever made them a couple of billion.  If you are looking at $ Nintendo's model will always make more $.  Sony focuses on selling you the PS3 so you get the Bravia TV, and the Sony soundsystem, and the Sony Blu Ray player, etc. etc.  They want to make money clearly which they didn't but they view the PS3 as a gateway where if a console fails for Nintendo they have to scramble to stay afloat.

Since we're making predictions for the next generation here's mine:

The next HD consoles will be aimed at 3D gaming using polarized glasses like the current 3D in the cinema.  Supposedly James Cameron's Avatar can already do this if you're running in 1080p using HDMI.  This will also be the selling point that finally gives Blu-Ray and advantage over standard DVD.

The next handhelds will also go 3D.  I've postulated that by putting two LED lights on the end of the stylus and detecting them with the built in camera on the DSi they could allow the player to "grip" and manipulate objects that appear to extend out of the screen at them.  Using a very finely lenticulated film they will be able to aim alternate columns of pixels to the left or right, providing a 3D view without the need for glasses.. as long as you look at the screen from straight on.  (So technically the DSi could do 3D with only small modifications right now!)

Sorry to keep derailing the thread.  I'm sure SalesBot will get us back on course quickly.

Those are worldwide sales, and the 360 doesn't sell in Japan. If you take out Japan, then you can drop the PS3 sales drastically, but the 360 only by a little bit.

Um, you do know that Microsoft has been making money on the Xbox 360 for at least the last 8 months? The PS3 has only barely been selling better than the Xbox 360 was at this point in its lifetime, and that is only because of Japan. The Xbox 360 has barely made a dent in Japan but it is easily beating the PS3 everywhere else.

Sony made $369 billion yen last year.  Did Nintendo make more, I think they did, I'm sure someone here can let me know.

Does making $369Billion Yen equal losing over $570million US?

Because Sony actually lost money last year, so by default, Nintendo made ALOT more than them. 2010 isn't looking so hot for Sony either, atleast not going by Q1 financials

Nintendo
Net Income: 42.3 Billion Yen or 443.16 Million US

Sony
Gaming Division
Net Income: -39.7 Billion Yen or -416.67 Million US
Sony Corp.
Net Income: -12.6 Billion Yen or -132.25 Million US

Quote
But the PS1+PS2 only ever made them a couple of billion.  If you are looking at $ Nintendo's model will always make more $.  Sony focuses on selling you the PS3 so you get the Bravia TV, and the Sony soundsystem, and the Sony Blu Ray player, etc. etc.  They want to make money clearly which they didn't but they view the PS3 as a gateway where if a console fails for Nintendo they have to scramble to stay afloat.

You can see from this chart, that Sony has virtually erased all their profits from 1999 till present with the losses from the PS3 including a loss of $577million US last year.

Sony's Gateway clearly isn't working especially since their TV sales are also down thanks to stiff competition from off-brands (Vizio, Westinghouse, Olevia) and cheaper quality from the likes of Panasonic & Samsung.

Aahahahahhah 1999-2009, Sony's 10-yr plan isn't looking so hot, Nintendo's 10-yr plan is followed by groans from the rest of the industry.

Nintendo has been acquiring more and more new customers at a rate faster than the old ones whine and commit suicide.

Nintendo's in so much trouble and setup for doom, eh non-casuals.

Nintendo has been acquiring more and more new customers at a rate faster than the old ones whine and commit suicide.

That's actually pretty funny.  My bad, I grabbed $369 billion yen from 2008 fiscal year.  They are on the messed up terms so yes, they did just have a loss for 2009 fiscal year.

The big question is though, does that $20 billion get you better games or just the ability to gloat?  Either way some Japanese guy in a private jet thanks you.

But Fiscal 2007 & 2008 Sony LOST ~$2Billion and ~$1Billion respectively

& $20Billion gets you whatever you want.

It's gotten me more better games than I could adbsorb last gen.  But gaming died when the PS2 came out, so it's all relative.
