Source is Shacknews

Sales-tracking groups NPD, GfK Chart-Track Limited and Enterbrain today issued the latest Top Global Markets report, revealing the best-selling console games in the world's three largest markets--United States, United Kingdom and Japan--across 2008.

   1. Mario Kart Wii (Wii / Nintendo) - 8.94M
      (5M US, 1.94M UK, 2M Japan)
   2. Wii Fit (Wii / Nintendo) - 8.31M
      (4.55M US, 1.61M UK, 2.15M Japan)
   3. Grand Theft Auto IV (PS3, 360 / Rockstar North) - 7.29M
      (5.18M US, 1.85M UK, 256K Japan)
   4. Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii / Nintendo) - 6.31M
      (4.17M US, 404K UK, 1.75M Japan)
   5. Call of Duty: World at War
      (PS2, PS3, 360, Wii, DS / Treyarch, Rebellion, n-Space) - 5.89M
      (4.46M US, 1.43M UK, 0 Japan)

Combined, the US, UK and Japanese console software market grew 11% in 2008, selling 409.9 million units over 2007's 367.7 million. The United States was responsible for more than 268.4 million--65%--of the 409.9 million units sold during 2008.

Total UK and Japanese sales figures were not provided.

Overall, the US market grew 15%, the UK's grew 26%, and Japan saw a 13% decline due to shrinking PS2 sales and lower portable sales.

To further break down the growth of software, US sales grew 22% in home consoles and 2% in portables, while the UK saw a 30% boost in home console software and a 6% portable jump.

The list is BS because they didn't include Wii Play simply because it was released in 2007.

It's not Nintendo's fault the best selling game of last year was release the year before!

DS version is outselling the Wii version almost 5 to 1.  Can't say I'm exactly surprised.

Console games are dead in Japan.  If consoles are going to have any hope, they have to shrink just like what phones and televisions did.

The next round of consoles will have to be as small as a portable, PORTABLE, and have TV-hookup capability.

Wow, that would really suck.  If they hooked up to a TV then I'd just play them like that.  But portables SUCK for multiplayer since everyone has to own one.  A lot of devs just don't bother to implement it at all.  You're also limited on the controller options.  No one has put analog sticks on a portable yet.  Analog nubs sure but not something, you know, good.  Plus if they design the games for a portable they have to have big text and sacrifice graphic detail that won't show up on a tiny screen (and that lack of detail will likely look like pixelated crap on a TV).  The whole thing would just be a huge compromise to gaming as we know it.

Seems inevitable in some way though.  These days someone like me who watches video on TVs, listens to music on big speakers and uses a desktop PC is like mister oddball while everyone is hooked into their Blackberry or iPhone.

Though there is one issue with it.  Old people can't see or hear worth a ****.  Considering that's now part of Nintendo's market moving to only portables might turn off that market.

Well, if it hooked up to a tv then I don't see why it couldn't have a bluetooth thing built into it and then you could use controllers with it so that others could play. That way each player would only need to own a controller rather than the console/porrtable.

But then in an instant the console could be unplugged from the tv and it would revert back to portable mode. This is what I see happening in the future.

I would love a hybrid Portable Console Device.  But truthfully it would be too limited.  And the controller issue is exactly why it would be limited.

Sorry Ian hate to break it to you but you are wrong.

And I hate to break it to YOU, but a revolving joystick isn't the same thing as an analog stick. Joysticks are digital and don't respond to how much you push on them. Remember in Super Mario 64 how moving it a hair would make Mario tip-toe, but moving it a lot would make him run? Well, a revolving joystick isn't like that. For them its either all or nothing.
is your sanity...

His point is that if the NeoPocket can have that joystick a portable can easily have an analog stick on it.  Actually, Imagine that Joystick on a Nintendo DS and include analog controls would be awesome.

So Nintendo fails at saving the Japanese home console market? T_T

The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

There's a clear difference between handheld sales and console sales. I wouldn't say its dead NOW, but its definitely on the endangered species list.

Oh bah, at this point Nintendo heads the industry (console and portable), and dictates the trends. If people are still buying up Wiis like no tomorrow, then clearly people aren't tired of that kind of system. However, the brief age of the Xbox-size behemoth is over, and if Microsoft puts out another console it better be smaller. And quieter.

"WII] Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (Square Enix) - 7,200 / 30,000"

Damn, two weeks worth of sales and it didn't break 100K?  Something not right here since just about anything with FF sells 100K+ just by being a brand name.  The only review I found gave it an 8/10 so the can't couldn't have suck that bad?  If RPG's don't sell on the WII in Japan they might not even get ported to the states.  I wonder if you can download the game from WII store--if it was downloadable the charts might not be 100% correct.
