For me, the big stories of this NPD are the 2nd & 10th slot. Bloodborne pretty much exceeded everyone's expectations, considering how previous Souls games have sold. As for Type 0 HD, considering how well we know Mario Party 10 sold, Square-Enix has to be looking at that game as a bomb now, despite the FF 15 demo. And, frankly, having beaten that game, I can't feel too sad that it bombed.

As for the #1 slot, Battlefield is Battlefield. I liked the SP game in Hardline, but that MP does draw audiences.

I think Bloodborne's sales are a result of shameless pandering journalism to make it appear as of the game is more accessible to a wider audience (it is though, so they got that right) and PS4 owners desperate for a release.

Meanwhile, Code Name Steam bombed because journalists thought it was too hard. I suppose action RPGs are more casual than TPSRPGs.

It's a shame we don't get things like average selling price in NPD analysis anymore, I'd really like to know if MP10 was closer to $50 or $60 (meaning Amiibo is affecting game sales).

Well according to the NPD leaker on Neo Gaf, the Amiibo bundle made up 47% of all retail sales.

See in theory Bloodborne's success makes sense to me.  We're in an era where videogames have been accused of being easier and easier so I would expect a certain pushback on that trend.  Things tend to work in extremes so if you feel games are getting too easy you're going to be attracted to a really difficult game.  But then Code Name: Steam doesn't have the same success.  I think it might just be that there are different expectations for handhelds or possibly Nintendo themselves; Nintendo games are not usually very hard.

Though look at Intelligent Systems last big hit: Fire Emblem Awakening.  It's the accessible Fire Emblem.  The game that made permadeath optional and gained a big audience with those that liked strategy RPGs but were turned off by that requirement.  So IS follows up a more accessible title with a really difficult one?  That's not what the new Fire Emblem fans would be looking for.

I don't think it helped Codename STEAM's case that it wasn't very good, either. It's certainly nowhere near Awakening's tier. I wonder how the sales would have fared if Nintendo hadn't released the game broken, without the fast forward option for enemy turns. That one flaw might have single-handedly killed that game, because it shows up in EVERY review.

I think the fast forward was left out partly for technical reasons. I read the  New 3DS can fast forward at 3X, but the original 3DS can only fast forward at 2X.

Yes, but if they could do it now, it could have been part of the game's original development. Given just how poorly the game sold (according to GAF), I'd say it definitely could've made a difference in sales.

I wasn't aware you played the game. I'd love to hear your thoughts sometime.

If people can take the enemy turns in XCOM, I feel try should be able to bear enemy turns in STEAM. Also Ian, I'm not sure what you're trying to imply- that video game enthusiasts want challenge or that they can't handle it. Bloodborne isn't the shining example of difficulty known from the series, and I'm pretty sure the majority of people that were new to Fire Emblem did not play the game on its normal settings.

It's OK. There's too much utter B.S. in the design (the sniping birds with the instant-stun rounds come to mind) for me to really get into it, though.

I'm saying that as games have gotten easier overall, there is a target market that specifically wants the exact opposite, at the very least to get an alternative to the norm.  If you feel games have gotten too easy here is a game to give a try.  I think that's why the Souls series overall has increased in popularity.  In an era where games will be designed for you to pay to succeed in it, here is a game that requires legitimate skill.  It's like how pop rules the airwaves but metal has a big fanbase because it appeals to those that want something more extreme than the mainstream.

Yup! Two weeks. First time when I didn't bring a laptop with me; only my smartphone and tablet.

While I could have fumbled on an iPad mini (1) to do the 'ole copy and paste, I elected not to. It was kind of nice not having IRC and a web browser with a physical keyboard. I should try not looking at Twitter on my next vacation.
