They should be working to make their games last longer than one year instead of adding extra developers.

They would if they didn't make a new one every year. People would play BLOPS 2 for at least 2 years if Ghosts didn't come out in November (right?), but money.

Dragon Quest Monsters 2 takes the top spot while the new Donkey Kong Country for Wii U takes the 2nd spot with 35k.

Quote
Last week, Nintendo released Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in Japan, and the game sold an absurdly low number of copies in its first week on store shelves. Tropical Freeze sold just 35,717 copies and barely lifted Wii U hardware sales, which were at 8,782 units.

Here’s an idea of how badly Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze did: Donkey Kong Country Returns, which was released in 2010 for the Wii, sold 163,310 copies in its first week. A port of that game, released for the Nintendo 3DS in 2013, sold 104,569 copies in its first week. Tropical Freeze is nowhere near those numbers.

Next week's results will be exciting as the PlayStation 4 will be launched in Japan on the 22nd of February.

Very confused about Wii U owners. They honestly don't buy software. Did most Wii U owners get sick of Nintendo's incompetence, lies ("there will be no droughts on our next hardware" - said the past three platform releases), and droughts, and thus sold their systems?

There's an obvious cap on sales potential due to a lack of hardware sales.  The console has only sold 1.6 million units.  To match the Wii game's first week sales 10% of Wii U owners would have to have bought Tropical Freeze in the first week.

But if existing Wii U owners are not buying the games it might be that they've moved on.  Like they didn't necessarily sell their old system but just figured the Wii U is finished so they need to look towards some other platform for their videogame needs.  In doing so they don't pay as much attention to the Wii U's release schedule.

The thing is Mario 3D World is only 3 month old and got most of it's 500k sales during December.  So there's around 500k Japanese Wii U owners who bought a platformer only 2 months earlier, but seems most have no interest in another platformer.  Even with the Wii U's poor hardware sales, Donkey Kong still had the potential to do much better then it did.  Hell, Pikmin 3 sold around 100k its first week and boasted hardware up to 22k from 9k the previous week.  Plus when Pikmin was released there literally hadn't been anything released for 8 months, so the 3 month gap couldn't explain sales this bad.

The problem in this situation seems to be more the game itself then the system.  I wouldn't be surprised if the difficulty of the first game is the real reason for this.  It's been well documented the mass Japanese gaming audience prefers easier games and well, Returns was an extremely difficult game.  The audience that's used to Mario and Kirby in Japan, if they were to play Returns are going to be in for a huge difficulty spike.  Yeah there was a Super Guide in the first game, but if players are constantly being forced to use it in the second half of the game, eventually they're going to just give up.

So now when the sequel comes out, they ignore it because they stopped halfway through the first game.  This is the only realistic solution since Returns sold better then Pikmin 2, and yet the sequel to Pikmin sold better then the sequel to Donkey Kong.  Despite the fact the last Pikmin game came out 9 years earlier while there's only a 3 year gap between Donkey Kongs.

The PlayStation 4 has arrived in Japan, selling >300k in the few days of Media Create's data. Knack and the latest Yakuza game top the charts. In a long time coming, the Wii U has surpassed the lifetime-to-date sales of the Xbox 360 in Japan.

Official numbers say over 322k for PS4, which would explain why more people bought Knack than consoles (according to this list), but that's a pretty amazing attach rate, even if the game is **** (it is ****).

There are a lot of Western PS4 games in that list that I can't imagine Japanese gamers would give the slightest **** about.  Japan loves the handhelds and Japanese games have followed them there.  But the console sales are alright so what are they buying it for?

The PS4 system number is almost exactly the same as the Wii U in its first week. We'll see if it'll have the same sort of drop-off or if it can sustain it.

"Those are horrible software sales in general for the system."

Knack was free plus a lot of people took advantage of "free download" upgrades for games like FFXIV.  it's not really surprising to see low software sales.

The Japanese launch window is a bit sparse but in the fall there's supposed to be more Japanese type games like the Order, KHIII, ect and that's where the PS4 should boom.

There's not  a big push for "home" console development in Japan since the 90's--it's all about the handhelds in the land of the rising sun--which is the total opposite of the US and European markets.

I haven't looked at the Japanese launch lineup, but based on the American one there probably wasn't much there that would appeal to Japan.I own five retail games for the system and the only one that would remotely seem to appeal to Japan is FIFA.

I'm surprised to see Battlefield 4 sales so high.

I don't know what I'm more intrigued by1: The fact that a 3rd person shooter is now a Japanese type game, or that Kingdom Hearts 3 is coming out THIS DECADE, let alone this year.

Kingdom Hearts 3... I'm sure my son will be in college before that game is ever released.

I meant was FFXV and KH3.  :( Was doing two things at once.

Both these titles have had an *long* development cycle and I think Square Enix is bleeding money so I'm expecting to see an release date sooner than later.  In fact, there's supposed to be an announcement any day now.

The latest Harvest Moon and Fossil Fighters for the 3DS take the top and third spot, respectively. The top ten see Dragon Quest Monsters, Yo-kai Watch, and Kirby sticking around. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze is hanging in there though this may be its last week.

So here's the question.  How long will it take the PS4 to drop under the 3DS in Per Week?
