It sucks it didn't beat the PS2's record, but it is still #1 this generation. Is the gaming market shrinking in Japan? Maybe its just moving more over to the handheld systems. Maybe the DS's unprecedented success explains the Wii's lower performance.

It think it's absolutely amazing how Nintendo's Wii entries in their beloved franchises outsold the GCN's entire lifespan.

4.04 million according to Nintendo itself. Wii beat it in less than 1 year.

Yes, but it isn't really a fair comparison when you consider that the Wii has a larger userbase. If you go by percentage of userbase, SSBMelee is higher.

That's because Melee kept selling for years, Brawl was front-loaded. Melee sold about 6 million, Brawl is at about 8 million (worldwide, I couldn't find Japanese specific for these 2). Melee would continue appearing in the Top 10 GameCube games in North America even 4 years after its release.

That's probably because Melee was released close to launch, and such titles tend to have longer shelf lives than titles released later on.

True, but still Melee had quite a selling punch to it, even beating out the first Halo (although that did have a squeal that generation).

How come the Japanese turned their backs on Nintendo during the GC era when they had been supportive of them in the past? I thought the Japanese were bound by the code of Bushido and would never betray the company they supported?

But in any case, its good to see they are finally coming back to their senses and throwing their support behind the Mushroom kingdom once more.

Pretty sure the mass exodus in Japan happened during the N64 era, actually. The Sega Saturn was far more relevant there than other markets too.

The Nintendo 64 didn't sell well in Japan because of lack of RPGs. Super Mario 64 sold a good amount of systems, but after that there wasn't much that could compete with the PlayStation and its never-ending stream of RPGs. This continued with GameCube.

Mario 64 sold tons of N64 in Japan, problem was that after everyone beat Mario64, there was nothing else to play for months, so they sold all the systems back to the shops.

Look at the percentage though, the publishers didn't ship that many (meaning it probably wasn't easy to find a copy). The Dragon Ball Z game only had about 10,000 copies shipped (they sold 4,900 copies and that was 50% of the total shipped). It looks like most of them had about 10K shipped, with One Piece and Muramasa having about 12K shipped each.
