I wouldn't consider the GBC to be the same system, because GBC games weren't reverse compatible with the original GB. In my opinion, as soon as you've broken compatibility what you have is a new system.

Technically, there's a DSi-exclusive game (with more on the way).  Does it count as a new system?

You can't play DSiWare games on a regular DS.

I think you either have to count both as the same system or both as completely separate systems. You can't say GB is different from GBC and DS is the same system as DSi or vise versa.

Good point. I guess having one or a small handful of exclusives isn't enough, but if this becomes a trend and we start seeing lots of broken compatibility DSi games, then sure....

Game Boy and Game Boy Color are NOT the same system. DSi/DS/DS Lite ARE the same systems. I honestly don't see how anyone can think otherwise.

Regardless of whether or not the Game Boy/Game Boy Color and the various DS editions are different systems or not, such system revisions still inflate sales due to repeat buyers. If the Wii manages to outsell them without the aid of a hardware revision, that will be quite a feat indeed, and would also mean that such a number would be closer to the actual userbase of the system.

Gameboy and Gameboy Color are the same system, also there were many games that were made for GBC that also worked on the regular Gameboy.

Let's get back on topic and away from people somehow thinking Game Boy and Game Boy Color are the same (I don't know about Gameboy and Gameboy Color though lol).

The Wii continues to be a beast. For those wondering, the current Wii attach ratio is about 7.67 games per system (the DS is around 6).

I think that's incorrect logic that focuses only on relative positions. Sure, you can't rank better than #1 but this isn't Formula 1, you don't get a fixed number of points for your ranking. The real score is the money and you can always gain more of that, you can always sell more systems, etc. Previous records can always be beaten, after all they were set by beating old ones in first place. Nintendo's performance can go up and down without them ever getting near #2. Microsoft would be happy to be #1 but Nintendo isn't striving for #1, they're striving for the highest score possible.

No, portables just always have lower attach rates than home consoles.

There is no "top" which Nintendo has reached or could possibly reach. They would have to sell a billion consoles, like one for every family on the planet, before they would have reached a saturation point where sales can't go much higher, and this hasn't happened yet and probably never will happen.

In Japan the NDS has sorta hit this point because its sold so well and Japan's population is only so much that its hard for them to find new people to sell to. But the Wii still has lots of sales potential there and everywhere else. Nintendo most certainly hasn't "reached the top" yet, so there's no way that it has "no where else to go but down".

Yeah, it really is this in the end.

I distinctly remember Iwata saying something like if the Wii was simply a console that outsold the GameCube, it'd be a failure. The Wii's final legacy, will be determined not by whether its console tally is more or less than X number, but by whether it changes the accessibility, perception, and relevance of gaming for people outside the gaming subculture echo chamber.

It's entertaining, when looking at the Wii's growth compared to its competitors, it makes the gaming subculture even smaller than it was.  (Whereas "Wii" is part of the main culture)

Cater was responding to what I said. And I don't think you understand what I was saying.
If Nintendo doesn't go down, then they will be breaking their own record, and I'm pretty sure Wii & DS have hit their peaks already. No one was expecting Nintendo to magically fall into second place, just start getting more negative news as their sales drop, profits drop and stock decreases from "having nowhere to go but down".

In other words, Nintendo is doing too well and there is no way they can maintain this record setting pace.
