TalkBack / E3 2009 Announced
« on: October 23, 2008, 12:57:42 AM »
Next year's Electronic Entertainment Expo will feature larger booths and a greatly increased attendance.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=17046

Select members of the games industry such as Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida and Sim City creator Will Wright have recently been outspoken about E3's diminishing importance. The hallways of E3 2008 were described by many as evoking feelings of a ghost town and major publisher Activision Blizzard decided not to attend. Today, the Entertainment Software Association announced that E3 2009 will be held at the Los Angeles Center and that it will feature a number of changes to help bring the show back to its former prominence.

While E3 2009 will not be open to the public as rumors predicted, it will have a much larger turn out than the previous two shows where attendees needed invitations. The ESA has said that the new and improved show "will welcome all qualified computer and video game industry audiences, including international and U.S.-based media, analysts, retailers, developers and business partners to preview the latest in interactive entertainment and technology."

There will be a larger number of companies who can exhibit their products at next year's show. It is also expected that booth sizes will be increased. John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts, stated that, "The E3 Expo will be the pre-eminent North American gaming show next year. The new, larger event is better for industry leaders and for serious gamers."

E3 2009 will be held from June 2nd to June 4th.

Entertainment Software Association Announces 2009 E3 Expo

Los Angeles to Host Video Game Industry Event in June

Washington, DC – October 22, 2008 – The 2009 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) will take place from June 2-4, 2009, at the Los Angeles Convention Center (LACC), the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) announced today. The expanded E3 will welcome all qualified computer and video game industry audiences, including international and U.S.-based media, analysts, retailers, developers and business partners to preview the latest in interactive entertainment and technology.

"Video games are the fastest growing and most compelling sector of the entertainment industry. And, this upgraded event will reflect the growth, innovation and excitement of our industry," said Michael D. Gallagher, CEO of the ESA, which represents US computer and video game publishers and organizes the annual event. "The breadth, scope and quality of the changes made to the show will make E3 the must-attend event of the year."

"The E3 Expo will be the pre-eminent North American gaming show next year. The new, larger event is better for industry leaders and for serious gamers," commented John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts.

After conducting both qualitative and quantitative research, ESA officials stated changes were necessary to better meet the needs of both exhibitors and attendees— these changes include increased booth sizes, increased qualified audiences, and an intensified focus on reinforcing the high-octane growth, innovation, and captivating entertainment that are driving the computer and video game industry.

"The video game business will be twice as big in 2009 as it was in 2006 when we had the last real E3 Expo - so get ready for some fireworks!" said Laurent Detoc, president of Ubisoft North America. "The changes made will ensure that the 2009 E3 Expo conveys the best of what makes us proud as entertainment leaders."

ESA also said IDG World Expo, whose principals have operated E3 since its inception in 1995, will produce the event with the ESA.

The event will be open to ESA members and non-members alike. Organizers noted they are expanding the list of companies eligible to participate. Companies involved in console, PC, online, and mobile game publishing and developing, qualified business partners, as well as makers of video game hardware and peripherals can exhibit.

Additional details, including registration, hotel and travel accommodations, and media credentialing, will be forthcoming in the next few weeks and will be available at www.e3expo.com.

TalkBack / New Info on Pro Evolution Soccer 2009
« on: October 16, 2008, 11:53:27 AM »
The soccer game will include a new co-op mode, enhanced control, and Mii support.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16997

Konami recently revealed new details about Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 at an event held in Rome. Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will feature improved control, smarter AI, and a co-op mode.

Returning from last years edition is the innovative control scheme that allows the player to issue commands to teammates using the IR functionality of the Wii Remote. The game has been tweaked to give the player a higher level of control. Computer-controlled players will behave more intelligently thanks to improved AI. Other additions include a new targeting system that lets players guide the soccer ball when a shot is taken and an updated defense system.

Players who would prefer to use a more old-fashioned (i.e. pre-Wii) control set-up can use the Classic Controller or the Wii Remote held horizontally. This year's iteration includes a Co-Operative Play mode which allows one player to use the Wii control system with IR while the other uses the traditional control scheme.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will include the UEFA Champions League, the Master League, and the Champions Road competition. There will be a Mii Training sub-game system and an improved Edit Mode. Players can also expect upgrades to the online mode.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 will be released in Europe and North America next spring.  A new trailer for the game is embedded below.

PES 2009: First Wii version details

New AI, more control and modes galore as PES 2009 warms up for Wii

Konami Digital Entertainment GmbH has revealed key gameplay additions to its forthcoming PES 2009 title for Wii. Scheduled for release in Spring 2009, the new game will retain the intuitive 'point and click' interface used to control both the player in possession of the ball and to send those around him on to runs into space. However, a new 'traditional' control system using either a Wii Remote or Classic controller has also been implemented.

Producer Akiyoshi 'Greyhound' Chosogabe detailed his plans for the new game at a special event in Rome:

A New Level of Control: Players will once again point and drag team mates into space to make runs, but Greyhound and his team has worked to improve the movement and level of control available to the player.

An improved defense system will allow players to close down their opposition with more precision using the Z button, while a new targeting system sees the player steering where they place the ball when shooting. Coupled with better AI for the CPU-controlled players and opposition, the result is a more free-flowing and faster paced simulation. Set pieces have also been reworked, with more precision on free kicks and a wider range of corners than in the previous game.

Co-Operative Play: Greyhound is keen to emphasise the teamwork ethos of the PES series, and has added a second control system for co-op play. One player will use the familiar Nunchuck and Wii Remote system to control their player and drag players into space, with the second adopting a more traditional PES controller to control individual players.

Using a Wii Remote held sideways or a classic controller, the secondary player can control the game in a manner familiar to existing versions of PES for other formats. Thus, they can control using familiar PES controls while their co-op player orchestrates their player and the rest of the team using the bespoke Wii system.

Additional Modes: In keeping with versions for other formats, PES 2009 for Wii will also feature the UEFA Champions League, the addition of the ever-popular Master League for the first time on this format plus the return of an enhanced Champions Road competition, an enhanced Edit Mode, more online gameplay possibilities, and a Mii Training sub-game system.

PES 2009 will be released for Wii in Spring 2009.

The basic mechanics of Tetris Party will be familiar to anyone who has played Tetris in the past. The goal is to rotate the falling Tetriminos (formations of four square blocks) so that once they land they will help form a horizontal row of blocks. Once a seamless line of blocks is formed, all blocks in that row will vanish.

Of course, Tetris in such a basic form has been done to death. As such Hudson has created a plethora of brand new experiences and has crammed them into 18 unique modes of play. Furthermore, ten of these modes will feature multiplayer counterparts.

The game will include two classic mainstays of the Tetris series, Marathon mode, where gamers try to score the largest number of points over the course of fifteen levels and Endless mode, where the game keeps going until players' reflexes fail and the entire screen is filled with blocks. Beginner's Marathon will also be included to easy new players into the game. The mode will start at a slower pace and the Tetriminos will be enlarged.

Field Climber is a new mode in which an on screen climber will be hauling themselves over the rows of blocks, trying to reach the top of the screen. Players will help the climber by dropping Tetriminos to climb on. As the climber reaches a certain height they will pass through checkpoints.

In Shadow mode gamers will need to align the Tetriminos so that they match a certain shape shown in the background. The shape will need to be built from a variety of Tetriminos, and there will be 30 different shapes to produce.

Stage Racer tasks players with guiding a single Tetrimino through a set of courses in the fastest time possible.

VS Battle is a variation on the traditional Tetris multiplayer mode. As gamers vanquish rows of blocks, their competitors may receive additional bothersome blocks falling on their screen. This mode will include ten items that utilize the Wii Remote. VS Hot Lines is a multiplayer mode in which gamers are challenged to get rid of all the glowing green lines first. Players who aren't able to challenge a friend will be able to take on the computer and still enjoy everything the Battle Modes have to offer.

Tetris Party will also feature two modes which include a wider playing field. In Co-op Tetris gamers will work together to clear rows of blocks and try to get the highest score. A new turn-based mode called Duel Spaces will have players competing on the same grid to corral off the most empty-space by arranging the Tetriminos in a box. Each piece of the grid enclosed by a box of Tetriminos will provide a certain number of points to the owning player. Much like on paper games of similar influence, the person to close the box is awarded ownership.

Players will also be able to choose from three special Wii Balance Board modes known as Marathon, Ultra, and Computer Battle where pieces are rotated using the Balance Board.        The Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection will allow up to six players to compete in a game of Tetris and the game also allows for up to four players to play the game locally. As with nearly all other Wii games, Tetris Party will require the use of a unique game-specific friend code.

Tetris Party will be released on WiiWare for 1200 Wii Points sometime this month.

TalkBack / Dunaway Discusses Nintendo's Upcoming Plans
« on: October 06, 2008, 07:02:59 PM »
Cammie Dunaway talks about the new Pikmin, Club Nintendo, WiiSpeak Channel, and more.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16900

IGN recently held an interview with Nintendo of America Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Cammie Dunaway in which she revealed some new details about Nintendo's future releases.

A limited edition bundle will package Animal Crossing: City Folk with the microphone peripheral, WiiSpeak, for $59.99. Purchasers of WiiSpeak will be able to download the WiiSpeak Channel for free. The channel will allow Wii owners to share picture slideshows with one another and discuss them. Ms. Dunaway commented that WiiSpeak's "sound quality is good and it's going to be great by the time we get around to launching it."

Dunaway claimed that gamers who have already registered their purchases on the My Nintendo website will be able to bring over some of the points they've accumulated to the North American Club Nintendo. She also said that the new Pikmin game that Shigeru Miyamoto talked about at E3 had nothing to do with the recently announced re-releases of Pikmin 1 & 2. Dunaway briefly discussed Retro Studios, developers of the Metroid Prime games, confirming that "they are working hard," but she wouldn’t let slip exactly what they are working on.

TalkBack / Valhalla Knights is Coming to Wii.
« on: October 06, 2008, 07:42:23 PM »
The RPG series is heading for Wii in a new installment that promises gigantic monsters and online cooperative play.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16883

A recent issue of Famitsu, the Japanese gaming magazine shows that the K2 developed RPG, Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga is coming to the Wii. Two installments of Valhalla Knights have already been released on the PSP. The game features character creation, a cooperative Wi-Fi mode, and a great deal of monster killings.

The story tells the tale of a world that has gone out of control after the return of magic. Players will join the armies of elves, dwarves, humans, and halflings on a quest to banish magic to a place known as Eldar.

The game will have a deep character creation mode in which players can select attributes such as their job, hair color, strength, and intelligence. Uniquely the game is divided into two chapters, which are both selectable at the start of the game. Strangely it is only possible to create a new character whose gender and race can be something other than male or human after completing one of the chapters. Data from the first chapter completed will be carried over to the second.

Like in the previous Vahalla Knights games, players will take on a wide variety of monsters that drop useful equipment and items. Elder Saga will have some of the largest and most fearsome monsters seen in the series. The game will also support the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection so that two gamers in separate households can play cooperatively. Part of the soundtrack is being composed by Motoi Sakuraba, who has written music for a number of games including the Star Ocean series, and Mario Golf.

Valhalla Knights: Eldar Saga will debut in Japan in 2009.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Chrono Trigger
« on: October 03, 2008, 10:08:16 PM »
One of the most revered role-playing games of all time is on its way to the DS with a set of brand new features.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=16853

In 1995, developer Square assembled a "Dream Team" of artists, featuring the creators of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, to make a new game. The game this collaboration brought to fruition was Chrono Trigger for the Super Nintendo.  Soon, a new generation of gamers will have a chance to play the time traveling RPG on the DS.

Chrono Trigger sends players on a journey both forwards and backwards through time as the silent protagonist, Crono. He is swept into the adventure when his friend Marle is mistakenly sent back in time while testing a teleportation machine. Ultimately, Crono and his band of friends will find themselves on a quest to save the world.

The game utilizes a version of the Active Time Battle system, which originated in Final Fantasy IV. Players also have special physical and magical attacks known as Tech skills. At certain times, party members can to combine the powers of their Tech skills to create a more powerful attack. In opposition to the randomly occurring battles found in Square Enix’s other RPGs, players can see and avoid enemies while traversing the world map. The game will also include the same multitude of possible endings found in the original rendition.

Chrono Trigger for the Nintendo DS will be extremely faithful to the Super Nintendo original. The hand drawn art style of Dragon Ball creator, Akira Toriyama, is kept intact. Composer Yasunori Mitsuda is supervising the DS port to make sure the music sounds as close as possible to the Super NES version.

New features planned for the DS version include the ability to use the touch screen to choose your attacks. The touch screen can display menu options, your characters' remaining health and magic power, and a map of the current area. Players can also expect a brand new dungeon designed specifically for the DS, in addition to the bonus dungeon that was introduced in the PlayStation port. There is also a wireless mode that accommodates two players in a new monster battling mode.

Chrono Trigger will be released on November 25 with a suggested retail price of $39.99.

TalkBack / PREVIEWS: Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop

Prepare to slice and dice the undead in Capcom's latest survival horror video game.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/previewArt.cfm?artid=16848

Capcom is bringing their popular Dead Rising series to the Wii in a new game titled, Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop. The original Dead Rising was released on the Xbox 360 in the summer of 2006. Players will take on the role of journalist Frank West, as he explores a zombie ravaged mall in the fictional town of Willamette, Colorado.

Running on the same engine used by Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition, the game will allow gamers to target and shoot enemies using the Wii Remote. If a zombie succeeds in grabbing the player, they can shake the Wii Remote to throw the zombie off. Capcom has littered the shopping mall with a plethora of items that can be used against the zombies such as benches, umbrellas, golf clubs, lawnmowers, and footballs.  Swinging and throwing items at enemies is also possible with Wii Remote gestures.

The origin of the zombie attack will be discovered by completing individual case files, which each give a piece of the story. While searching the mall, players will also run into other survivors who may need saving. The mall features a number of restaurants and shops where humorous costumes can be found and food can be devoured as extra health.

Compared to the Xbox 360 game, Capcom has promised the inclusion of new enemies and a more robust save system.

Dead Rising: Chop Till You Drop will be released this upcoming winter.

TalkBack / NEC SuperGrafx on Its Way to Virtual Console
« on: September 30, 2008, 04:34:57 AM »
Ghouls 'N Ghosts is coming to VC, again.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=16769

Nintendo, through an update of their Japanese Virtual Console release list, has unveiled that gamers will soon be able to play SuperGrafx games on the Nintendo Wii. The SuperGrafx, which was released exclusively in Japan back in 1989, is a minimally enhanced version of NEC’s PC Engine (TurboGrafx 16 for the rest of the world).

The system will debut with a port of Capcom’s popular platformer, Ghouls 'N Ghosts. This will not be the first time Ghouls 'N Ghosts has graced the Virtual Console; the Genesis port was released last summer in North America and Europe.  The SuperGrafx port is known to have superior animation than the Genesis version.

There will be very few future Virtual Console releases for the SuperGrafx, if any. In all, the system only had five dedicated games released, with an additional two PC Engine games, both versions of the shooter Darius, that had slight graphical upgrades when run on the SuperGrafx. Ghouls 'N Ghosts will retail for 800 Wii Points upon its Japanese release in October. There is no word yet if SuperGrafx games will be appearing in the rest of the world.
