Just finished listening to the retroactive part (I'll listen to new business tomorrow). I am curious if any of you considered looking up a Let's Play to get a better idea of how the game works and what kinds of strategies you could use.

27
I used Card Pop a few times back in the day. Unfortunately, you had to pop with a bunch of people before you could use the same person again, so even though I went to TCG league I never got that many.

28

Would you guys pay for a new version of this game if it was released on the eshop for a decent price?

Probably, though I hardly ever use the TCG online that exists now (I actually tried to give away some spare codes through the RFN telethon a few years ago).

29
Gambler illustrates another reason why evolution cards were so hard to play in the early TCG-lack of good shuffle draw.

Moving onto something more positive, I like the music in this game as well-all the battle themes are good, as are the ending and end credits themes.

30
Wigglytuff is another evolution worth running-doing 60 for 3 energy is extremely useful, and it's not hard to fill up your bench (Scyther and Mysterious Fossil are great candidates). There's a reason it was so popular back in the day.

31
The issue is that my selection of trainers is very limited.

This brings up another trait of the early TCG I didn't like-rare trainers. Base Set actually has ten of them, many competitively useful:

-Computer Search (reprinted and yet not reprinted in Boundaries Crossed in 2012)
-Item Finder
-Lass
-Pokemon Breeder
-Pokemon Trader
-Scoop Up
-Super Energy Removal

Thankfully, the number of rare staple trainers went down later into the card game's life.

32
What do folks think of the Challenge Cups? There are two that occur during the main game, then in the post-game they appear (randomly?) when starting the game. They give you a chance to pick up some of the promotional cards, which is pretty neat. Of course, you can save between matches and reset your game to make sure you don't lose out.

33
You really should be running more than one Gust of Wind-that card is truly broken, in the same league as (Super) Energy Removal.

34
One nice thing about this game is the fact that the CPUs aren't playing super-optimal decks, so you have the freedom to explore the cards more than you would have at a tournament back in the day (there were really only three viable tournament decks from the card pool in this game). If they were real people I'd feel bad about beating them so badly, though-I often have games where the CPU gets like one prize at most.

What does everyone think of the aspect of losing a game when your last Pokemon in play is knocked out? This is commonly brought up as a design flaw in the card game, so I was curious what people thought.

There are already Rayman-related trophies in the game, so this wouldn't be a complete surprise.

Jwitzz would be a good choice, as would a number of other prominent TCG players I've had the pleasure of meeting over the years.

For the Pokemon TCG game, if it gets picked you should definitely find someone who's familiar with the current state of the TCG to make some comparisons. As it turns out, there are actually a number of (unfortunate) parallels between problems in the original TCG and the BW generation of cards. The GB game itself is actually pretty fun, though, so don't let that discourage you.

TalkBack / Re: On Punch-Out!! And Review Scores
« on: January 23, 2015, 12:02:06 AM »
One thing that's kinda bothered me about Wii Punch-Out is that there's no Hitmonchan, or any of Nintendo's other characters that wear boxing gloves like the kangaroo from Oracle of Seasons. It seems strange that they would include Donkey Kong and not pull from their other franchises.

I generally avoid giving scores entirely when I review things, instead opting to present the relevant facts so the viewer/reader is forced to decide on their own. There's nothing inherently wrong with review scores, I just prefer not to use them.

Did pretty well-4 games, 3 questions.

2. I've been playing this off and on on 3DS with save states in an attempt to see what happens when you reach 100 million points.

5. Glad you were able to get in a game from The Wizard for the 25th anniversary (was that a factor?)-probably one of the last few major ones that hasn't been used on the show yet, other than super-obvious SMB1 & SMB2.

Anyone know how many blocks it consumes?

I do wonder why the original isn't on 3DS virtual console. I'd certainly be willing to buy both. I'd also love to see a new one too.

Well, if it's animated, at worst they'll lose less money than the last Mario movie. I suppose now this'll definitely mean the HD transfer of the '93 movie will be coming over to piggyback on the buzz for this one.

Sorry to hear that you think Pokemon TFM is "trash", Karl-granted, back when I originally saw it, I didn't think it was that good either, but now I actually regard it as being fairly decent (though not without its faults), and I think I understand why it's the cultural touchstone that it is. I'd love to see a Connectivity segment discussing the movie at some point.

As for the actual BOP movie discussion, I'm glad Jonny was there, as I'm not sure the segment would have held together without his factual perspective on the WC franchise and how it relates to the movie. If I had to level one criticism at it, I don't feel it was really all that exciting-for whatever reason, the space combat action didn't grab me-in particular, I didn't like the part near the end where the enemy fleet is getting easily destroyed since the coordinates are already known, something about that just felt like a letdown.

It still puzzles me that there isn't a Pokemon TV app for either system.

What about Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat? All right, I'll stop giving you guys ideas for next year.

I did hear that BiMP episode a few months back, but I feel like you can never talk about The Wizard enough (at least I can't  ;D ).

I'm disappointed to hear that the BOP for this year's telethon will be Wing Commander-I had really hoped for either The Wizard or Pokemon: The First Movie (when you mentioned 1999 I really thought that was going to be it). I'm sure there's plenty to talk about with Wing Commander (to be fair, I've never seen it), but I think either of the ones I mentioned would have been better in terms of discussion and a fit for the audience. Can we add another stretch goal for the telethon and keep you guys for another hour?

I wonder which voice actor they'll use for Mewtwo-the one from Melee* or the ones from movie 16.

*Melee used the same Japanese VA for both English and Japanese, most likely due to Philip Bartlett, Mewtwo's English VA, dying earlier in 2001.

What movie are you doing for BOP? Last year was the 20th anniversary of SMB, so I assume it's either The Wizard (25th anniversary) or Pokemon: The First Movie (15th anniversary). Either way, I'd really like to be involved. I know I can call in, but I consider myself very knowledgeable on both, and I think I would have a lot to add.

P.S. If it's Pokemon TFM, have fun getting a copy-it's been out of print since 2009 when WB's rights expired and goes for about $20 used. The Wizard you can buy off iTunes.

It's probably easier to give more choices when you don't have to worry about how much to produce. Depending on how closely the rewards are produced, Nintendo may just have to make an educated guess.

TYP, have you considered getting someone else to help find/record some of the music for Radio Trivia (assuming that would help you get episodes out more frequently)? I really like the podcast, but it would be nice if episodes came out more often.
