"Cons: Awful MIDI quality instrumentation"

Nitpicking, but MIDI is a protocol used even in professional grade music equipment. It is not the crappy MIDI synth/instrumentation that comes with most sound cards these days.

Do you think they left this out to reduce customer service calls/repairs? I mean, if people watched dvd's in addition to playing games all the time, that's more wear and tear on the system. And I'm guessing the disc would spin a lot more during a movie than during typical gameplay. Perhaps they didn't know how it would hold up over time with heavy usage.

A dark substance called "Corruption"? COME ON. If you're going to copy the idea, at least give it a new name.

Anyone think they did this on purpose? It certainly has raised awareness about the game.

Since the Wii does not emit the infrared signal that is required to operate televisions, Nintendo achieved this by sending the television command from the Wii sensor bar, which bounces off the Wii Remote's pointer head and back to the television.  Nintendo recommends placing the sensor bar near to where the TV set receives it normal remote control information for optimal performance of this.

I thought the sensor bar wire was a power cord only. So how could you instruct it to blink in a particular pattern? By modulating the power itself? Interesting.

HOLY **** is Nintendo trying to do this right for once? And where's the Super Smash Bros. Brawl Channel?

It's a separate channel, yet you can only see when your friends are playing one specific game. How is that doing it right?

If it's a separate channel, you should at least be able to see when your friends are playing ANY game.

But there are game-specific friend codes, so they'll never be able to implement it right even if they wanted to.

Bad design from the outset. Nintendo dug themselves into a hole. Like they hired some cheap contractors to come up with their online architecture.

Nice writeup, but shouldn't you guys have a REview by now? :)

I kid. Not that it matters, we all know what to expect anyway.

As far as the rolling gesture goes:

They tell you to make "little circles" at the edge of the screen, but really all you need to do is scribble the stylus back and forth at the edge of the screen. It works great.

On second thought, it's not really clicking, its just generic seeking/loading sounds. I don't know how else to describe it.

I would classify it as extremely loud. It's much louder than my slim PS2.

GP: The clicking/whirring when switching channels freaks me out too...

Just to clarify I'm talking about reading from a game disc, not from the internal flash memory.

« on: November 08, 2007, 09:05:44 AM »
Whenever it reads from disk, i hear loud mechanical "clicking" sounds, and some softer "beeping" noises to boot.

Although the Wii works fine, the sound is really annoying.

It's been happening so long I can't remember if it's always been like this or not.

Is this the norm, or should I get it serviced? TIA..

Why couldn't they just give the option of using bongos? Would that be so hard?

This would have been a day one purchase for me too, but now I'll wait for NWR's review before even considering it.

Yeah, they are hideous and unnecessary from my point of view, but sometimes it's about safeguarding your stuff from *other* people... I think these jackets would really be appreciated by people with young kids.

TalkBack / RE:REVIEWS: Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
« on: September 03, 2007, 09:02:22 AM »
Couldn't agree more with everything that was said. This game is a masterpiece.

I applaud Retro for keeping their own direction with this series. They could have turned Metroid into a first-person shooter. Instead we got a subtle, engrossing, sci-fi forensic investigation with minor shooting elements. One thing Johnny said rings especially true: that the Scan Visor is the defining characteristic of the game. Some of my favorite moments are scanning the various items and reading "Initial activation 132.8 years ago". You really feel like you're in some odd, deteriorating, ancient foreign world. The story and environments are so detailed and rich, it feels like a sci-fi novel wrapped in a video game.

Here's looking forward to Retro's next project. I have to admit I am saddened to see this trilogy come to an end. I do hope they work on another Metroid title at some point in the future.

TalkBack / RE:Metroid Prime 3 Prompts System Update
« on: August 28, 2007, 10:41:27 AM »
What's worrisome is that mine said "Wii update failed" until I tried it a second time. If this update is stored on the disk, there should be no room for errors. My Wii was fully up to date prior to this as well.

That doesn't necessarily prove this is Prime-specific... It might have just checked, saw your system was up to date, and quit.
