Miyamoto and Iwata have hinted at a final secret for Wii that has yet to be revealed. And while we're sworn to secrecy, 1UP knows what this secret is -- and it's rather revolutionary. In fact, it's perhaps the most intriguing element of the system -- something with some rather cool implications for gaming. Let's just say that people have more to look forward to at E3.

They also hint at a couple new games on the next page.

Seeing as how they mentioned the nunchuck having motion control in the same article, we know that the final secret is something else.  Something better.

That's also the article that got me used to the name Wii.

They protect this secret more than anything else. Could it possibly be more important than the controller? It almost definitely has to do with the console itself, but is this secret perhaps the "Wii"* aspect of the system and not the controller? Interesting. PPU is seeming more and more likely when considering the EA guys comment about how much calculating was necessary just to do the controls for Madden. Although it'd be rather disappointing if it did have a PPU and the pics of Red Steel were the best they could do thus far.
Silly monkeys; give them thumbs they make a club and beat their brother down. How they survive so misguided is a mystery. Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an a eye to heaven conscious of his fleeting time here.

OK now that is severely uncalled for...

Yes, I know some people are ignorant enough that they will NOT buy the Revolution because of the new name.

But all of us that have expressed our dislike of the name have made some very good opinions on it and are really concerned on it. So having people like you call us morons because you don't agree with our opinion is very childish.

You don't mind the new name? Fine. But please, refrain from posting comments like that.

Remember that some of these "morons" keep Planet Gamecube afloat and have expressed their dislike of the game. If it weren't for people like them, you wouldn't be here with your loli rape icon saying we are morons because we dislike the new name.

If you think our anger towards the new name is childish in there, why don't you stay there?

We both have our reasons for liking and hating the new name. We both have argued our opinions with good and bad points.

So why the hostily towards us that hate the new name? Because it's not what you think.

Then you can't read, or refuse to do so.  I have mentioned why Nintendo can't afford to slip up with anything-even if it's a perceived slip up, it's all the same when you're trying to change an image that has been called Ki Dee.  The name is horrible for marketing, in my opinion.  I also said I am buying it, but I would buy it no matter what the name is.  The same cannot be said for those who aren't Nintendo whores.

Gamers in the US are easily swayed by image. EVERYONE in the US is, gamers are no exception. With Red Steel, the Rev looked like it would do what Nintendo has needed to do for a while: take back some of that older demographic market share and earn itself something other than a 3rd place finish.

Revolution was an EXCELLENT name: it described exactly what Nintendo intended to do. The word "Revolution" has been known far and wide as the act of change via force, and that's a pretty bold statement by Nintendo, one which EVERYONE in the world can recognize.

"Wii" lacks that power. It doesn't have the oomph, it doesn't have the name recognition and it sounds like some marketing executive was just trying far too hard to come up with something new and daring.

"Wii" play together? That's not very far from Xbox Live's tagline "It's good to play together."

So, the reasons why I think the name is a bad idea:

1. It's a bad pun. Puns are like passing jokes. Naming a console after a pun? Huh?

2. It loses massive appeal in the US. I don't care what anyone says, Nintendo needs to take back some of the US market and this is arguably their last chance to do so. The name "Revolution" is a very strong name, one which every American can relate to. There are plenty of gamers who I'm sure were on the fence but will decide not to own a "Wii".

3. Nintendo needs as broad of an appeal as it can get. Now is not the time to be changing a name which is already very well received to a name which needs to be explained before anyone even knows how to pronounce it. If I didn't know beforehand, my guess would be that it's some kind of German stereo system, not Nintendo's revolutionary new console.

4. The name just sounds diminutive, weak and lifeless. The DS was named the DS because that's what it was: a handheld with Dual Screens. The Rev was going to be the Revolution in home gaming. The KISS motto (keep it simple, stupid) was the WAY to go here. It worked for the DS and I have no doubt it would have worked for the Rev.

I think the name is a bad idea. I know it's going to hurt sales. There's not a doubt in my mind that Nintendo will LOSE sales because of this name change.

Furthermore, our opinions don't matter. We're PGC posters: we're the hardest of the hardcore Nintendo fanboys. You think what WE think of the console name means anything? We're already guaranteed sales.

We're not Nintendo's target market because they don't need to do any marketing to us. Their target market is the player who wasn't going to buy their console and I know for a fact that they've alienated likely thousands of those with this weak and unimpressive name.

I'd like to see how you think a controversy over something like a name (which probably expanded the attention it was getting at all by a lot, in fact) is going to continue to outweigh what we'll be seeing at E3.

And like I said in the other topic, "PlayStation" (as a "station of play") is probably the most childish name of a console ever.  As I said, a play station belongs in a day care.  Now tell me if that name didn't become accepted, or that its name hurt its sales.  You can't, can you?

Regardless of what you think of the name (hey, I don't think it's hot either), I'm going to be experiencing one in less than two weeks and I bet a bunch of people will have one before the year is over.  Yeah, some stupid people will simply NOT buy it because of the name, but I don't really care what THEY think.

I think we are all talking about the name because it is the latest news and, as has been pointed out a few times in the past weeks, we do not have much info to talk about. Once more info is revealed at E3, it will be much bigger than the name.

So having people like you call us morons because you don't agree with our opinion is very childish.
He usually is when people are insufficiently adulatory towards Nintendo.

I've turned this name over in my head, asked myself if it can grow on me. And I've decided that if it does, I will lose all respect for myself. Because it could maan Nintendo really could do anything, and I would convince myself it's right. I would basically have to abandon any pretense that my opinions about Nintendo had any validity, because I would always convince myself that Nintendo knows best.

And there are no "intriguing possibilities" in a name. As has been said, it's a name. There are no depths or aspects to be revealed. A year from now, it will still suck just as much.

Come on now. You've never disagreed with any Nintendo decisions so far?

Be that as it may, I like this name but no amount of Nintendo PR can make me accept Metroid Prime Hunters or this vapid online direction they seem to be going in.

Let the marketing execs at Nintendo decide on the most effective name for their console... but when marketing seeps into and effectively lobotomizes the games they make is when I get angry.

Anyway... the editorial/blog seems to have been edited since the quote, because they no longer directly claim to know the secret.

I'm thinking "Wii", in the context the site used it, indicates that Nintendo is not only doing something with online play, but they intend to do something with it that no one has ever done before. Then again, that could be hype and we're used to seeing things like that be overblown by Nintendo.

Either that, or like the editors suggested in their discussion, Wii stands for "Wireless Interactive Innovation" or something along those lines, indicative of the Revmote.

Not to be the harbinger of sorrow or anything, but all this talk about "we will change it together" seems to indicate that Nintendo has some rather extensive online plans.

At least, that'd be my first guess.

I just had an inspiration.  Im not sure if anyone has thought about this before, so Im gonna say it.  We all know the Wii (I still dont like the sound of that) has usb ports, what if you could load software on the system so that you could hook up your keyboard to the system to chat on the internet during the game, or I could hook up my webcam so you could all see my pretty face (and block other's webcams incase people decide to be... inappropriate).  A headphone with a mike could also be hooked up.

Something like this probably wouldnt be the big secret, but it would be pretty smart, People wouldnt have to buy all of the accessories that they already have for their computers.

No. No webcam, no keyboard, no separate mic. I don't want this thing turning into a WiiCii.

Does it have anything to do with the new name, right now I think the name is crummy, but if Wii somehow means something, I think I could reserve judgement untill E3.
Considering Jim didn't know about the name and was as surprised about it as us, I don't think so..

EDIT: Jim already replied..

Edit Also what if Wii is really a hint at the true purpose of the Wii.  There can only be 1 Wii per person why you might ask.  Well it's really a symbiote like Venom.  Once you get your Wii it will integrate itself into you and you shall then truly be a We.  The digitial components of it will allow you to access the internet wirelessly with your mind.  Interface and exchange information with other people vy your USB ports.  Maybe after honing yourself well enough with another Wii user combining to be one Wii unit helping control the population.

So what do I sacrifice for this greatness?  Some indepence that's all.  The Wii side of you would be controllable therefore making you controllable to.  Then the Revolution will occur.  Nintendo will rised to the domninance of nations and no one will now it.  We will unwitting puppets at there greatness.  Never the wiser.  For We are Wii and We came to play.

I think 1up did some backpedaling because the quote you referenced actually reads like this now:

I know the "big" secret isn't this but I do hope they have one:  a wireless headset.  I don't know why some people think a mic in the revmote would work...the wind in the mic would mess everything up if you are moving the revmote around and your distance to the mic wouldn't be close enough and would be constently changing.  This is why they need to come out with a cool little wireless headset for their wifi games.

Also, if Nintendo reveals something even close to as big as the original controller revealing then...I will be stunned.  Nintendo knows how to own E3 though and this year they already have it in the bag imo...call it a gut feeling

So you just blindly go against what the majority says without even questioning your own motives?

I'd suggest contemplating the consequences and weighing the evidence before I tried to form an opinion, not just adopt a counter opinion and run with it.

The thing with this big secret is that no matter how hard we try, we wont come up with anything close to the truth, the same happen with the controller, and the speculation was huge, yet barely anyone got it right.

And we are two weeks away from finding out, so I see any speculation about the secret as a waste of time.

*strains to avoid talking about the frigging name*

I'm very interested in the final secret.  I have trouble imagining something that could be as exciting as the controller itself.  And if it's better than the nunchuck having some motion detection...well, that wasn't  HUGE, but it was already a cool addition, in my opinion.

Maybe some ultra-realistic force-feedback?  It would be cool, but I doubt it can be done in a wireless controller without sacrificing a ton of battery life.  Ultimately, whatever it is will probably take me totally by surprise.  I'm getting really excited now!
That's my opinion, not yours.

Full body integration would give you the 3D vision and Force Feedback.  Once you are a Wii you will be whole and united.  The virtual world will be yours.  Reboot games, .hack games, and Tron games will have a true new meaning.  It will redefine not paying attention.  All for only $199.99.

I really can't figure out what the surprise is.

But, I am curious and excited to see what Nintendo is capable of doing.  They are really quite impressive when they go all out on games, hardware and ect.  Always thinking outside the box to where we can't even fathom what the creators are thinking.

I hope to GOD it has something to do with "wee" so the name will make more sense.

Like a wee little man live inside the Rev and comes out to talk to you or something...

And I think this psycho-babble bullsh*t about "wii will be one and wii will change the world" is far, FAR more likely to scare off non-gamers than any other possible name out there.

After the controller, and Wii, there is little that could surprise me.

It would have to literally sing and dance while you played.

Side note: if it turns out to be singing and dancing I should get a prize.

Blah blah blah.  I'll do what I want, thanks.  Besides, this is the internet.  You think it's going to  affect anything?  You think I'm not competent enough to handle things in reality?
Y'see, if I didn't oppose your opinion, PGC would have just been a cesspit of stupid whining from everyone who didn't like it.  For a while I was the only one saying anything different, midday Thursday.  And that annoys me more than any name ever could, so I couldn't let that pass.
Gotta have priorities.
