That's what Nintendo is thinking right there. If most Pokemon fans feel the need to get this then it'll most definitely sell some Cubes.

I don't think high costs to third parties is the real issue here. The problem is that most 3rd party games just don't sell well on the GC, atleast compared to X-Box and PS2. It comes down to 3rd parties having to decide if selling  20,000 copies of their game on the GC will make them any money or are they just wasting it having to take the time to port it over. If I was a 3rd party developer I'd put my games on PS2 first simply because of the large user base. I'd go to X-Box second because chances are it would sell better on this system than the GC. And GC would be last for me...speaking from a potential profit standpoint.

So why don't 3rd party games sell well on the GC? I'd say the biggest reason is Nintendo themselves. Their games are usually better than what a 3rd party developer will come up with. People that bought the GC did so because of Nintendo's franchises. That's what they buy. I'm not sure if age is as big a factor as many will have you believe. Personally, I'm 30 yrs old and only own a GC. I'll usually buy 10-12 games a year. Of those games, you can bet that 5 or 6 will be from Nintendo because that's what I bought the GC for. The remaining 4 or 5 will go to third party games. I'm guessing that most people don't buy that many games a year. And when you only buy 3 or 4 games a year, Zelda, Mario and Pokemon will be bought while Resident Evil, Skies of Arcadia, and Madden sit on the shelves. Thus 3rd parties don't sell well. On the PS2 and X-Box, the 3rd parties biggest competitor (Nintendo) has already been eliminated. It's a catch-22 for Nintendo.

Animal Crossing and Pikmin are two new franchises for Nintendo since the GC has been released.

Hey Bonethugs....just thought you'd like to see this. Remember how you thought this game wouldn't be discounted because the quality was so high? Well, take a look:

http://www.circuitcity.com/frame1.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1691144909.1049658359@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccadchmjfimlkcfngcfkmdffhdffl.0&upper=head.jsp&lower=frame2.jsp&department=Video+Games&category=GameCube+Games&right=departments.jsp&left=leftchildcat.jsp&subDept=GameCube&inleftcat=Games

Give it another month or two and it'll be down to the magic $20 mark...just as I predicted

Nintendo Gaming / GBA trade ins?
« on: April 05, 2003, 06:12:49 AM »
Are you sure it's that cheap? In the newest issue of EGM there is a coupon in which you can trade in your GBA and pay $59.99 for a GBA SP. I'd think all EB's would have the same policy.

"Star Fox Adventures is worth it, too"

"Im sorry, but dont get SF:A or Eternal Darkness. I completely beat both games and they totally suck"

"SF:A is only good if you like banjo kazooie/tooie etc. (collect-me-ups)"

"but I would say SFA was worth the buy. I loathe Banjo-Kazooie, and all the games Rare has made, but this one was okay."

Just to prove how valuable it is to try a game out for yourself and not listen to others, let me throw in my opinion too. I have bought SFA and played through it twice. I would say it's a little above average when you look at the total package and definitely not up there with Nintendo's titles or even Rare's previous games. I, however, loved both Banjo games on the N64. So there you are, another contradicting opinion to what everyone else has listed

Nintendo Gaming / I am a 31 year old new GC owner
« on: March 29, 2003, 08:44:14 AM »
I'm part of the 30 yr old crowd too that plays Nintendo all the time. Actually, I'm exactly 30, married with a 10 yr old daughter that is almost as obsessed as me, although not quite!

My first console was a Colecovision with an Atari 2600 adapter. In '87 my parents bought me an NES for Christmas, in '91 I bought the SNES, in '96 I bought the N64 on launch day, and I was at Walmart at midnight to pick up my GC when it released. Zelda: Wind Waker was the 20th GC game I have bought. The GC is the only current generation console I have and really, I don't need any more. I play it every day and still don't have enough time to complete all my games. Plus, there are games out that I still want to get.

As long as Nintendo keeps making consoles, I'll be buying them. There is just a special feeling I get when playing Nintendo's first party games that other games fail to deliver. Some may complain about Nintendo being too kiddy, not selling enough, not advertising enough, or whatever....all I know is that Nintendo has the games I want. My favorite 3 are probably Zelda: Wind Waker, Animal Crossing, and Mario Sunshine, all of which are "supposed" to be targeted for young kids. Whatever.

Nintendo Gaming / I don't like metroid prime. Heres why:
« on: March 17, 2003, 12:29:37 PM »
I really agree with the topic of this thread. The graphics and music are top notch and the sense of discovery is good too. I also liked fighting the enemies. That being said, it seemed like there were many times I found myself playing it not because I was having a blast but because I felt like I needed to to beat it to justify my purchase. It's strange...the incentive to play was just not there for me. It took me a good 2 months to beat it because I could only play an hour or so at a time before getting tired of it...maybe 2 or 3 times a week.

I totally hated the scanning, well, not actually doing it but reading what I scanned. The futuristic/technological language that was used did not appeal to me at all. I'd read 2 lines and quickly become bored with it. I realize it goes with the setting but I'd much rather have had it voiced to me instead of having to read something I didn't want to. Or have plain common english used.

Are you sure about that? I think Zelda was out before Final Fantasy 1.

We shall see....I do know that ASB2003 was selling for $20 long before ASB2004 was released. I took note because it pissed me off that I had payed $50 at release only to see it  discounted a short time later. I can wait till the middle of summer and save $30.

Easy batting is more realistic??? Come on...you NEVER strikeout when you play that way. How is that realistic? Not only that, but I feel like you get hits totally randomly when playing with no batting cursor. Swing the bat and you've got just as much chance for a homerun as you do a groundout. It's all luck and totally unrealistic. Atleast using the cursor you can tell whether you get good wood on the ball and know how hard you hit it. And there is some skill involved, the batting cursor was just a bit too slow.

And can you name any Acclaim game that isn't in the bargain bins after being released for a few months?

Nintendo Gaming / have you ever been so bored with AC
« on: March 05, 2003, 04:01:19 PM »
I've had the game since it launched in Sept and have gotten bored with it once. I went about a week without playing it in Jan. But then I started reading about snowmen and igloos and began playing again. I'm still playing today and outside of that one week have never missed two days in a row. I put a solid hour to an hour and a half into every day. Actually, I don't think I'm going to quit playing until next Sept after I've seen all the holidays. That's incredible because I rarely play a game more than a month.

All of my other games have suffered though....I beat Mario but never got all the shines because AC took too much of my time, it took me 2 months to get through Metroid because of AC, and I'm only a third of the way through Resident Evil 0 and haven't played for weeks due to AC. Surely AC won't keep me away from Zelda will it?

The in-game save has been needed for years now. I hated having to have a whole hour to waste before I could even think of playing it. However, I have last year's version and will probably just stick with that one for now. I figure this new one will be $20 within a few months anyway.

How is the hitting though? Is it the same as last year? I always played with the batting cursor on but the pitch location off which meant you had to guess the pitch and then adjust when the ball was actually pitched. Problem was was the batting cursor was just a tad too slow making it very hard to adjust. I constantly had a high number of strikeouts per game (10-15), even after playing it numerous times and getting used to it. Has Acclaim tweaked it or is it the same as last year?

Nintendo Gaming / Does the rest of your family play the cube?
« on: March 02, 2003, 12:41:12 PM »
I'm the gaming fanatic in my family. I'm 30 and have majorly addicted to games since I got my NES in '87. My wife only plays every once in awhile. She got into Animal Crossing for awhile but while I've been playing it 6 months now, she quit about 3 or 4 months ago. She doesn't really play anything now although she really wants me to buy The Sims when it comes out for the GC. My 10 yr old daughter plays a lot. She'll often play my older games though like stuff on the Sega Genesis. She is playing my Zelda Master Quest disc right now too.

Nintendo Gaming / Disturbing comments-again
« on: March 02, 2003, 12:30:15 PM »
"The Mario and Zelda audience has historically been a younger audience and so the art style was derived to take advantage of that target market."

What is wrong with that statement? It's true. Who are the people that want Mario and Zelda games? Kids or adults that discovered Mario/Zelda when they were kids themselves. Nobody is saying that adults can't enjoy them, heck I'm 30 and I buy all of them. But are they games that most adults care about? I'd have to say no, check out the sales figures compared to games like Madden or GTA. Yeah, sure, there are some adults that buck the trend but the majority are not pulled toward Nintendo's games. Publishers pick up on this.

Nintendo Gaming / Animal Crossing, what's soo good about the game?
« on: March 02, 2003, 12:06:23 PM »
This is one game that everyone just needs to try out for themselves, even if you think it sounds stupid/childish/repetitive, whatever. I'm certainly not saying that everyone that plays it will fall in love with it. I can certainly see some people just thinking it's boring. However, I'm sure there are a ton of gamers out there that will never give it a chance that would end up becoming addicted to it if they just tried it.

I've had the game since launch and to this day rarely miss a day of playing it. That's almost 6 months of solid playing and I'm still not tired of it. I have 16 other GC games and I can honestly say that none of the other ones have held my interest more than two months. You beat them and move on to the next game. This isn't how AC works. You can't beat it, you just live it. There is no replaying levels trying to get through them, no frustrating bosses, no timer to beat....you just leisurely play, whatever way you want to. Actually, I'm having trouble keeping up with other releases because AC has been my primary game since its launch...even with having brand new copies of Star Fox, Metroid, and Resident Evil 0 in that time. Sure I play them but AC is the game that gets played first every day.

There is definite repetition but there's just enough variety to keep me interested. I've probably seen some of the comments the animals make over 50 times each. But then an animal will say something I've never read before that will make me take notice. Not only that but their conversations will center on the time of year or an upcoming holiday which is cool and means you've got a solid year of seeing new things.

I'm 30 years old and own all the Nintendo systems back to the NES. I've probably got over 140 games for these Nintendo systems and yet Animal Crossing is my favorite of all time. I encourage everyone to atleast give it a chance.

Nintendo Gaming / Miyamoto interview! Heaps of news!
« on: February 22, 2003, 06:57:36 AM »
The problem I have had with the whole GC/GBA connectivity is that so far it's almost all geared toward giving the GC game the bonuses. In other words, if you have a GC game the GBA can enhance it a little if you own one. They are going the wrong direction with that. The GBA is having no problem selling, it's the GC that needs the boost. They need to make GBA owners think they need the GC.

They should take their biggest GBA games (like Pokemon) and make it connect to the GC to give the GBA owners incentive to want to buy the GC. I'm not up-to-date with the whole Pokemon situation but don't you need the GBA game to make the upcoming GC game work? I think I read about that somewhere and I think it has potential although I'm skeptical about the connectivity being necessary. Anyway, have a GBA pokemon game, connect it to your GC and all of a sudden you've got new areas to explore and new pokemon to find. Just watch how something that simple begins to sell GC's, especially in Japan.

I can't believe the GC and GBA have been out together for more than a year and Nintendo hasn't exploited this.

But reading that interview, there is no doubt in my mind that I have chosen the best system for me. It's too bad that I don't agree with the mainstream but so be it. Nintendo is where it's at.

Nintendo Gaming / Reviews for GC games: How much do you depend on them?
« on: February 18, 2003, 06:47:20 AM »
I think almost everyone who is knowledgable of the gaming industry depends on reviews to some extent. Why would you not want to? Back when I started playing the NES there was no internet and very few game mags to check up on games with. I remember going to a store plenty of times with $50 in my pocket having no idea what to get. I'd judge a game solely by looking at the back of the box. That's all I had and often got burned by doing this. Fifty bucks is a lot of money to get burned on, especially when you didn't have a job.

Reviews are cool because it gives you an idea of what the game is like. Now just because some game gets 9's and 10's across the board doesn't mean I'll go buy it. I still don't have Smash Bros' because I don't like fighting games. And just because someone gives a game a 5 or 6 doesn't mean I won't enjoy it.

We all know what kind of games we like. It's stupid not to use reviews to make sure it's what you think it is. Even if you just listen to a friend, he's still giving you his review so really you are using reviews. Use common sense and looking at reviews can't hurt.

Nintendo Gaming / Capcom should have put more effort into RE:0
« on: February 18, 2003, 06:29:08 AM »
I own both of the GC games (Resident Evil and Resident Evil 0). I've played through the first one 2 or 3 times and this was my first real experience with the franchise. I thought it was great and loved the atmosphere. The whole mansion just had a spooky personality to it.

I'm playing through RE0 right now and am estimating I'm probably a third of the way through it. So far, it just isn't doing it for me like the first one did. The "scares" just aren't there, atleast not yet. The mansion in this one just doesn't have the same feeling as the first one. I'm hoping it gets better but so far I'd prefer the first one.

Nintendo Gaming / Are you satisfied with your Cube at the moment?
« on: February 18, 2003, 06:13:45 AM »
I'm very happy with the Cube so far. I've had it since midnight of launch day and I probably average 1-2 hours a day, more on weekends playing the thing. The first few months were a little dry with quality games but I was able to occupy myself perfecting my Wave Race: Blue Storm runs, playing through Luigi's Mansion a few times, and playing Monkey Ball. Since summer of last year though, there has always been a game that I'm in the process of playing through. Now, it's to the point that I'm falling behind with what I want to do. I still want to earn all 120 shines in Mario Sunshine (I had 112 when I quit playing) but now I just want to start all over and play completely through it again. I just don't have the time though, which is cool.

I just started running through the hard mode on Metroid Prime, I'm in the middle of my first play through of Resident Evil 0, and I've been hopelessly addicted to Animal Crossing for 5 months now. On top of that I've been looking for good deals on Cube games such as when I got Nascar Thunder 2003 for $20. I missed out on the Beach Spikers for $10. But playing these "older" games keeps me busy too. Not to mention the fact that I badly want Skies of Arcadia but am waiting till I get some of my other games finished. And Zelda comes out next month? And I'm getting the bonus disks?

How could I not be satisfied?

There is also a ton of games scheduled to release this year that I'm very interested in along with the GameBoy Player that will significantly add to the time I spend playing my Cube.

Nintendo Gaming / ok! so i'm a Nintendo FREAK!
« on: February 17, 2003, 04:34:42 PM »
I know exactly what you mean. I'm a diehard Nintendo fan and will buy whatever consoles they put out. I buy and thoroughly enjoy almost all of the first party stuff. I've played the other consoles and I don't even think it's close when it comes to quality and bang for the buck with each game. I've had this love for Nintendo ever since my parents bought me an NES back when I was in the 9th grade.

However, if someone asks me which console to buy, I direct them toward the PlayStation. Anybody that asks me is obviously a friend or a relative so I'm not going to try trick them for the sake of selling a Nintendo system. My loyalties are to them before Nintendo. Everyone that has ever asked me has been a casual fan that will only buy 2 or 3 titles a year. And I know they'd rather buy a Grand Theft Auto game than a Mario game despite Mario being great.

It's strange really. I know in my heart that Nintendo is much better than Sony and Microsoft yet I also know that if you aren't a diehard videogame player you will probably never realize this. Casual gamers will dismiss Zelda as a cartoon and not give it a second thought while diehards like me will realize the brilliance of it. It's that way with most of Nintendo's great GC games.

Nintendo Gaming / Eternal Darkness Request
« on: February 14, 2003, 04:03:02 PM »
I think the game is overrated too. I liked it but to call it the best game on the GC as so many do, I don't think it's even close. I'd probably give it an 8. I loved the story and the different environments you were put in to but in the end you constantly solved the same puzzles and battled the same enemies over and over again. I played all 3 paths but looking back, there is no way I'd want to do it again.

I loved the concept of the insanity effects but after you had seen 2 or 3, the rest just didn't work the rest of the game because they were expected. I'll give them an A for effort though.

Nintendo Gaming / Drought? What drought?
« on: February 09, 2003, 11:45:10 AM »
I totally agree that there are more than enough games out there to satisfy most people on the Cube. I'll admit that I sometimes wish the Cube had some of the X-Box and PS2 games but realistically, I can't keep up as it is.

I'm 30 and work a full time job. I also have a wife and daughter...even so, I can still find a couple hours a day for for Nintendo and even more on the weekends. I'm certainly not rich but money isn't really an issue when buying games either. I mean I can plunk down $50 for a new game anytime I want. The issue is time, there just isn't enough of it.

I've had the Cube since launch day and now have 16 games for it. I try to play through each and every one of them to get the most out of them. Most Nintendo first party games offer a ton of gameplay/replay which eats up time. For instance, I bought Animal Crossing back in Sept and still play this game daily. That's 4 months! But because of this, it leaves less time for other games. I'm playing through Resident Evil 0 and having fun with Nascar Thunder 2003. Because of this, it'll probably take me a good 6+ weeks to play through RE0 which will be close to Zelda's release. However, I want to play through Skies of Arcadia too but I won't buy it until I'm ready for it. Who knows when that will be.

I could use a long drought just to catch up. But I just don't see it.
