Nintendo Gaming / PS2 price cut
« on: May 13, 2003, 08:10:21 PM »
The X-Box has dropped to $179.99 also according to the ebgames.com website.   Nothing for Nintnedo yet.

Nintendo really better plan on dropping its price also to at least $130 if not more.  I think a $99.99 price would do wonders, but I doubt Nintnedo woudl be willing to take the significant hit in profits.

Nintendo Gaming / Gotcha Force gameplay video

It's like a kiddie version of Virtual On! (a game I absolutely love.)

Still looks awesome, especially the combining of the two mechs.

After first seeing Pac-Man, I thought "LAME!".  But then I was reading about it and it sounded pretty cool, haha.   But I still hope this isn't it... c'mon, there just has to be something else... this just isn't "big" enough.

Toadstool Tour?!

What a horrible name.  Nintendo needs to stop playing with alliteration.

Nice.  I can actually play the occasional sports game with franchise mode finally.

Blah blah blah.  Same discussion over and over again.

It's always nice to have the option of internet gameplay than not having it all.

Nintendo Gaming / Prime vs. Windwaker
« on: April 27, 2003, 06:00:30 PM »
I'm liking Windwaker MUCH more than Metroid Prime right now.  In fact I haven't even beaten Metroid Prime yet as I don't really feel like playing it. I just have to go around and collect the rest of the artifacts now, but YAWN.   Theres not story that keeps me hooked to keep playing.  All I'm doing is going around shooting people... nothing more to it.

I suppose I'll attempt to finish it up when Im done w/ Windwaker but its just so boring IMO.

You need composite cables from Nintendo site in order to have progressive scan...

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Kart Discussion (TALK ABOUT MARIO KART HERE)
« on: April 25, 2003, 11:10:58 AM »
I noticed there hasn't been much about "Battle Mode".  All the screenshots look like they are from the Grand Prix Racing mode also...

Heck, I haven't even seen one single comment about the existence of a battle mode.   I'm not too sure how this would work w/ 2 characters per kart even...  Thoughts/comments?

Nintendo Gaming / Mario Kart LAN

I'm note sure if the cables connect console to console, or you use a device to connect the consoles such as a Router or HUB. Maybe someone else can help us out with that.

Well I'm not sure how the GC is setup but to direclty connect two computers you would need a crossover CAT5 cable.   While if you hooked up em up through a hub or router, you can use standard CAT5 cables.  Regardless, the price is neglible (only a few bucks difference.)

I really do hope Gamepsy makes use of LAN tunneling software.   If not, I would think some person or another would set one of these up as long as Nintendo doesn't restrict it.

If you look at the Atarilabs' Video Primer, you'll see that there's a noticable difference in quality between RGB and S-Video. I think that for $100, it's money well spent, considering you don't need to have your PC running at the same time.

It seems that I was wrong about the Viewsonic VB50HRTV being an upscan converter.  Doh.

However, a VGA box is not simply what the Dreamcast had and can make use of.  For example, LikSang offers a VGA box that works for the GC as well as other consoles but it doesn't really do much other than let you play the GC on a monitor, sending nothing more than a VGA compatible signal.   It doesn't improve the qualty of images or such at all.  However, I do suppose what the Dreamcast had can be considered as a "true" VGA box.

Personally, I do not consider the quality difference worth $100+, especially when it can not do progressive scan.   Furthermore,  it simply can't display stuff that isn't there, as w/ the Viewsonic VBR the video will be sent in w/ an s-video cable at best.  It just doesn't have enough to work with.  It will furthermore lose some quality through the pass-through, and it will remain somewhat "fuzzy" as compared to a TV.

Again, you're not going to find much difference in terms of video quality from those VGA boxes and an S-Video TV card.  Unless, you're looking into better upscan converters which do take in RGB but will run $200+, and still can't do progressive.   You should check out the XRGB-2plus review at IGN to understand what I'm saying.

I would personally go for the $40 progressive scan direct cable and get the MUCH improved video image and the sweet 60 fps glory  and for the other games just stick to either a basic VGA box or TV-Card that has S-Video.  But I suppose that is all relative to the individual.

Scyth3r - Using an upscan convertor that takes Component/RGB input will give far better image quality on a VGA monitor than using a TV tuner card with S-Video input.

Yeah and upscan box will imporve the quality but the costs are abusrd IMO. =)   While a standard VGA box (the Viewsonic VBR which he is looking at) will not do much as compared to a TV tuner w/ S-Video in terms of image quality, and especially for $100.

And regarding my comment about the speakers Sea Dragon.  Well of course you can get converters and change the 2 RCA male on the GC so that you can plug into your computer speakers...

Theres a cable out there that does progressive scan for your monitor (and it will look absolutely beautiful doing 480p) but it will only work for progressive scan games.

The games that are progressive scan will look absolutely great on a computer monitor (if you use a progressive scan VGA box/cable).
The games that aren't progressive scan will look okay.

These games are optimized to look best on a TV.   A computer monitor is actually much better than a TV (high resolution, more colors, etc.) and thus games might look worse on a computer monitor since you can see the details (or the lack of more correctly) much clearly.

Personally, I use a TV card w/ S-Video In (Leadtek Winfast 2000XP).    A good TV card and a good VGA box are going to look just about the same (for non progressive scan games).   There are some VGA boxes/cables that support progressive scan which again, will look absolutely great on a computer monitor.

I took looked at the Viewsonic HB50HRTV but I dind't find it worth the costs, considering my TV card will allow me to do much more for half the costs.  The only real downside I see is that the computer has to be on, but I don't find that much of a problem personally.

And lastly, no, the Gamecube doesn't allow stand computer speakers to be plugged into it.

I think it would be better w/ the X-Box.  You'll be able to fit A LOT more candy in there and plus you can jsut take the parts and use it for your PC.

Nintendo Gaming / Pokemon Box
« on: April 15, 2003, 05:34:27 PM »
$15 and comes w/ a Memory 59 card.  Not bad.

But I'm highly dissapointed if this is all it does.  I'll probably end up getting it seeing as its so cheap and could use another memory card anyways (damn sports games eat up basically all of the 256 alone), but what wasted potential with Pokemon on the GC.

TalkBack / Lieberman Talks Videogame Violence... Again
« on: April 10, 2003, 05:30:30 PM »
The ESRB rating system, is nothing more than suggestion.

However, I do believe there is somethign wrong w/ 10 year olds or so playing games like GTA.   However, I do believe Lieberman is pointing the finger at the wrong direction.   It should be pointing at parents first for being so god damn stupid to buy their child such violent video games.

Nintendo Gaming / Would you want these games for Gamecube LAN?
« on: April 08, 2003, 08:00:02 PM »
None.

C&C has gotten progressively worse w/ each remake.  The original was the best IMO.

Starcraft was on the the N64.  Needless to say it was a POS.  lol.

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo lowers profit expectations... again
« on: April 07, 2003, 12:55:31 PM »
Eh, could mean lots of things.  With decreased profits it may be making more of a marketing push or expanding user base and so and so.   Look at Microsoft, profits are little but it has a good amount of market share and user base and such.

It really depends on what you need out of it.  Myself, I would kill for a VGA Box.

A VGA Box won't look any better than a good TV-Card.

TalkBack / GameCube Sales Double in February
« on: March 19, 2003, 09:08:19 PM »
I always here of Gamestop being this huge company and EBGames actually being much smaller, but here in Southern California its just the opposite it seems.  I can find an EBGames in pretty much every single mall, but a Gamestop or one of its sibling companies is a lot harder to find.

48
I watch basketball and football and those are the two games I have. (Madden 2003 and NBA 2K3).  Granted I got em when they were cheap.  I can't justify spending $50 on a game that will be replaced in less than a year with a newer version.

Furthermore, to simply put it.   I got the Gamecube more or less for the platform games and the party games.  Sports games?  Whats the compelling reason to get one over say the X-Box or the computer which has internet play?  NIntendo is making a smart move in having EA work its sports titles w/ the GBA... if gives one advantage for the GC version albiet small still.

Nintendo Gaming / I don't like metroid prime. Heres why:
« on: March 16, 2003, 08:11:04 PM »
I agree.  Theres nothing really to make you keep going.  Theres no advancement in story at all.

I mean updgrades and such are cool, but its still the same thing.  At this point, I'm just trying to finish the game.  I've gotten most of the log book so I know whats happening and such, but thers still nothing dramatic or anything.  I'm just reading and going "okay" and then going on to get the next upgrade.

I just need to go get all the missed artifacts and I will be done.  Good game, but not my flavor to make it great.
