Dumbo looks pretty bad IMO. The CGI is pretty weak. Lion King should be great.

The problem with Dumbo is that the CGI is going to make it hard to imagine that Dumbo can fly. With traditional animation it is easy to suspend that belief. Not so with this animation.

Lion King is going to work because all the animals are acting naturally, and there will be no humans. Lion King should be much better than Jungle Book as well because the quality of animal animations are better. However, I think if I had to choose I would rather just see the original.

They could throw in some real zebras and it would be live action. Who said all that live action had to have people. Is Homeward Bound mostly live action?

Disney also has the option to launch the Catverse. I could see some Jungle Book and Lion King Crossover.

Truth be told all of these Disney remakes have worn out their welcome for me. They feel less genuine with each release and each viewing of said release. Lion King stands a chance of being good, but it will either be a near shot-for-shot remake of the original (and why bother paying money for it when I have the original) or they wander off the path into mediocrity where the only success they get is on the coattails of the original.

Yeah, I'm pretty burned out of them. I may give Lion King a shot, but I have low expectations. Though it would be humorous to see a Hunchback remake attempt to be made considering the darkness of the original material.

I'm maintaining interest in the film because there's the possibility they turn "Can You Feel The Love Tonight?" into a duet with Childish Gambino and Beyonce. Even if it's shot-for-shot, the changes they can do with the songs could be epic.

Also, Beauty and the Beast took some risks with making changes, and some of them actually worked for me. This makes me hopeful they'll take additional risks with other films (though the Mulan rumors had me worried they'd gone off the deep end).

Disney is in a really strange position with these live action remakes. People could ask why make a live action, shot for shot remake? However, whatever they add will be judged by hyper critical fans living off of nostalgia. Personally, I think they should just market it as a new movie and not a remake or beloved classic. Try to tell the story in a new way, but I know that isn't what they are doing. I probably won't see the movies unless my wife or friends want to go...but I also know my dad won't see cartoons, but he would see a "live-action" Lion King. So Disney gets their money with those people.

Dumbo doesn't appear to be "shot4shot" and TLK has atleast 1 new song, but is more or less a "life-like" remake even if they add a few new scenes.

It will bring in the nostalgia crowd who will in turn bring in their multitude kids their friends, and their multitude of kids, and then all their parents too.
If it weren't for A4 launching 2 or so months before it, I would guess this as easily the Top Grossing movie of 2019.

But Disney is already on OVERLOAD next year as it is.....

Dumbo, Aladdin, TLK, Capt. Marvel, Avengers 4, and not even mentioning whatever else they have planned for next year to fill all the gaps.

Dumbo has also not aged well, so Disney is doing right by making changes. I would like to see them do some more re-imaginative stuff with the adaptations, but Mulan rumors got a ton of backlash (at least on twitter), so they could risk losing the nostalgia crowd.

I'm hoping they do for Lion King similar to what they did for Beauty and the Beast which was use songs that were cut. I know Timon has a verse in an existing song that was cut, and honestly, Hakuna Matata could use the extra lyrics (song length is criminally low). The real opportunity is to remix some of the songs a little bit to let the actors/artists infuse some of their own personality into it.

It's a different cut of the movie with 15 minutes of new different scenes.... so I don't think it will, but it would be interesting to see where it falls once the tally is done and combined.
