Cloud gaming is good when it's OPTIONAL, but it's terrible when it's required. Whether it's low Internet speeds in some areas, the risk of the Internet being down in your house (or the service being down), and what will happen when they shut down the service. Cloud only should not, and hopefully never will be, the only option. Sony is basically spitting in our faces by making BC only work through cloud service.

I can't see it selling well initially.  Game consoles are a luxury device.  That's a lot of dough to drop especially with the economy still faltering.
Especially with there being no physical BC on the system.  So whatever games come out initially are all that will work on the system unless PS Cloud is available immediately upon launch and even then, most people are still scared of cloud gaming.
It might sell if Sony adopts the Microsoft rumoured cell-phone-plan model. Small or no upfront cost and monthly subscription fee to both use an online service and to subsidize the cost of the hardware.

How do you figure this? Why is BC so important that if it's not there, it means that we're being spit upon?  There was never a notice by Sony stating that BC would definitely be in the PS4 nor is there some obligation by hardware companies to include it.  If you want to play the old system games, buy a PS3 or PS2 or both.  Both play PS1 games and you can get a PS2 used for $40 and new for under $100 right now.

Man Wii U is stinking up the joint. I wonder how different sales would have been if W101, Game and Wario, and Rayman filled in Jan, Feb, and March? Either way I suppose Nintendo expected 3rd parties to fill in the gaps. Hopefully this is the last major droubt ever for Wii U. Super not likely but I hope so.

I'm glad they release games when they are ready but sometimes I really wonder about their release schedule.

It will be interesting to see when the first worthwhile new game hits the system.

Edit: Stupid IPad with autocorrect and non-stylus controls, so inconvenient.

A theory behind January's weak Wii U sales
...
Almost as soon as Gamasutra published my column on January U.S. retail sales for Nintendo's Wii U, I got two messages from two different sources inside the industry both saying the same unbelievable thing: The Wii U probably sold significantly more than the 57,000 units reported by the NPD Group. How much more? The figure I was hearing was that the total number sold to consumers could go over 100,000 units, nearly twice the original figure.

But it isn't so much that the NPD Group estimate was an error, I was told, but rather it didn't show the full picture.

The figure reported by the NPD Group, the sources' story went on, included perhaps 100,000 units sold to consumers -- and 40,000 or more units returned to stores. The net, then, would yield the 57,000 units reported by the NPD Group.

And the explanation for those tens of thousands of returns? The collapse of the secondary market, those resellers who had purchased Wii U systems in November and December 2012 hoping that popularity and a shortage of systems would yield a tidy profit through Christmas and into the new year. However, profiteers advertising Wii U systems on sites like Amazon, eBay and Craigslist saw their margins disappear and then chose to return their systems to retailers while their original receipts still permitted them to.

So in the end, there probably still were a minimum of 57,000 units that ended up in consumers' homes in the U.S. this January. But it's nonetheless interesting to examine how these prospectors may affect the retail environment.
...
If the speculative reseller return theory is wrong, however, and 57,000 is really reflective of the total number of new systems sold in January (a five-week retail month), then we could see a mere 46,000 units in February (a four-week retail month), if average weekly January sales are repeated in February.

The NPD Group will report those February estimates in under two weeks. I'll be back then, and we can revisit this question.

That the returns of speculators can affect the numbers so much is absurd to me. The truth shall be revealed in two weeks.

After getting the Wii and seeing and following the sales just to watch every 3rd party miss the boat I don't really give **** about sales anymore. Sales don't tell me jack about what's coming in the future. However, this is a Nintendo console so I don't have to worry,I know that there will always be games I like on it.

Now, if that means that it took 40-50k WiiUs out of the hands of speculators (who wouldn't buy games) and into the hands of people who would buy games, this is good. Sure, the sales are still bad (it basically means they sold 410k WiiUs in December and 100k in January), but that's PS3 launch bad and not historically bad. And an increased attach rate means that developers may be willing to take a few more risks on the WiiU than would be normal (especially by putting games on the eShop and lowering the risk of resale).

Of course, that assumes that only 4k spinners returned 10 WiiUs each. If it's 40-50k people returning WiiUs that were bought for Christmas, people don't see the value in a WiiU. That's a MASSIVE problem for Nintendo, that's going to require heads to roll at NOA.

A lot of people are selling the Wii U Gamepad by itself on eBay for any where between $150.00 to $200.00 and just setting the actual console to the side for a cheaper price. The more units that are sold then the more single Gampads there will be on the market. One might wonder why you would want a second Game when there is no use for it at the moment, but it is good to have one in case the first one breaks.

The Playstation Vita gets a sales week of good news. The ~5000 yen price cut has boosted Vita sales to 62k, and two high profile releases - the lewd and ludicrous Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus: Otome Shoujotachi no Shoumei and the PC-F2P-MMO-port Phantasy Star Online 2: Special Package - make it in to the top 10.

The 3DS has a new Layton game taking second place behind the latest Dynasty Warriors. Also, that Dragon Ball card game takes 4th.

Sales of the Wii U are back in five figures for this week.

Macross 30: Ginga o Tsunagu Utagoe, a within-franchise cross-over game celebrating 30 years of Macross animated series, takes 6th place with 63k uints sold and will likely never see an English localization because Harmony Gold are still jerks.

Macross 30: Ginga o Tsunagu Utagoe, a within-franchise cross-over game celebrating 30 years of Macross animated series, takes 6th place with 63k uints sold and will likely never see an English localization because Harmony Gold are still jerks.
That may not be all HG's fault.  The license rights to Macross in the US are extremely muddy and so nobody wants to attempt to bring any of the games or anime series over here because of that.

Not only is it a mess in the US, it is (or was) also a mess in Japan. It was wrong of me to fully shift the blame on to Harmony Gold. The company hasn't done anything to endear me in recent years. I recall a recent legal scuffle between Harmony Gold and the companies involved with MechWarrior Online over mech designs that caused a past legal scuffle.

Yeah, that is all about Mechwarrior/Battletech licensed some of the Macross Mechs to be part of their continuity.  Well that licensing was to FAFSA.  When FAFSA effectively went away they argued that the licensing was no longer in place.

I'm not so sure it would help much. Looking at Japan's sales, the price cut combined with the first major release for the system in months, and while the results weren't terrible they weren't impressive either. If the system slips back to 10k a week sales, as it might a month or two from now, Sony will be in the same position as before, only now they're making less money than before.

The price cut of the Playstation Vita carries momentum as sales surpass those of the 3DS this week. Hatsune Miku, voice synthesizer software and pizza mascot, takes the top spot this week. Following it is Keiji Inafune's Soul Sacrifice for the Playstation Vita.

LOL.

If Wii U and Xbox 360 kept up this exact rate (obviously it won't), it would take Wii U 1 year, 10 months, 1 week to catch up.

No Wii or Wii U games in the top 20, odd.

How quickly will this temporary boost last?

And its funny seeing the Sony fanboys on GameFAQs react (like one idiot saying the Vita is now slamdunking 3DS, by selling 4% more than it and the first time since the Vita launch to outsell 3DS).
