Microsoft aiming to be home to Indie Games?
« on: October 17, 2005, 11:35:18 AM »
Here's an article I found about an Indie games conference, and where I was surprised to find an enormous Microsoft presence selling the XBox360. It looks like despite Nintendo's retro game distribution system, Microsoft will be the one claiming to control independent and homebrew games with the XBox Live Arcade, of which the announced prices are $5-$20.

Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:

The sad part is Nintendo should be doing this, however, MS
has already beat them to the punchline...

I didn't really expect this, but in hindsight I should have...I don't think Nintendo is really that open to indie gaming, even though many of us would like them to be.  Microsoft, on the other hand, has been working with the open-ended PC format for years, so it's not surprising that the company welcomes indie game developers.

Too bad.

Nintendo should be going after indie developers with GameCube dev kits which can be used to create games that work with the Revolution controller.

Yeah, sorry to say it, but rational realities of the different natures of Nintendo's Business vs. Microsoft's triumphs once again over wishful thinking. Heck, Microsoft was even trying to do this indie game stuff back with the XBox.

I think Nintendo is too concerned with quality assurance and suitable content to fully embrace indie game developers.

isnt the 360 really unfriendly for indie development? or have they drop the requirement of HD in all of thier games? I mean, ms had a radically different aproach to the next gen...

They probably don't require it for the Live Arcade games.

Who was the first company in modern history to let homebrew developers to
make games on a limited basis?

Go look up "Net Yaroze" on Google.

PS - Atari and their bastard children computers/consoles from the 80s don't count.

Increasing resolution is not the problem for indie devs.

I didn't know that about Sony.  Again, it's still less surprising than Nintendo allowing/helping homebrew game devs.  The company is very serious about having control of the content on its systems.  Also, allowing homebrew gaming brings up question, what's to stop a small dev like Orbital Media or WayForward from releasing "homebrew" games instead of fully liscenced ones, thus circumventing Nintendo's liscensing fees?

Nintendo def. needs to start scooping up these little developers before Microsoft catches the new Pokemon.
I agree with whoever said that Microsoft is really taking Nintendo as a threat this round; It looks like they are lining up a defense against the big N with this talk of helping indians

EDIT: err... native americans
I'll shut up now...

Well if those homebrew games are being released through the d/l service then I'm sure that Nintendo will be getting a cut of the sales price for the download.

Ninty has already been working with a bunch of small devs in terms of the DS...

Mitchell - Polarium, (New Puzzle Game)
RED - Detect Hacker
Suzak - Thief Wario
Tose - Starfi

etc, etc...Ninty works with a LOT of small devs, it's just not very noticable...

Besides as far as I know theres a reason for Nintendo enforcing quality content on their consoles, mainly, the crash. Too many crappy games was also one of the reason for it too happen. Its hard to see that for companies like sony or ms, they werent there, the didnt revive a market, but at those times, the video game industry seem unstopable but it collapsed in a really ugly way. Today the game industry is again growing enorumously and seems unstoppable, or is it? ... All  I say is we shouldnt judge Nintendo's desicions so hastly.

It's not noticable because the games aren't crap.  Everyone just assumes they were made by big-time developers because they're good and published by Nintendo.
