Would have been nice if they included Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World, but I'm just being greedy.

My Super NES copy no longer holds saves. I have the necessary tools to replace the battery, but I might use this as an excuse to buy this set.

I'd be happy if we just got YI on the Virtual Console at this point.

You're at least no more greedy than Nintendo, though I'd say Yoshi's Island wouldn't make sense in this compilation since it's a Yoshi game.

Though really, this is a missed opportunity. This should have been New Super Mario All-Stars, which converts the games to the NSMBWii engine allowing them to be played in multiplayer.

Even though the NSMBW engine would help make things easier, they'd still have to remake every single level that's in All-Stars and change them in order to make the levels work with the NSMBW physics.  That would take quite a bit of time that I'm sure Nintendo would rather have the NSMB team spend on a New Super Mario Bros for the 3DS.

There are fans who recreated the games in a couple of months (or less) using unofficial software, and it would take Nintendo even less time than that, so it's pretty easy to do. I also hope Nintendo has something more original planned than New Super Mario Brothers 3DS.

It seems pretty obvious that the best way to show off the 3D capabilities of the 3DS would be with a 3D Mario game designed around the feature. You could do gimmicks with 3D effects in a 2D Mario, but a 3D Mario would have the opportunity for interesting new gameplay mechanics taking advantage of the 3D.

I'd like to see a return of the water gun mechanic. A Sunshine 3DS would be quite interesting.

Would have been nice if they included Yoshi's Island and Super Mario World, but I'm just being greedy.

Since it was always announced to be a port of Super Mario All-Stars, there was always a 0% chance that Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island would be on the disc. It would have been nice to have Super Mario World though since Nintendo did re-release SMAS a few years later and included SMW on it. I am a little disappointed that the soundtrack is just 20 tracks and totals 26 minutes (with some tracks being no longer than 10 seconds).

I will still pick up the disc, especially since it would be nice to be able to play the games without having to hook up my old SNES and SMAS game.

The box art is looking spiffy:

Does anyone know if the game comes in a special colour case? Red or gold would be neat.

No sh*t. I never said there was any chance of either being included. I said it would be nice to have it. And it would. Who wouldn't want 2 more classic Mario games in the same package? Still, that says nothing about the likelihood of it happening. You quoted me and still got that wrong. /facepalm

The Mario Collection will only run in 50Hz.....  Can't belive a retail game from Nintendo wont at least do 60hz.

They do that if it's an emulated game... it's keeping the original frequency of the European version of SMAS.  Doing anything differently would require them to hack the original ROM, and clearly they didn't want to put any effort into this release.

Yes, with the exception of things like TurboGrafx and Japan-only releases that only run in 60Hz.

This came out today in the US.  Unless there's word of a restock/second shipment, get it now if you want it.

Just played through Worlds 1-4 of the original Super Mario Bros.  Let me say, this game looks pretty darn good on my HDTV via component cables.  I mean, it's still SNES graphics, but it's nice.

One bonus - the game displays in the original 4:3 - even though it's set up on widescreen.  Unlike the stupid Virtual Console that stretches things out unless you go in and change the settings every time...

I pre-ordered on Amazon a while back, just before they stopped taking them, which I assume is because they ran out of stock. I almost didn't pre-order because I figure it wouldn't be difficult to find one, but now I'm glad I did, as it ensures I get one without the hassle. Who said you can't buy Christmas presents for yourself?

I didn't see this in this topic, so here's the Iwata Asks article for this game:

http://us.wii.com/iwata_asks/super-mario-all-stars/vol1_page1.jsp

What I find of interest is that the tunes for the soundtrack CD were chosen by the series composer Koji Kondo, which he refers to as his greatest hits. The CD contains 10 tunes and 10 sound effects. For those curious, here is the track listing:

1. Aboveground BGM (Mario 1)
2. Aboveground BGM (Mario 2)
3. Athletic BGM (Mario 3)
4. Aboveground BGM (Super Mario World)
5. Slider (Super Mario 64)
6. Delfino Plaza (Super Mario Sunshine)
7. Aboveground BGM (New Super Mario Bros.)
8. Super Mario Galaxy
9. Title (New Super Mario Bros. Wii)
10. Super Mario Galaxy 2
11. Coin
12. Jump
13. Super Mario transform
14. 1UP
15. Enter a Pipe
16. Hurry
17. Lose a Life
18. Game Over
19. Course Clear
20. Castle Clear
