New Play Control! Wii Game Unboxing

I've been pretty excited about the New Play Control! games coming to Wii. When I heard about the reversible cover arts, I figured a video unboxing was in order!

Why is everything backwards like it's in a mirror?

Cool video. I always wondered what the packages that Nintendo sent review copies in look like. Do all of their games come with free promo items like those Mario socks and Pikmin flowers?

Makes me want to try and start a small and simple site to try and get review games. Hell, Kotaku managed to get free games from publishers even though they are a blog site and never actually review games.

Great vid, but is it just me, or was the video mirrored, as in I read "nimkiP" instead of "Pikmin"?

Yeah, it's mirrored. That's how my web cam films stuff.  I then went in and saved the video out flipped.. but for some reason YouTube reversed it back again. Meh. I'm just going with it.

Wow, you can tear off that shrink wrap a lot faster than I can!

I'm anticipating NWR's review of Mario Power Tennis. What little I've heard about it hasn't been positive, so I'm wondering if there's really something wrong with the game or if there's something more sinister at work here. Getting the perspective of someone who didn't play the original may be beneficial; I myself haven't played the original and so I wonder if it's just that people who had couldn't adjust to the new controls.

I never played the original either (well, I played like 2 minutes of it at a demo in a store), so it would be basically brand new to me. GameStop wants like $35 for a used GameCube copy, so the Wii version would actually be cheaper. I loved the original Pikmin and may pick it up.

I have a question for the staff. For shoveware (like the "Imagine" series from Ubisoft), do they send you the copies hoping you will review them? Do you feel obligated to review games you get sent by publishers even though you know they will be bad, and have you ever had publishers contact you about a bad review? I think everyone remembers the situation with GameSpot and Eidos Interactive over the "Kane & Lynch: Dead Men" review.

I think the source material is still flipped and mac only knows not to flipped.

Anyway ----EDIT----AUTO FLIP NEW PHOTOS

and new stuff will now be fine.

I'm very interested in Pikmin I loved those games.

I too want to know what everyone thinks of Mario Power Tennis. Reviews have been mixed. The gaming media seems to hate it, but importers have detailed how the controls work and they don't seem as bad.

Pikmin, on the other hand, has been receiving great reviews.

Haha, love the Mario socks! I actually have the Mario wristbands.  Also, please do let us know about the flowers. I want to see how they bloom.

Ahaha, I thought this was a new Wii Play game called "Unboxing," where (I could only assume) the gameplay consisted of you healing an injured boxer using Motion Controls™.

I'm a big fan of Mario Tennis (N64) but never really liked Mario Power Tennis (GC).  They'd have to change a lot more than the controls to get me to buy it.

I was very much the same way for a while, and then I started to realize that the only part I really despised were those stupid Power Shots. They just gave the computer a crutch to return some of your best shots and as a result extended matches to ridiculous lengths.

However, given the ability to turn the nonsense off in the non-tournament mode (where I spent the most time playing with friends anyway) I found myself enjoying the game much more. It felt pretty much on par with the 64 version, though both definitely have their own feel.

I'm curious to see if the motion control actually makes the game anymore fun. It always seemed like a game that was too fast paced to effectively feature such controls.

But anyway, I liked the video, and from the quick glimpse I got of both the disc arts, it looks like Nintendo reused those in addition to the reverse-side box art, which I found interesting.

NWR reviews every game that it gets (eventually).  That's site policy, and professional courtesy to whoever would care enough to send us a game.  And while it happens rarely, publishers have contacted us about "bad" reviews, but we don't change a review score once it's posted.  We'll change factual errors or add information afterwards, but never change the score.  We'll do a second review if necessary.

I don't know what happened but I believe both the Nintendo 64's Mario Golf and Mario Tennis are better games then their sequels on the more powerful systems.

It makes no sense, but they just got the games right the first time, and the changes or improves they tried to implement just made it worse.

My initial impressions are a little mixed.

Shot types (with the exception of super shots) are totally controlled using motions.  This even includes shot direction (much like Wii Tennis).  The result initially is a much less precise experience obviously.  I'll see if that changes as I get more practice.

Overall though I feel like more (dare I say) casual people will enjoy this game and I plan to use my fiancee as a test of this theory.  She hated Mario Tennis for the n64 (the last one I played) because the difference between an experienced player and her was so great, and she didn't want to spend the time to become experienced.  She loved Wii Sports Tennis though.  My guess is she'll enjoy this Power Tennis port more than the n64 tennis.

The burning question will be this though... will she enjoy it more than Wii Sports Tennis?

i dont know what it is with video reviews and whatnot but the personality rating is a deep deep 1 on a scale of 5.  lets get animated and work on the singular tone of your voice.

It sounds like you just woke up, threw on a hat and filmed.

Other than that, the share was great thanks!

Woah, BwrJim going for the jugular.

I, like Spak, was too busy swooning to Pale's voice to notice if he was boring. Although his voice has got nothing on S_B's. I want S_B to sing me lullabies.

Where is S_B anyways? Haven't seen him in awhile.

Pale, what program do you use for editing? You could tighten things up a lot if you just like do a little FastForward in the slow, no-dialog parts (like unwrapping ;) ). I think most programs have a fast/slow/reverse setting you can adjust.

In doing my videos on YouTube, I've found that the tighter you edit, the better the video will be. I know you probably didn't want to spend a lot of time on this, but it's actually pretty quick to do just a little nip here and a little tuck there.

See you made a bad assumption there decoyman... that being that I actually edited it. =P

I pushed record. Talked at my screen. Thought I pushed the flip button. Then uploaded to YouTube. =P

I'm totally not happy with the light in that room either... if I do start doing this more I'll probably take some steps to make everything look nicer.  Hell, my digital camera may take better video than my webcam, so I may use that next time.

Also, I'm planning on picking up a Nikon d90 over the next few months, which probably does even better video yet.
