The only issue is that games with multiple versions/skus hog up the top of the top of the charts. Not that big of a deal.

Us fanatics can just add up the numbers later from the different versions. Or the publisher will brag that X brand has sold Y many copies of games between all the versions.

It would be like counting the sales of the individual skus for Xbox360 or PS3 separately because they have different colors, sizes or prices. It is the exact same system with different version.
Not really comparable because it's hardware not software and people don't buy multiple versions of the same system.

It doesn't matter how similar they are, they're separate releases so they should either be tracked separately or put into their own category of a game with multiple versions.

Yes they do.  I have two DSs. One Red Phatty-type and one Red and Black Lite type.  It isn't beyond the realm of possibility for people to have bought, say a collectors edition version of the 360 with HDMI as well as a launch console too.

And that's why the sales of the DS, DS Lite, and DSi are tracked separately. But those are hardware revisions which is a bit different. Nobody is going to buy an XBox 360 Pro and Core system. Besides, what you say supports my claim that all game releases should be tracked separately; it doesn't matter how slight the differences are, some people will buy both.

My point is that even though things like that get tracked separately, to see what versions sells most, in the end they should all be counted together.

When we look back at how things have sold over the years, the releases are grouped by the unit
e.g. Pokemon Red/Blue, Pokemon Gold/Silver, Nintendogs(all 3), Xbox360(Arcade, Pro & Elite), NDS(phat & Lite)

When I look at a Pokemon release, I know it has multiple versons of the same game. Gold has 4 exclusive pokemon and an exclusive dojo, Silver has 4 exclusive pokemon & an exclusive dojo, but other than those swappable items, the game is exactly the same. I've never played any of the pokemon, but this is what I've been led to believe over the years. If that is true, and there are no differentiating game mecahnics between the two versions, then I don't see why they shouldn't just be tracked as Pokemon Gold/Silver in the grander scheme of things. The only reason you would need to see them tracked separately is if you worked at the manufacturer and needed to plan for restocking.

When we look back the only thing that matters is that we know that Pokemon G/S sold XXmillions, Xbox360 sold XXmillions, Nintendogs sold XX millions & DS sold XXXmillions.

But I'm not sure why we're even discussing this since Pokemon is tracked separately, Nintendogs is tracked separately and every other game with multiple versions is all tracked separately while they are selling.

But when two games are placed on a best-seller list as the same unit, it isn't accurate or fair. A single game didn't sell that amount, it was two games, and the number wouldn't be that high if it were just one game. That's the point I'm trying to make here, which means it doesn't matter what the content of a game is. If it's a separate release it should get counted separately.

But it is only one game. A single game with two versions. That is how it is mentioned on the Best Sellers list.
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl

It tells you there are 2 versions of the same game being counted together.
There is no deception. Whether you want to accept it or not Pokemon Diamond & Pearl are two versions of the SAME GAME. Pokemon Gold & Silver are two version of the same game. Pokemon Red & Blue are two versions of the same game. Wii White & Wii Black are two versions of the same system. DS Phat & DSLite are two version of the same system. PS3 bloat & PS3 slim are 2 versions of the same system.

They may all be tracked separately but they are still being counted together.
So I'm not really sure what is unfair or not accurate.

They're put on the same list as games with only one version and are counted as being a better seller when really that's not true. They should either be on such lists as separate games or excluded all-together.

Chart-Track has told GamesIndustry.biz that sales of the PlayStation 3 have rocketed 999 per cent over the past week.
Quote
Sony introduced the new, slimmer SKU last Tuesday, and although Chart-Track does not reveal actual sales numbers, Dorian Bloch, director of the firm called the growth "a huge increase".

"The uplift on week 36 on week 35 is plus 999 per cent," revealed Bloch. "We don't give out the hardware numbers, but never-the-less it's a very large increase."

http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/playstation-3-sales-rocket-1000-percent-on-slim-release

ChartTrack has told MCV that it is not releasing specific sales numbers, but did say:
Quote
“The sales increase is very impressive, making the PS3 the top selling hardware in Week 36. The Xbox 360, Wii and DS Lite all sold around the same amount last week – PS3 Slim outsold each of them by a ratio of three-to-one.â€

The sales-tracking firm added that it’s unsure how long the uplift will continue for.
“The longevity of this uplift very much depends on the time of year. The PS2 Slim was released in November, much closer to Christmas. We’ll have to wait and see how things work out for Sony this time.â€

http://www.mcvuk.com/news/35676/UK-PS3-sales-up-999

Also software sales went up:
Quote
The greatest benficiary is the 2007 title Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, which saw a massive 128 per cent rise in sales.

Also according to Famitsu PS3slim has sold 150k for the 1st week(4 days) on sale in Japan.

Stupidest quote ever (Ok, there's an awful lot of competition)?

People essentially stopped buying ps3s altogether before the slim release, so this increase is as expected.

Indeed, I'd say it's slightly pathetic that it only outsold its competitors 3:1, as those ps3 sales represented pent-up demand from people who have been waiting for a new model or lower price!  The real test will be how well it does over time given the new price.

I agree that 3:1 is dire news for Sony.  If the numbers are anything like we've seen from Japan in the past weeks then the PS3 has had essentially zero sales in the past two weeks (below PS2 even) so outselling the DS 3:1 this week would mean that if you average the last three weeks then the PS3 is only on par with the other consoles.  It doesn't help them make up all the lost ground they've got to cover.

Maybe the LCD shutter glasses they're demonstrating for HD 3D gaming will help?

But you need a 120hz TV to even take advantage of the 3D effect. Which means anyone that bought a TV before early this year probably didn't even have the option to accidentally buy one. Once again Sony would be only catering to the very TOP of the market base. Not usually a winning strategy...... as they already know from $599 US DOLLARS.

120hzTVs have been around since last year, maybe even before that. I don't think you need a 120hz TV for the non-glasses 3D effect, at least not with DLPs. Also, 120hz ruins everything it touches, aside from say Unreal Tournament.

I've yet to see one of those new 3-D movies. How good is the 3-D effect in them? Wouldn't head tracking be an easier way to create good 3-D effects? We're already talking about goggle/headband accessories so it's not that far fetched to throw that trick back into the equation.
