Separately, Nintendo announced sales for its own hardware and software. The company has now sold 425,000 Wii U units in the US (up from 400,000), falling short of the original Wii's first-week total of 475,000. New Super Mario Bros. U sold in excess of 243,000 units during the month, and was attached at nearly 60 percent of all Wii U sales.

The Nintendo 3DS sold nearly 540,000 units during the month, bringing its total to close to 6.5 million units life-to-date in the US. Mario Kart 7 also reached a milestone during November, becoming the second 3DS game to cross 2 million units sold in the US.

As for the aging original Wii, that system sold 420,000 units during the month, bringing its total US sales figure to over 40 million. The original Nintendo DS sold 370,000 systems in November, with Nintendo expecting the hardware line to cross 53 million life-to-date unit sales in the "next few days."

So the guy at Neo Gaf with NPD numbers said these are the Wii U's top 15 sellers.  Yeah I shamlessly copied and pasted what he said but it's easy to tell what each is.

1. Mario
1. ZombiU
3. Scribblenaus
4. cod
5. jd4
6. nland
7. mickey
8. batman
9. sonic
10. skylanders
11.  ac3
12. sing
13. nfl13
14. espn
15. ng3

One thing to remember is the NPD didn't count the Nintendo Land sales with the Deluxe models so only the standalone version is Number 6.  The same guy says the Deluxe model made up 75% of Wii U sales.  So if you combine the Deluxe models with the standalone sales, Nintendo Land would technically be the overall best selling game.

Probably because the Wii U version of Assassin's Creed is the exact same as the PS3/360 version while Arkham City has some new content.  Plus Batman is more family friendly then Assassin's Creed so that would make it more appealing to the family audience that generally makes up more of Nintendo's userbase.

I think that's a pretty good number for Wii U, all things considered. There were some crazy deals for both PS360, so the Wii U was by far the most expensive system on the market in November.

While I understand your underlying point, I'd be concerned if the lower prices on rival systems really stole significant sales from the Wii U. That would imply, in my opinion, that the public generally sees the Wii U as being akin to the six and seven year old systems, or at the least that it's an unnecessary upgrade over those systems.

In Novembers? In 2006 it sold 916k, which (if it's a four-week month) averages out to slightly over 200k per the NPD. In 2007 that number improved to 1.53 million, held about steady in 2008, and increased yet again in 2009 to 1.7 million. That proved to be the high water mark, as it went down to 1.5 million in 2010, and then crashed last year.

Basically, the 3DS' performance, while not terrible, isn't great either.

No, for two reasons. First, the PS3's actual costs ($599/$499) were simply too high in absolute terms. Second, the 360's tech leap was about as high, and that system was a mere year old.

Though the PS3 sticker price may be high, I still think people saw a huge value difference between $300 with no games or $350 with one game versus $200 with five games or $200 with Kinect and however many games. There are certainly many reasons the Wii U isn't a sell-out, including how its merits aren't as easily apparent as the Wii was, but price was definitely a large factor. The price difference won't be that great after the holidays, so I don't think it's anything to worry about.

Once more positive word of mouth gets out, I think it'll continue to drive Wii U sales as people realise what it has to offer.

I'm not sure that you're wrong about that. What I'm saying though is that, if that is correct, then the Wii U might have a long-term perception problem. Paying more for a "better product" is a pretty natural course of action. If people think paying the extra bucks is an issue, then might that not imply that they see the Wii U as being roughly on-par with the 360/PS3?

I'm not expressing myself very clearly here, but couldn't it be that for someone to prefer to pay $250 for an old system with five games instead of $350 for a new system and one game is that they may see the two systems as being roughly equivalent, so that the "cheaper and with more games" part trumps the "newer and with the promise of better future games"?

I do recognise it's a possibility yes, I don't think it's what's happening but it's too early to tell exactly what the reasons are.

For your first point, the Wii sold better than the PS360 even though it wasn't as good from a tech standpoint. That's one reason why I think lower prices attract more buyers than higher prices, and tech doesn't matter much. It also brings me to your second point.

In this economy, I think there are less people who buy things based on potential. There are still some early adapters who buy things up because they are new and could be something great in the future, I think these are the people who are buying Wii U right now. But the Wii U doesn't have a killer app. It has nothing like Wii Sports or Super Mario Bros or Final Fantasy VII, a game that makes everyone rush out and buy the system now and willing to pay the price. Its biggest launch title is New Super Mario Bros U, a game which doesn't really use the Gamepad creatively, and the novelty of 2D Mario has worn off after four games, one being released a few months prior. Nintendo Land may be great, but I don't think it's as easily understood as Wii Sports.

I've always believed that games sell systems regardless of price (unless it's something outrageous like $600), and so I think Wii U will have no trouble selling once the big games hit. This is simply my view on things, there are a lot of variables to consider and so I know there are a lot of possibilities.

The Wii U's launch sales in North America while less then the Wii's, were still higher then the 360/PS3 launch sales were.

So it's kind of pointless to compare the Wii U's launch sales to what the other systems are currently doing when console launches are always a different beast.  The 360 at launch was still outsold by the PS2 in 2005, and yet a year later the 360 easily outsold the PS2's successor the PS3 in holiday 2006.

Right now the Wii U is doing good for a launch console and that's all we can really talk about.

Actually the 3DS version has online as well.  One of the selling points has even been that the Wii U players can play online with 3DS players so there's no split in the online fanbase.  The Wii U version is the exact same game as the 3DS version except it's been upscaled for HD on the Wii U.  So that shows just how strong the Monster Hunter series currently is in Japan when an upscaled port of a year old game can easily sell over 100k at the launch of a new system.
