Staff Sez Special Edition: Valentine's Day
« on: February 14, 2014, 03:59:41 PM »

It's time to boot up those old systems and show them you care.

Have you ever truly loved? Maybe it was your first, maybe you've found them recently, or maybe you're still looking for that game you can play over and over again. Some of the staff here has found their loves and have written some beautiful prose for them. Let's take a romantic stroll down memory lane, shall we?

Zach "Legend of Love" Miller

Dearest The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX (Game Boy Color),

Long has our love affair blossomed in portable settings. I recall many a sleepless night spent in camping tents, long past sundown, caressing your chariot's smooth curves and plastic frame, eager to find all of your well-hidden photographic secrets. I spent hours longing for your Wind Fishy embrace, frantic to pass the time between grocery stores and malls knowing, deep down, that I just wanted to be with you, plumbing labyrinthine dungeons in search of that joyful music we made together. Ours was not some one-night stand, but a romance rekindled year after year, revisiting the place we first met--Koholint Island--and bedding down, only to wake up the next morning on a fresh hunt for lost swords and shields.

And though your physical body died long ago, the digital age has brought us even closer together, for your are never but a screen-tap away. I couldn't live without you. My Heart Container aches when we're apart, and Malon sings when we're together. This Valentine's Day, let's meet again on this long trading sequence we call LIFE. XOXO

Carmine "16 Bit Shakespeare" Red

A Sonnet to Super Mario Bros. (NES)

Shall I compare thee to a modern game?
Thou art more simple, and yet, more complex.
Rough trends do shake some darling gimmicks lame,
Best graphic's spark falls fast from its apex.

Sometime too hot the eye of bloggers shines,
and often does their rosy praise subside.
And top ten games on lists have their declines,
Old tech made "obsolete" is harsh bromide.

But thy eternal gameplay shall not fade,
Nor lose that magic spirit that thou ow'st,
Nor sequels smother you within their shade,
When in eternal lines to time though grow'st.

So long as gamers play, and hearts can glow,
So long will all love playing Mario.

Daan "Paper Heart" Koopman

When I boot you up, you bring me in a happy mood.
No, it is not about shooting or being a crazy dude.
When I enter file select it simply becomes absurd,
I hear like the best music I ever heard.
The rocking guitars and uplifting beats make it already feel grand.
But when you starting playing it, you really start to understand.

The fun characters and vibrant worlds make it all right,
And you even have not begun to fight.
From fighting with fuzzies to duking with the shadow,
The danger never becomes way too mellow.
The stage is set and ready to go,
Let this plumber give it all and start the show.

Exploring the worlds is your main goal,
And the conclusion will make the world feel whole.
Meeting new friends and collecting Crystal Stars is where it counts,
With funny situations happening in great amounts.
Destroy the X-Nauts with all your might,
And perhaps be victorious in this everlasting fight.

Let the cartoony attitude not make you shy,
Because it is the creativity that makes this all fly.
It is a love for a game I never felt before,
And it made the RPG genre that I adore.
However don't go and expect too much of a chore,
Mainly because it is Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door.

I like these games and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a game comes in with an itty bitty waist
And a round thing in your face
You get sprung, wanna pull out your tough
'Cause you notice that game was stuffed with content.
Whoever said, "Cheaters never win" must've never met Khushrenada.

God I love that game!

Carmine Red, Associate Editor

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

The Thousand Year Door is MY LOVE, Daan! But I can always respect good taste.
I am a toxic person engaging in toxic behavior.
