REV the most anticipated next-gen system in Japan?!?
« on: May 29, 2005, 10:31:05 PM »
According to the Magic Box Weekly Famitsu had a survey asking readers which next-gen system they were most interesed in, and oddly enough the REV came out on top with 42.2%,  followed by the PS3 at 39.9%, and ending with the 360 with 18%.

Thats good news to hear, given that there is very little known bout the Rev to begin with.  Its good to see that not everyone in japan has jumped onto the graphics bandwagon lol.

Personally, I knew this was going to happen.

Ever since last E3 where Nintendo first discussed the revolution, I knew it was going to be a hit. Now with Square complimenting Nintendo's views about online and complete backwards compatibility, I expect to hear good things.

Well I'm glad you can say that, as I'm honestly surprised by this report considering the amount of information that is out there on each of the systems. Pleasantly surprised, of course, though. Anyone know how big the sample was?

I am guessing the sample wasn't amazingly big, and keep in mind that this was famitsu's readers, fellow informed gamers, and as such should not be taken as the absolute. I still think this is quite the win for Nintendo and do not wish to diminish their achievement.

Again, go Nintendo!

Heh... apparently one of the reasons they chose the Rev was because it's still shrouded in mystery.

I haven't seen anything for any upcoming console (Rev included) that actually makes me feel "excited" about them (except seeing Hitomi dancing naked in front of her window to promote the Xbox2). Just hearing "billions of poly" "blah blah gflops" "It's a supercomputer!" It does nothing for me. I've heard it all before. "Internet" also doesn't do much for me. Sure, the "downloadable games" thing from Nintendo seems like it has a lot of promise, but I'll hold off on any judgements about it until we hear more about the games.

But Nintendo's console has mystery. It has a secret or two. That is catching my interest, despite Nintendo's lack of system-performance hype.

Although it's still a bit strange to see these results. Polls like this almost never have anything to do with the upcoming systems, and have almost everything to do with the current layout of fanboys on the current systems.

Maybe they're beginning to regain their appeal to the Japanese gamer, but is 2.2% on Sony that really that good considering Microsoft is fairly un-loved over there?
Can't that simply mean more Nintendo fans read it than Sony fans?

True, but I take it as more of Sony losing fans seeing as they have the largest user base anywhere. I also see the 360's 18% as a huge leap for MS. Like many people have said before me, the next-gen console war is Sony's to lose.

With three new consoles coming out over a period of 8 months to a year, many see it as a three way decision.  I see a lot of people who grew up on nintendo coming back to nintendo for the revolution.  I also see it appealing to people who like video games, but for whom video games are no longer the main focus in their lives.

I'm surprised that the xbox 1.5 got even 18%

"the next-gen console war is Sony's to lose."

Sony already lost it, the only thing that sold ps2 in japan (beside ff) was the Matix on dvd only and that not going to happen again with blueray. Japan like small, ceapy, and sill powerful game system and nintedo got it. The only place in the world that people like big, high cost game system is the u.s. the rest of the world dosen't. Sony and MS and both are going to lose

The Xbox 360 figure makes me question the accuracy of this poll. 18%?! What'd they have last generation, 1-2%? Unless everybody's becoming very disillusioned with Sony in Japan this whole thing sounds a little farfetched.

Well, I do believe that the XBox numbers must be false considering that it has quit litterally been dead in japan for some time.  one can only hope that those mistwalker games turn out to be c rap.

I'm wondering if Sony is perhaps being too American focused with the PS3.  It's clear they see MS as their main competitor and a lot of the PS3's design seems to be to counter the Xbox 360.  Since the Xbox is a non-factor in Japan, Japanese gamers might not be as impressed in the PS3.  Really, why should they care at all about anything Sony does specifically to counter MS?  Nintendo however quite obviously is still focusing a lot on the Japanese market.  If Sony focuses too much on North America they might accidently allow Nintendo to gain more ground in Japan.

I'm still pretty surprised that the Rev would be most anticipated since we just don't know much about it.

Im surprised! This is even more surprising after I saw another poll of famitsu about the most anticipated games and Zelda was in a not so great 8th or 9th position, while as expected FF12 was the number 1, that made me thought that Nintendo had lost ground in Japan because they arent really into RPGs, but Im glad I was wrong.

You know thats pretty interesting, and I hope its true, this may be Nintendo's big chance to get back on top.

On another related topic I was talking to a friend about the latest E3 episode of Filter on G4, and the REV came out in 2nd he told me, and the PS3 in frist while the 360 some where down the list. But I was surprised the REV was anywhere past 6th. Maybe its mystery packed in with all of what we really know that has people really excited, I know I am.

Rounding, if that wasn't a joke >_>  It's off by one thenth, rounding to the tenths place is enough to do that

ANYWAY, the most surprising part is the how well the Xbox did.  I would have guessed it would have gotten around 5-7%

At first I was surprised about the 360 gaining so much appeal, but it makes sense when you think about it. Nintendo has only released a little information about the Rev, and Sony has outright lied about what their console can do. I've talked before about MS gaining ground in Japan the next generation. I don't really think it's going to happen, it's more like a horror senario which plays directly on my fears than anything else. Still, this is hardly reassuring. I feel that I've witnessed the enlarged shadow of a cockroach against the wall at night after watching Alien for the fourth time in a row.

This was quoted by Magic Box. The Magic Box. Who are awesome. It's not unreasonable to expect that they would round the numbers up from 42.15 and 39.85 to 42.2 and 39.9. Or just make them up.

I think Nintendo aiming to recapture the japanese market is the best decision for them.  Its only logical they would do so.  They've lost ground in their home land and over here in the US.  Of course they would first try and reclaim their teritory before they come over here and try to win us over.  Picture it as gang warfare lol,  Nintendo wants to take back their turf before they come over here and try to reclaim its mark.  Anyways, Nintendo's style is more appreciated over in Japan.  Animal Crossing and cell shaded Zelda do not get frowned upon over there as it is over here.
