« on: August 11, 2010, 09:28:27 PM »

Games on display to the public at the German trade fair next week revealed.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/23858

Gamescom, taking place in Cologne, Germany will be held from 18 - 22 August. Nintendo are making no new announcements, and the games that will be playable at Nintendo's booth are a subset of those that were displayed at E3. This time the event is open to the public, and it will be the first time many of these games have been playable outside of press events.

Charles Martinet, voice of Mario, will be at the show, where a display of every Mario game released for Wii and Nintendo DS will be playable for visitors.

The list of upcoming games on the show floor is as follows:

Art Academy: Learn Painting and Drawing Techniques with Step-by-Step Training (Nintendo DS)
Metroid: Other M (Wii)
Tetris Party Deluxe (Wii & Nintendo DS)
Wii Party (Wii)
Professor Layton and the Lost Future (Nintendo DS)
Donkey Kong Country Returns (Wii)
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn (Nintendo DS)
Kirby’s Epic Yarn (Wii)
Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Miniland Mayhem (Nintendo DS)
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii)

Charles gets a trip to Germany? I wonder if he'll like it. Has he done these sorts of things before for Nintendo? I mean, not just USA promotions but international ones as well.

Yeah, he's even spoken Spanish at the Latin American events.

Nice.

I hope there are some updated builds or new stuff being shown for the games that will be at Gamescom. I want to see and hear more about Kirby's Epic Yarn and DKCR.

Gamescom is just a minor convention really (in terms of game conventions), I highly doubt any of Nintendo's demos will be different than their E3 ones, especially since only two months will have passed by.

I wouldn't really call it minor; it's probably the third-biggest, after E3 and TGS. It's become pretty significant over the years.

Since they're open to the public, in people terms, Gamescom is much larger than TGS, which is itself far, far larger than than E3.  Not so much in announcement terms, of course.

Yeah, I knew that (actually, I didn't realize Gamescom had higher attendance than TGS, but I knew they were both much bigger in that regard than E3), I was more talking about announcements, and the general sense of how seriously the game companies take it.

Um, GamesCom was first held last year. I think you are mixing it up with the Leipzig Games Convention, but they are not the same. GamesCom was created to replace the Games Convention due to that expo ending after the 2008 show.

When I said minor, I was talking about it's importance to the industry rather than how many people attend it.

It never occurred to me before, but do Nintendo's localizations include translating Mario's few intelligible lines into other languages?  I'd be really curious to hear "Thank you-a so much-a for to playing-a my game-a" in Spanish or German.

Mario's voice is in English even in the Japanese copies of the game, so I would bet it is kept in English in other languages too (along with the other characters he voices, like Luigi).

I know this is not related but will/do Nintendo make announcements about what they're showing at the Eurogamer Expo? Did they do this last year?

Nintendo never translates voice acting (outside of the curious case of Doshin the Giant).

Sorta, they do translate non-major characters in the Mario games (although usually between Japanese and English).

I meant NoE. Of course Japanese gets translated to English but English never to anything else.

I think we all know why, it would cost too much money and too much time to translate it into German/Spanish/French/whatever other languages exist in countries they publish in use.

Of course every other major publisher does it anyway, even for niche games like Klonoa.

Whether these demos will be different from E3 is variable. Level by level experiences like Kirby and Donkey Kong would be easier to construct a demo from, so they are more likely to get new demo treatment. Skyward sword, on the other hand... I'm not sure if Nintendo wants to show us any more of that game so soon after E3.
