Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 590: Hardware Sales, Viewed from Above

Prototype was the spiritual successor to Hulk Ultimate Destruction, reusing most of the game mechanics though I assume Hulk did not absorb people and take their appearance to sneak into places.

Speaking of off-brand superheroes, Megaton Rainfall is a game not about Nintendo hype movements but being essentially Superman and having to defeat aliens without inflicting too many casualties on the population. It's VR-optional but overall it's just not that much fun to fly above a destructible city and only shooting at the alien ships. Neat tech demo for procedural generation though, you can fly to any point on Earth and it generates cities and stuff (also other planets but those don't have cities).

Everything about Daemon X Machina makes it look like Armored Core 5 to me, including coop battles against giant bosses. Though at least it doesn't seem to have that stategic metagame thingy that didn't really work too well in 5.

I don't know what Mr. Game & Watch game I'd make but I know I'd tastelessly advertise it with #blacklivesmatter :P

I'm so used to Mega Man games being very hard that it surprises me more when they're beatable. My first Mega Man was Dr. Wily's Revenge on the Game Boy which was insanely hard.

Wait, wasn't Dimensions de-listed from the XBox store? So they got the rights back together or something?

I think box art is still very important, it's just the art for the image boxes in the digital stores. With the big flood of digital releases on all platforms it's important for a game to look appealing in the big listing so people actually click on it to see the game's actual sales pitch.

Oh and count me as another victim of that Game Boy Yoshi game (called Mario & Yoshi here).

Yeah, the game advertises itself as hard so I was immediately wary. I don't trust games that treat "hard" as a selling point.

Interesting, I read rumors of a terrible port. Not too sure about the price, after all they've been selling this at deep discounts on the PC already...

While Metacritic has a policy not to change review scores they do remove plagiarized reviews.

I really don't think Jon is doing a good job of explaining Dead Cells... It's pretty close to non-stop combat, very little dedicated exploration and backtracking is reduced to seconds because the teleporters are pretty much at every branching point and dead end of the map. You usually don't spend more than a few seconds going through areas you've already slaughtered your way through.

Honestly I don't think it even has much to do with Metroid at all. You do unlock powers that let you reach new areas but it's not like A Robot Named Fight where you go back through the map to where you need to use them, those powers are mostly for your following runs and enable you to reach alternate stages or access new secret rooms. You keep going forward, on your next run that forward just includes branching paths where you can use those new powers.

I think the Zero series introduces the idea that these animal shapes and names aren't their given names but they start out more human-like and transform into these animal shapes when they're "on duty". But the plot is so wacko loopy at that point that these might be something entirely different from the mavericks of the X series.

So with Gui on vacation someone else will have to play Slaps & Beans then.

Choosing Kirby as the form of Goza the Destroyer? Are you out of your minds? That's an all-devouring cosmic horror that gets away with murdering hundreds just for a slice of cake by being pink

The reason you fall so fast off the Gutsman platforms in MM1 is that they forgot to reset your vertical velocity when standing on a sprite platform like that or the magnet beam, your velocity increases constantly like you are falling so the moment you don't have the platform under you you rocket downward. Speedrunners love that but everybody else...

How many of them are now screaming at Sony to release their accounts? (if you missed it: playing on the PS4 locks your Epic account and its purchases irrevocably to Sony and prevents you from using it on any other console)

Design and movement wise that looked a lot like Armored Core.

Was Money Puzzle Exchanger available in the West before?

Of course murder mysteries belong in Touch Generations, what's more popular among old ladies than whodunnits?

Looking forward to Smash Royale, the gacha based Clash Royale clone with Smash Bros styling.

BTW, when killing FZero or Star Fox remember their impact on the SNES. Star Fox was Argonaut's big hit that resulted in the design of the Super FX chip that affected loads of later SNES games including Yoshi's Island. Dunno if erasing FZero would impact Mario Kart.

Stacked attack speed upgrades, triple shot and usually some big, piercing or fragmenting shots can turn the whole screen into a wave of death that crushes everything in your path. It's certainly gotten rarer since the introduction of bullet speed upgrades (which are apparently meant as dud upgrades to dilute the pool a bit) but sometimes you do end up with a combination that makes the screen look like Bangai-O.

If Atelier is relaxed I guess they dropped that time limit stuff? The ones I played (PS3 era) had strict time limits that meant you couldn't goof around or just try things, you had to focus on getting specific objectives done.

On the C64 I had a first person shooter with shaded polygons that ran at like 2 FPS. But that's the C64, games were just **** by default.

Hollow sounds overall like a Jim Sterling tier of game.

Some description of Ace of Seafood mentions that the ships are toys which is supposed to explain the scale. I don't think it's an asset flip, just a game from Japan.

Yeah, the bots got a lot more useful since the version that got ported. On the PC you get buffs for using bots, they can carry loot (though slowly), they no longer get stunlocked by turrets, they can be equipped with different weapons and abilities and you can order them to hold a position. It's ludicrous that they didn't include that stuff on the Switch.

Also remember that Bonsai Barber is one of these "you've done your work for today, come back tomorrow" games that uses the real time clock. So if you want the proper experience you better start playing it NOW to get a few days into the progression..

Guillaume didn't get to the part of Mercenary Kings that invites the Monster Hunter comparisons, most missions consist of hunting or capturing giant bosses (usually mechs, tanks and such) and making new guns out of their parts.
