TalkBack / Re: Wii U Demo Stations Coming Your Way Soon
« on: October 15, 2012, 08:40:51 AM »
I doubt we'll get any at my Gamestop, since the damn place is already cluttered to the brim with Android tablets, Wii, Xbox, PS3, and Vita displays and a bunch of bargain Xbox and PS2 games. Maybe they'll get rid of their Wii display?

Considering I'll be in Tacoma this weekend, I'll probably see if the Best Buy there has it on display.

One of my buddies who works there says they are indeed taking down the Wii displays.  He even got to keep the TV mounted to it.  They just have to return the Wii System to nintendo.

Also, if you're buying a GBA game on ebay, caveat emptor.  ebay is very well known for selling fake chinese knock-offs of gba games that don't always work well, if at all.  Make sure you see the actual card theyre selling you and not a stock image.  If they do show the actual card, compare it to other pictures on google and make sure it looks authentic.  Faded colors, logos in the wrong place, etc are all good indicators of a fake copy.

Awesome, someone on the show finally gave Dark Souls a shot!

James, if you aren't completely opposed to the idea I would recommend checking out a wiki for the game just to learn the basics of the game's systems, it will make the initial learning curve much more manageable since the game isn't great about telling you how some of the systems work. Regarding the bloodstain mechanic, there is only one bloodstain that can be recovered at any given time --- the one from your previous death. If you die again on your way back to it a new bloodstain will appear at that location with the number of souls you had upon dying. All of the souls stored in the previous bloodstain will be lost forever.

I must admit, I'm a little surprised that you talked so much about the game "trolling" you, to me the difficulty is very similar to something like the original Legend of Zelda. In that game there are countless areas you can access from the very beginning that will completely destroy you in no time but you quickly learn to avoid those areas and come back to them at a later point. That is the same mindset you need for Dark Souls. It seems like you figured that out already but I'm surprised you saw it as the game trolling, I actually appreciate that sort of throwback in game design because it respects the intelligence of the player instead of constantly spoon-feeding everything to you.

Jonny, you should totally try this game out sometime! The game has such an unfair reputation, don't let that put you off from it, if you're willing to tackle the initial learning curve you will eventually find a gaming experience that is more rewarding than just about any you've ever had (at least, that was the case for me). I know what it feels like to have real world responsibilities and limited free time but this game really isn't as harsh as something like a rougelike.

Anyway, great show and I hope to hear more wonderful stories of James tackling the many challenges of Dark Souls in the near future.

Couldn't agree more!  I'm so happy they're trying it.  The game is insanely rewarding and great, and is basically the closest thing to a modern symphony of the night/Super metroid we have.  Big open world full of shortcuts and hidden passages with extremely rewarding gameplay.  The difficulty rumors and high learning curve turn people away, but once you figure the basics out, you'll feel like a kid again.

I think I will wait for nintendo to do a sale on this before I pick it up.  Or maybe skip straight to the second one.

Holiday 2013.  It might be ready before that, but Nintendo will release holiday 2013.  The first one wasnt a holiday title, but if I recall, the DS and Wii one were both holiday titles.  Unless nintendo has some megaton game for next holiday, I see this being released then.

glad to hear!

This (and layton) are my two most anticipated titles this fall.  Makes me happy that this game will be as good as it looks.

I'd give Reggie a "my body is ready" high five if they brought this game to NA on the Wii U

Yeah, we definitely wont get the Wii one.  If we get it for Wii U, why not as a download-only version?  It'd be more risk-free, I think.  Don't have to print copies that may or may not sell.

Jonny, please tell me you have played/like dark souls?  If you enjoyed la mulana, please give Dark souls a try.  And, like la mulana, I'd recommend watching some youtube videos on how to play since it doesnt teach you how to play.  Personally, I like figuring out things via trial and error, but if you don't, the resources are out there.

You should do this for every eshop game.  I like to know what I get in the final package before buying games, you know?  I hate those one page manuals you sometimes get with games, so it's nice to know this one has a digital one.

Someone tell me Denpa Men is worth it. That $10 price tag is a bit steep, but i did enjoy the demo.

Yeah I enjoyed the demo and put about an hour into it, but if I just have to repeat the demo for another few hours I dont know if i'd want it.

TalkBack / Re: Unannounced Titles Coming to Wii U's Launch Window
« on: September 26, 2012, 10:50:30 AM »
My guess is that it will be nothing more than additional party/sports games and eshop titles.  Nothing first party or AAA, though.  Not discounting any decent eshop games, but I doubt any of the unannounced stuff will be headline-worthy titles.

On points vs actual currency on eShop, in Nintendo Network deluxe program description they mention points, so i guess, points are to stay.

Havent listened to the podcast, so I may be incorrect when I say this, but I'm pretty sure the points are not the form of actual currency you use.  You use real dollars to buy a game, then you are rewarded with, say, 500 nintendo points for your 50 dollar purchase.  You can then apply those 500 points to your next 50 dollar purchase to make it a 45 dollar purchase.

Dissappointing but expected. However, I'm sure it won't be long before someone manages to hack a Wii U version of Gecko?

I bet they find an exploit with the system's wii u mode.  That'd be my guess.  The online persistence and connectivity will probably be the factor that prevents me from ever modding it though, as typically you give up those features once you start to mod.

TalkBack / Re: Why Nintendo TVii Could Be Really Cool
« on: September 17, 2012, 03:29:26 PM »
I mentioned it on the RFN thread, but I think it's more appropriate here:

I like TVii better than other services not just because it's free and an aggregate of all of the services, but because nintendo does not have its own agenda to SELL you its own digital content (like amazon/googleTV/apple/Zune/etc).  It is the unbiased middleman that isnt trying to sell you any media product other than the system itself.  The fact that it wont be pushy/redirect me to buy content/display ads for its own service make this stand out among the competition.

Why does everyone assume it's bayonetta that will be in smash?  Why not the main guys from wonderful 101?  They fit in with the nintendo style way more than bayonetta, and can use all their attacks (sword, gun, jello) as B moves?  New IP for smash, exclusive to nintendo systems, and would fit the smash style perfectly.

Podcast Discussion / Re: Episode 306: Suckers Anonymous
« on: September 17, 2012, 11:31:56 AM »
Sheesh James, stop being so harsh on monster hunter!

It's an HD Online version of the equivalent of the 2nd expansion pack of Tri.  Each subsequent 're-release' is more like an expansion pack, akin to something like the frozen throne for warcraft 3, etc.  It adds more content (equipment, monsters, weapon types), a new story mode, and a bunch of other additions to help streamline content.  Anyone who is a huge fan can appreciate the amount of content that actually gets added.  To anyone who doesnt know much about the series, do not assume this is just a modified port of the wii game.  It's much more!

Also, the reason that I like TVii over other services (like xbox, apple, google tv, etc), is that Nintendo does not have its own agenda/marketplace to push.  It is unbiased as to what content provider you choose.  Nintendo does not provide its own video/music on demand service.  Therefore, the interface is not skewed towards purchasing more content, but rather simply FINDING more content.  I'll definitely use this provided it works as advertised.

ALSO, I think the virtual console stuff will EVENTUALLY be ported over to be run natively on Wii U, but this is a stopgap for launch.

If Pikmin 3 is releasing spring 2013 in Japan, that means NOA should be able to localize it by the end of 2015. Sweet.

Hey hey hey, this isn't "new play control" pikmin 3.

I wonder if such achievements are visible in the miiverse, akin to gamerscore/trophies.  Achievements are like boy scout badges, if you can't show them off, they're not as special.
