General Chat / I think my motherboard died...
« on: December 04, 2007, 09:07:45 AM »
Well, here's the problem: my brother was playing a game on my computer, it froze, he hard restarted it and now it boots to the screen with the motherboard manufacturer's logo, then does nothing else. I can press the delete key to try and enter setup, and while the "Entering Setup" message appears, nothing happens. It'll just sit there. I can't get it to do anything else.

So far I've tried the RAM, both sticks are fine and work in my other computer.  I've tried using the CMOS reset jumpers. Still nothing. I've even pulled the motherboard's battery out for 30 minutes to try and let it restore itself to factory settings, and nothing. I can't get it to do anything.

The board is a few years old, and the CPU was lightly overclocked, but can anyone help?

Seriously you idiots, don't!

They can't tell the difference between a post actually supporting them or a flame, so all you're doing by mocking them is encouraging more of the stupid bots to come and play.

And don't use the .gifs as an excuse! You can find those anywhere.

I just noticed that having a pink bomb with a crank in the shape of a heart as my avatar may lead to unwanted assumptions.

Your thoughts?

General Chat / So, I just finished the book Starship Troopers...
« on: November 04, 2007, 08:51:05 AM »
Alright, why didn't someone tell me to pick this up earlier?

It's almost everything I ever wanted in sci-fi. A basis in reality and fact, along with background that makes the world believable. Political undertones that really do make you think for a second. What really is the meaning of rights and duties? And last but most certainly not the least, power armor. I can't believe I had missed it for so long...

And I swear, if one of you so much as mentions the horrid film adaptation, you'll leave with several broken ribs.

General Gaming / Portal - The Cake is a Lie!
« on: October 13, 2007, 03:02:37 AM »

Welcome to the Aperture Science Enrichment Center. One the test is over, you will be baked [Garbled words] cake.

Anyway, Portal is one of the games that comes with the Orange Box. It's best called a first-person puzzle game, as while it uses the same engine as Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike, the only weapon you have is your trusty Portal Gun (NOTE: Do not submerge in water, even partially) and your not-so-trusty brain.

I'll throw some screenshots up later, but at its basic level Portal is about getting from Point A to Point B. But normally this would be impossible, but not with your Aperture Science Enrichment Center Handheld Portal Device. The game itself is only 19 Test Chambers, but that's not counting the Bonus Maps, Challenges, ending levels and, of course, user-made maps.

Now for the plot:
You play as a test participant (willing or unwilling is unknown) named Chell Johnson. Yes, it's a woman. I'd like to say this: NO SHE'S NOT AN ANDROID OR COMBINE. THOSE THINGS ON HER LEGS KEEP THEM FROM BREAKING AFTER EACH FALL. Anyway, Chell is much like Gordon Freeman in that she never says anything. But that doesn't mean Portal doesn't have personality. That comes for the AI giving you directions, GLaDOS. Some of the things she says are hilarious, especially the ending song. You're promised cake at the end of the test, but the scribblings on the walls from previous test participants tell a different story...

I can't be the only one loving this game on NWR.

Really, it's such a one-trick pony. Sure, you've got rational thought but then what? But madness, ooh, ooh, the options are sky-high! I was walking down the street today when a large badger tried to mug me fortunately I had my spork on me, and dispatched it easily- but oh, those badgers have friends. Powerful people. Those damn birds kept crapping on my head. So I spent the rest of the day finding their nests and  crushing their eggs while shouting vile obscenities about their mothers. Strange how they made their nest in Styrofoam containers in refrigerators, but either way some old woman with an apron started shouting at me and told me to leave but I told her that I was in the in the middle of an important interrogation but she wouldn't listen. I went to grab my spork, but she got a broom and scared me off so I left and grabbed a trashcan before the birds could renew their attack and beat her to death with it then stole this traitor's skin and wore it for an undercover mission but got distracted by this interesting butterfly that landed on some flowers that I then crushed and laughed at for being so fragile. And these women kept pushing these weird roller things that cried when I grabbed them and pushed them down a steep hill to laugh at the woman trying to catch it but then some guys in black and white cars with blinky lights came and started shouting at me so I started crying but then when one walked up to me I stole his gun and shot him and then the others shot me but I shot them too and I started shooting those damn birds before they could start their attack again but ran out of ammo and I went back to smashing the eggs I had missed.

Damn seals.

General Gaming / Meet the Soldier - Team Fortress 2
« on: August 23, 2007, 02:33:50 AM »
There's a new "Meet the  ____" video out, this one about the engineer. He's much more relaxed then the others classes seen so far, and the humor in this is more subtle.

Youtube Link

Soldier post:

Youtube Link - Be aware, he's rather violent...

Though he wanted desperately to fight in World War 2, the Soldier was rejected from every branch of the U.S. military. Undaunted, he bought his own ticket to Europe. After arriving and finally locating Poland, the Soldier taught himself how to load and fire a variety of weapons before embarking on a Nazi killing spree for which he was awarded several medals that he designed and made himself. His rampage ended immediately upon hearing about the end of the war in 1949.

He's very much a Patton-like figure. And I hope that Valve does one of these "Meet the ____" for every class.

Also, you can pre-buy the Orange Box on Steam and get $5 off and a copy of an Orange-Box themed version of the game Peggle.

General Chat / Necromaning a Laptop
« on: August 17, 2007, 02:57:12 PM »
It's a Compaq Presario 2100. Yes, it sucks, but I got it for free as a friend gave it to me as the hard drive crashed on it and they ordered a new laptop before asking me. Anyway, right now there are two problems: the hard drive and the keyboard.

First is the easiest: Hard drive's busted. Apparently the default one these ship with is a pile of junk. Ran a diagnostic, loads of bad sectors. It's dead. I can pick up an 80 gig SATA (2.5 inch, of course) for ~$60. The old one's a SATA also. This I'm certain of.

Next, is the Keyboard. The guy tried to take it apart to fix the drive (despite you can access the hard drive without removing the case) and broke the keyboard cable. Being a good guy yet an idiot, he attempted to fix it by using Krazy Glue. Yes, Krazy Glue. The connectors to the mobo look clean, but is there any way to make sure without damaging the thing? I've found a replacement keyboard on Ebay for $20 (with shipping), and I want to make sure it'll fit into the slot.

Anyway thanks.

I figured that this would help from getting Bill's thread too crowded.

Anyway, I think it's an interesting idea. A character who takes no actual part in the fighting and relies on his underlings is really a twist on things. I just wonder how KO's will be handled.

Let me start this off.:

Why the bloody, bloody hell does she leave her armor? It's a choice between a jumpsuit and a fricken suit of power armor with a cannon mounted on the arm. Why? There should be no gain in that, only a loss of endurance.

Also, why sexualized her so? She's one of the few video game heroines that hadn't been sexualized, now this (I didn't like the out-of-armor parts of Metriod Zero Mission, either). Is it too much she stay as a cold-blooded world-weary warrior instead of yet another cliche videogame babe?

NWR Forums Discord / The best anti-zombie weapon?
« on: August 05, 2007, 01:28:56 PM »
Oh noes! There's a zombie in your house! What should you do?

Sadly, a lot of people have seen so many zombie movies the first thing they'd do is go to their shed/garage and get out the chainsaw. Yes it looks cool, but is it really the best zombie-hunting weapon? Think about it. It's heavy, runs on gas and makes a lot of noise. Plus the signature mess might be a curse. After all, if infections spread through the blood, the splatter might be your undoing if you have a single cut on you.

The ace card of any zombie-hunter, then, is the shotgun. Remember, you're trying to remove the head or destroy the brain, and a shotgun is the best for that. Just aim at the head and shoot. Unlike what some video games make you think, the spread on shotguns (unless they have seriously short barrels) isn't that huge. It's perfectly acceptable to use it at medium range.

Anyone have any opinions? A car might be a better weapon. It can be used to take out a large number at once and to provide transport and shelter.

tailoring the gameplay for the millions of gamers in Asia? I await a framegrab from Bill with an interpretation of that. In the meantime, someone on another forum created this bit of concept art:

Chances are it will be just a localization of the GUI, but rational thinking is not the point of the Funhouse

Really, the game plays a lot like Pikmin. You play as an evil Overlord intent on destroying the Seven Heroe that killed your predecessor. Now, as a standard villan, you don't want to do the hard labor yourself. You can control up to 50 Pikmi- I mean minions. They can attack enemies and move heavy objects out of the way or carry them back to the Spaceshi- I mean Tower.

Now, the Overlord is no Olimar. Olimar could punch, but wasn't that great in combat. The Overlord, however, in standard evil villain fashion, is clad in dark armor with an axe that can feasibly swung to do some pain personally. Also, he's got some magic spells. In the demo I saw, the only one available was the fireball. Interestingly, fields of grass are flammable, and the fireball clears all of it quickly - along with any critters in it. The game looked great and ran smoothly at ~60 fps on my friend's 360, but he and I couldn't help but laugh at how much it was like Pikmin.

Also, while you're suppost to be an evildoer, the quests in the demo had you HELP a peasant village by rescuing some of their kinsman from evil halflings. This is unacceptable! I wanna be a jerk! I wanna rescue the people so they hail me as a hero and invite me for a feast, then wait until everyone is dead drunk and kill them all!

NWR Forums Discord / I grow weary of ninjas...
« on: June 07, 2007, 11:41:02 AM »
Seriously, what has happened to ninjas today? Every time I see one in a game or such they're wielding a katana and charging into battle. What the hell? Ninjas were assassins. They used stealth, not bum rushing the foe and screaming. Ninjas used daggers, not katanas as a longsword would be too big and awkward to pull out at a moments notics. If a ninja got into combat with a guard, chanes are the ninja would die easily. They had one specific target they went after, they didn't take on an entire fortress.

I'm no expert in Japanese history, but it just makes no sense. Is it just me, or has anime seemed to totally ruined the common interpretation of ninjas?

General Chat / Secondary Hard Drive now "Unformatted or Damaged"
« on: June 02, 2007, 01:27:23 AM »
So, I was apparently wrong in my assumption that when I told Debian 4.0 (a Linux distribution) to install on the 20 gigs of unpartitioned space I had for it, it wouldn't touch the other partition with a vast majority of all my stuff on it. At least, that's what Windows 2000 said happened when I popped in its install CD it see what went wrong. The drive still shows up as a disk in Windows, but it claims it isn't formatted. Doesn't list the capacity, either. Linux's install partition is absent,as I think it uses a different file system.

Now, I still have my 40-gig C-drive, but all my games and most of my other files were on the larger one. Do you know of ANY way to repair a drive without reformatting? Because, you know, I REALLY need it. Desperately. Like, I've got several months worth of work in Photoshop and 3DS Max on there that I don't want to disappear.

NWR Forums Discord / Possible Wrath of Rome comic?
« on: May 29, 2007, 08:58:29 AM »
Well, I was bumbling around the net, and got the Eternal Silence mod for Half-life 2. The second I saw the UTF marine model, I had to test something. After some (very) minor modifications to the mesh and a color swap, I imported this into Garry's mod. Picture taken in-game, I used a non-colliding white isolation cube with all faces facing inward to isolate the character. Now, it's not perfect as it's not power armor, but it could fit the role of an armored Praetorian. Once I learn to get facial animations working on custom models, I could even slap a head on this sucker. There are more then enough scifi maps for the source engine for scenery.

What do you think? Does it scream "elite super soldier" to you?

+++ INCOMING TRANSMISSION +++
+++ SENDER: BATTLE-BROTHER SIR_STABBALOT +++

+++ SUBJECT: "Cure for 'furries'" +++
+++ BEGIN TRANSMISSION

"Brothers, I am but a Battle-Brother, not yet even a Justicar of the Grey Knights. However, I cannot wait for this new to be passed through official channels. I have no fear of retribution, as this information is critical. It may be outside my authority, as the Grey Knights are the Chamber-Militant of the Ordo Malleus and this deals with the Ordo Xenos, but I must speak.

The Ordo Xenos has determined the only cure for these foul abhumans known as 'furries' is DEATH.

Spread the word. All specimens captured for research, interrogation and probing are to be purged immediately. All areas they have inhabited are to be cleansed totally. Any planets they still hold onto are to be shattered by the might of the Inquisition's Exterminatus.

It has been determined there is no way to restore them to humanity. Let them die and be forgotten, lest they corrupt even more. I trust that all of you, from the lowliest Imperial Guardsmen to the greatest Chapter Master will obey me. Nay, I know you will. You are servants of the Emperor. May His Blessing be upon us always. As it is said, 'Suffer Not the Unclean to Live'.

Glory to the Emperor!"
