Unless anyone objects, I think we should add the N64 switch online games to the nominees for best Nintendo game.

Treat this like you are the host of a forum game. You can ask for feedback or consider if you want to incorporate suggestions from the players. But, ultimately, just set up and run this "event" as you want to and don't worry if it is quite to everyone's taste. You want to put in the work for it then you can call the shots of how you'd like to see it done and what it will all encompass. After doing it, you can ponder over after if there are changes or other things you'd want to try or incorporate if you want to do it again. In the meantime, just charge full steam ahead and rule with an iron fist!  >:( 8) ;)

I'm afraid I just don't have enough time to play all these games to accurately judge them in time for this award ceremony. And that is sort of the inherent flaw with a lot of polls asking to rank games. Most people voting are doing so without a full comprehension of all the games being voted on. That's probably why I like the Oscars or movie type polls more because it is much easier to keep up or see all the entries for that type of "competition" than games.

But I will give out the award of Best Retro Release to Mario Party and Mario Party 2 on the N64 Switch app. Congrats on the added online play!

Nintendo Gaming / Re: What's Next For The N64 Expansion Pack?

As for the current games on the App, the first thing I went to was the old Super Mario 64. You know, it's really been a long time since I last played this. It isn't something I thought about or noticed since that game is highly ingrained in my memory and so much about it has been imaged and referenced through the years. But the last time I played this would have been around 2016 when A Straight Up Trippin' Balls Forum User had the idea to do a gaming Olympics and I participated by seeing how many coins I could collect in World 15. (That was an odd sentence.) But aside from replaying that one level, I think the last time I fully played through this game was around 2005 when SM64DS came bundled with the DS system I just bought.

Playing it again now, it's a weird blend of almost feeling fresh while also feeling routine. I'm reading all the signs and relearning the controls a bit while mostly just collecting them stars pretty efficiently and as I pretty much know what to do. For instance, I remember it took a long time to master that flight cap and collect the 8 red coins in the area where you press the red switch to activate those caps in levels. This time around, I got them on my second try. I've collected all 7 stars for World's 1, 2 and 5 along with like 7 or 8 Secret Castle stars and left off at World 6. Skipped World 3 and 4 for now. The hardest thing sometimes has been camera control and fighting how I want to turn it sometimes. Although the actual hardest thing was getting to the Boo balcony / roof in World 5. I knew where to go but could just not jump up to it. I was trying all manner of things for like 30 minutes including going back through the rest of the area to make sure I wasn't missing a switch to give me a middle platform or lower it because it seemed to be too high to reach the door for the area. Finally pulled off getting up there only to slide off the roof after when going to collect the star. Got frustrated enough to see what sort of move I should be making and looked up a couple videos of the level being played to see people doing a wall kick that was enough to reach the area. A couple more successes of getting up to the top and falling off the roof eventually led to me getting that darned star by being smart and making some save states along the way. I knew I needed to get up there for one more star and as I did more practicing and trying to recall how I used to handle this in the past, I had a moment at last in which I finally clued in on the control combination that got Mario up there and then I was able to get up there much quicker and in time with the Vanish cap. Still, by far, my most hated moment when replaying this game right now. What was the thinking on that design?

Also dove into Mario Golf, a pull of nostalgia. Up there with the Mario Party games and Mario Kart for the most multiplayer I did on the system. My brother and I played many golf tours against each other. Playing it again now, I miss a few refinements that the series had from the last time I played it which was World Tour on 3DS. However, I've been able adjust enough to what it has and feel I've been doing slightly better than when I last played it. The added nostalgia hit from the music has kept me coming back for a few more holes. But, hoo-eee, I imagine this game will get a "Special" edition like some of the SNES games had in which it unlocks everything because having to unlock all the additional characters seems like such a long task right now that I'm not sure I'm all that up to doing again.

Another game I've dabbled in is Dr. Mario 64. After UncleBob's longtime praise of it on these forums and remembering how I always kind of wanted to rent it and try it from the days of Blockbuster and later regretted not trying it, I find I'm not that blown away by it. So far I've just done a session in the story mode which has been a rather weak story. It's just been the Dr. Mario experience. Doesn't seem like anything new or different from what has come before. It has the feel of Nintendo betting on the appeal being limited and not spending too much money on it so that it is more of a budget title or, let's say, B picture compared to the prestige or blockbuster picture of a Super Mario 64.

R.I.P. to my Switch backlog. Those games now seem even further away of getting played with me in N64 mode. (And still no DK64 in sight despite thinking it might be happening before some of the other stuff now getting released like the Mario Party games and Goldeneye. Probably for the best though. That's a long game I don't know why I want to play through more Beaver Bother again.)

Wait wait wait woah woah wait, was there no game released in September? What gives?!

I guess they are making up for it with 2 Mario Party games releasing this week.

Welp, Mario Party is what got me to take on the Expansion Pak online addition. That said, I also got the Family plan and currently have two people joining me as I look for one more to make it a 4 person plan and then we can all just keep paying as if it were the regular online fee.

With the two Mario Party games on their way, that will give the N64 App 21 games which equals the amount of 64 games released on the Wii U and there's more on the way so it will be surpassing the Wii U offerings as anticipated. Will the N64 get as high as 40 games on the app after all? I felt somewhere that this was my predication for what could theoretically be possible especially if Rare games are in the mix.

Well, well, well. This sure went according to plan....  :P

To make a long story short, I was unable to launch the game last month because my rolodex finally failed me and I just couldn't seem to get the player count up to 16 as various people I reached out to declined to play. As it turns out, launching it then might have been a headache anyways.

Hope no one was too worried about my well-being. I'm pretty much fine. Just taking care of a bunch of things I'd been putting off but needed to finally get done now like automobile maintenance, technology upgrades, and other life decisions and responsibilities combined with a busy time at work. With no clear ETA for when this game could happen, I didn't really know what to say or post about whether this game could happen or not. Combined with the stuff I was trying to also get done keeping me pretty busy from checking in too often, I just found it easier to say nothing and ignore the whole situation.

But now that I've had a well-deserved vacation, I'm ready to see if we can't get this game happening yet. And maybe with a month's time passed, those that couldn't make it before can make it now. I guess I'll check in with everyone again and see what the ultimate situation will be for this game.

Wave Race 64 just came out, didn't it? It was the latest game to be added to the service.

NWR Mafia Games / Re: Mafia XC: Theme to be determined. Sign-up Thread.

Could be, could be. However, I should probably get some invites/reminders going. Should check with ThePerm and Luigi Dude. Crimm and lolmonade would probably join if I contact them on Discord. Go through the rolodex and see who else I can check on. Plugabugz may want another shot.

I thought I'd hammer out the details on this a few days ago but I've let time slip away on other projects. That said, since it seems like most people signing up were already jumping on the Xenoblade bandwagon, I can confirm I'll make this a Xenoblade Chronicles 1 themed game. I've been thinking a bit on this and there's a couple things I might be able to do to bring some of that Xenoblade flavor to the rules of Mafia.

I know I had set the deadline of starting this game for Sept. 12 aka tomorrow but let's push that date back to next week Sept. 19. Hopefully that won't inconvenience too many players who have signed up. If all goes well, that time will allow me to find a few other players to get the player count up and I'll also start writing up the rules and roles to get those posted.

Finally, when it comes to roleplay, I'll be taking the character of Alvis so that one is off-limits. You know it makes sense for the host to have that role.

Don't worry about it.

I was trying to not double post, but nothing's been happening so... I have little choice!

Pshaw! I double post all the time.

I suppose it is time to update the big board to see how this month has gone.

A strong finish with 22 more games added to the total for the month. I guess the 11th day helped get in a little higher number compared to the 21 games finished during the first ten days. That brings our grand total to 56 for the month. How will the games industry keep up? If there's anyone else that has a game they want added to the total then you better post it quickly over the next couple days.

As someone who enjoys lurking with these games even if I'm not the biggest fan of playing them, I may or may not also have plans to throw my hat into the hosting ring.

Now that's a perfect solution. Get people who don't care about playing to host the games so that those who do want to play don't have to sit out a game.

Splatoon - Story Mode beat. Although there a two secret scrolls I need to go back and collect. Pretty good stuff. When the boss called me a slimy hipster, I was fully committed to taking him down. Want to go back and do some splatting and see what the different Turf War areas are like.

Was wondering if I could also wrap up Just Dance 4 last night but had to stop if I was going to eat anything and shower before bed. 12 songs to go there. Almost had my first 5 star ranking. I seemed to be like a move or two away from it with how the ranking meter looked. I guess I should admit that it is not like every time I dance along I'm doing great in case I've made it sound like these games are a breeze. Have a bunch of two stars and the rare 1 star in which things are not clicking. It can be frustrating when I seem to be perfectly in rhythm with the screen and yet am just getting OKs or misses. But this isn't a game to take too seriously.

*Amazingly today, whilst “sick” I was called and offered a new job or more pay, full time at the same organisation. I said yes.

Backlaugust pays off!

As for Metroid Dread, it's a funny game. The first time I played it, all the bosses seemed so hard as you had to slowly learn their attacks and get better at those counter attack moments. When I tried playing through it a second time to see if I could bring my time down and start unlocking the images in the gallery, most of the bosses were much easier that second time around. By the third playthrough and then a run through Hard Mode, they'd pretty much lost their challenge.

Even if you don't play it a second time, I recommend at least trying to get all the collectibles. There are some tough and tricky ones to collect and they are sort of mini-puzzles to work through.

If it's available, I wouldn't mind hosting the next game. It'd give Khushrenada a chance to go for back-to-back wins, and I'm kind of curious if he can make it. I'm sure he'd kill for the opportunity, which is why I'm offering, it's for everyone's safety!

It doesn't seem like people are safe even if I get to play the game based on how the bomb word selection went. Even though we satisfied your curiosity to see if I could pull off the back-to-back win, please feel free to host another game. With a perfect record so far for Season 4, it would be nice to play more rather than just get the automatic points for hosting. Plus, my luck has to run out at some point and I'm sure there are a lot of players after this game who would like to be the one to bomb me out in the next game. ;)

Khushrenada finishes in 1st, which by his own admission just now means he lost!

So, it is finally accomplished. Back to back wins. That's the way I like it. Especially when it comes to Penguins Hockey....

Thanks for playing everyone. Hope I didn't start to sound insufferable as the game progressed and I got playing up the roll of bomb word villain.

Thanks for hosting Insanolord. This is a compliment, I swear, when I say that you showed hosting this game doesn't have to be that complicated. You kept it simple like the game was devised to be with everything flowing smoothly from round to round. There may not have been a big in-depth Final Four write-up or big story theme but there doesn't have to be. Each host can have their own flavor and handle the action as they see fit. So, thanks for being willing to step into that responsibility and get another game happening. Feel free to do it again sometime. ;)

That said, I'll do my part to help out by posting the point totals in a couple days after BacklAugust.

Now that's a signature!

Perhaps this is a stupid question, but I gotta ask, if doing things like this is such a terrible experience and you hate a game, then why do it?

I'll tell you why I've done it before as I've wondered that myself. Part of it is stubbornness. I don't want the game to beat me as it were by the challenge. Then there's the time factor. I feel that if I walk away from it then my current skills at the game may be rusty so if I'm ever going to do it then now is probably the best time while my mind is still well in sync with the game and what its systems and controls are like. There's a little bit of a personal pride or "bragging rights" mixed in with knowing that most players probably won't have finished this challenge but you conquered that mountain. And there's still a sense of some satisfaction that you can mark off and consider the game fully beat and complete. When you look at the game or see its title, you don't think about how you never finished this or that. There's no niggling feeling in your brain about it. That itch has been scratched.

Things are looking grim.

I'll agree. More and more people have been pulling me aside wanting to know how I'm doing and what it's like going 7 days without seeing a credits reel. Gotta say, it's been hard. But it's also been my own fault. After trying to get regrouped last weekend to finish the month strong, I then proceeded to play nothing since my post last Monday. It wasn't until Sunday night that I played anything again as I dove back in Rime. Not sure I'm going to finish it in time though. Was checking a FAQ to get an idea of how far along I am and it seems like I've kind of hit the middle of it. Went back to Splatoon last night. Got 10 more levels or so to go so that still seems feasible. Not sure if I'll be able to squeeze much more in or not at this point. So many things I got to do and want to do in life.

Since the title of this game is "#2 is #1" then the second place player is actually the winner right? There were no formal rules posted so all we have to go on is the title.

That's what I'm assuming which is why I'm trying to select the Bomb word in this round. Although maybe that's just Insanolord's back-up excuse to ensure I cannot win this game. If I pick the bomb word then Insanolord will claim TOPHATANT123 is the winner. But if I select the safe word then he can also claim TOPHATANT123 is the winner because he came in second. Basically, the whole thing is a big Anti-Khushrenada Conspiracy that I go into great detail in my new book about which you can find in bookstores everywhere right now. Just ask for The Paranoid Truth: When Everyone Really is Out To Get You by Khushrenada.

"Signed, an Untrustworthy Liar"

Welp. After being the villain of Mafia for so long, it's nice to know I can expand my repertoire to also become the villain of Safe Words. Where's nickmitch to warn you against trusting Khushrenada when you need him?

My, oh, my. So, it has come to this. It's a shame my "shell game" against Order.RSS couldn't have been the Final Round. Would have been a heck of a finish especially with how that played out.

But Safe Words history will soon be made with this final choice. Either we have the first back-to-back winner or we have the first player to win 3 games of Safe Words. (And no matter the outcome, I've got my Safe Words reputation safely in tact thanks to this previous and pertinent post:

What's your game, Insanolord?  >:( Is the fix in? Are you and Toppy just conspiring in some kind of unholy alliance to take me out no matter what I choose....?   :'(

With that said, this is TOPHATANT123's fifth time in the Finals. He has a 2 - 2 record. His first win was Safe Words 9, his second Safe Words 15, he was denied a back-to-back win finishing second in Safe Words 16 and then lost to Insanolord in Safe Words 18 giving Insano his first win. He almost had a win in every season but was denied twice in the three games that made up Season 3. Here we are in Season 4 and he is trying to get that third win now.

From zero to hero.

One more obstacle and then I'll have the title, but it's one hell of an obstacle.

Khushrenda has aptly demonstrated above why they've had this game in the palm of their hand. Good luck to you.

And, sincerely, good luck to you. You're definitely a dominant player in your own right. I just wanted make sure I made it to the end to get the rare opportunity of a possible back-to-back. Accomplishing that feels like I've won the game already and if I go down against you then I'll have been stopped by perhaps the best player currently in the game in a 50/50 draw so ain't no shame in that.

All that's left to do is make my selection.

With the final selection in the final round, the Untrustworthy Liar Khushrenada selects Milhouse. May God forgive what we've all done here today.
