General Gaming / Re: PS4 web browser
« on: March 25, 2014, 06:59:44 PM »
I've had the PS4 since launch and haven't actually used the browser yet. I think my experience of the Wii browser sullied my opinion of all console browsers.

The Wii U's browser is a huge improvment. The Wii U is a lot more powerful than the original Wii, so the browser is faster, plus the GamePad's touchscreen makes navigating and entering text much easier.

General Gaming / PS4 web browser

It's a nice improvement over the PS3's, but you can't even use the touchpad to control the mouse pointer. Surprisingly, the Wii U's browser is faster than the PS4's, despite the Wii U being significantly less powerful. How is that possible?

Also, I'm very surprised that the PS4 is so small and compact. With all that powerful hardware, you'd expect it to be put in a bigger box with plenty of ventilation. The Xbox One is in a big box with plenty of airflow, tons of vents, and a huge fan to prevent overheating. Smart move by Microsoft.

Hopefully Sony updates their voice commands soon. They also need to add MP3 playback and external hard drive support. I still can't believe that Nintendo is the only one that lets us use external hard drives for game installs. It's an even bigger issue for Xbox One because it doesn't have a removable hard drive. Installing games to an external hard drive should be very easy to implement; all Microsoft has to do is format the hard drive to the console.

I bought an Xbox One a few days ago. At first I really liked it. The interface is easy to use and the Kinect features are great, but I just wasn't really getting into it. So yesterday I asked Best Buy if I could exchange it for a PS4, and they said that would be ok. So that's what I did, I got the last PS4 in stock at one of my local Best Buys.

True. I don't understand why people say the Xbox One is failing even though there is only a 3 million sales gap between it and the PS4. Yes the PS4 is selling more units at a quicker pace, but that doesn't automatically mean the Xbox One is a failure. The Xbox One is selling much better than the Wii U, so there's something to consider.

People tend to forget about what happened last gen... PS3 had slow initial sales and a higher price, but when Sony released the cheaper PS3 Slim model it quickly caught up to the 360. The point is, short-term success means nothing when this generation will last for at least 6 years.

Does it really matter who is "winning"? Both Xbox One and PS4 are selling well, and they are both getting plenty of games from all the 3rd-party developers. What's with all the fanboy hate?

The camera is optional, though. I didn't buy one, and I doubt most people who bought a PS4 did. Microsoft doesn't give you a choice. The fact that if you buy a Wii U and all the controllers necessary to play everything in Nintendo Land it costs about the same as an Xbox One doesn't make them the same price.

But you need the camera to broadcast your games, so the viewers can see and hear you. And many people are broadcasting their games on PS4 and Xbox One, proving that those cameras are fairly popular.

Why are people so apprehensive about having a camera on a game console? Nobody freaked out this much when the PS Eye and original Kinect were out. And before you mention 'privacy concerns', remember that your smartphone also has a camera. Oh no, the government is spying on us, blah blah blah.

The point is, Microsoft included the Kinect with the Xbox One for the same reason that Nintendo included the GamePad with the Wii U; to ensure mass market adoption and to enhance the user experience. Controlling my Xbox One with voice commands is so intuitive, and I love broadcasting gameplay through Twitch.

One more thing, if you don't like having a camera with the system, you don't have to use it. You can enable privacy settings to ensure the Kinect never listens to you in the background. I don't use the TV functions on the Xbox One or Wii U, but I'm not pissed that they were included. They're simply extra features for people that want them.

Stuff

Wow you read way into my original topic. I was simply saying that all this fanboy arguing over which system is best is ridiculous. PS4 and Xbox One are both great systems that will get plenty of games and developer support. People may have preferences, but one system isn't superior over the other one.

As for the other stuff you said, people don't want one console to rule them all. However, it would be good for game consoles to stop being so proprietary and locked down. Multiple manufacturers can make consoles that all run the same games, and they would all run a standardized OS to ensure cross-compatability. Developers shouldn't have to make different versions of the same game for different consoles.

Look at smartphones and PC's, for example. A Samsung Galaxy can run the same apps as an HTC One; an HP laptop can run the same programs as a Lenovo laptop. The software (OS) controls the experience, not the hardware, and that's how game consoles should be.

It's the combination of being more powerful and less expensive and launching at the same time. PS2 and 360 had a year's head start to build market share.

If you buy the camera and a $60 game with the PS4, the price equals that of the Xbox One.

External storage for Xbox One is coming in the future. Allowing game downloads to external storage should be easy. All they have to do is format the hard drive to the console, like what Nintendo does with the Wii U.

I love the Xbox One's interface, I love the new Kinect, I love using voice commands, I love the "Snap" feature for multitasking, but the lack of upgradable internal storage is a downer.

Every generation it's the same damn thing.

"Xbox is best!"
"PlayStation is best!"
"Xbox is selling less so PlayStation automatically wins!"
"Xbots can keep their Gaylo and Tears of Whore! PlayStation has more variety."

See how juvenile it all is?

Does it really matter who has an early sales lead? It's way too soon to determine a "winner". Last gen everyone thought the PS3 was a failure, but then Sony released the PS3 Slim at a cheaper price and sales rebounded. All these fanboys should just be patient and buy the console they like.

People keep complaining about how the Xbox One is less powerful than the PS4.  Xbox 360 was less powerful than PS3 and it still sold great. PS2 was less powerful than the original Xbox and GameCube and it still sold great. So why are people complaining now about hardware power when that was never a deciding factor with previous consoles?

Also, the $500 Xbox One isn't selling either.  :(

-------------------

It's selling more than the 360 did at the same time period. Since when was a 3 million sales gap considered failure? When the PS3 was released the 360 had a 10 million sales lead, but the PS3 quickly caught up after the Slim was released at a lower price.

I hate how fanboys (not you) assume a console is "winning" or "failing" after only 4 months on the market; it's way to early to announce a winner. A console's success should never be judged on early sales figures; sales can change in an instant.

The early sales DO matter though, if early sales are too low and companies lose money on releasing games for the system they drop support for it, Wii U sales were pretty good up front too but they dropped off.

The original Xbox sold slightly worse than the GameCube, yet it got tons of developer support. The Xbox One will not fail like the Wii U did because the brand is popular with "core" gamers and developers. PS4 and Xbox One will get the same amount of games because developers tend to treat those platforms equally.

I hate fanboys who ridicule others for buying a product that they don't like. Some people like Xbox, some like PlayStation, some like Nintendo. Why all the hate? What's the point of arguing about it and perpetuating this stupid "console war"?

I bought the Xbox One Titanfall bundle a few days ago, and I downloaded the free version of Killer Instinct. I can't wait till the system finally gets external hard drive support...

General Gaming / Xbox One and external storage
« on: March 14, 2014, 01:22:42 PM »
As we all know, the Xbox One doesn't allow users to easily replace the hard drive (without voiding the warranty). I really hope Microsoft allows us to backup game data to external storage, because that 500 GB internal hard drive will fill up quickly with game installs and downloads. Nintendo allows (requires) Wii U games to be stored on external hard drives, so it should be an easy feature for Microsoft to implement.

119
I like my Xbox One, but I love how quick and clean the PS4's UI is (the Xbox One's UI is a bit clunky in comparison). I love how both consoles can record and broadcast gameplay, and it all seems more intuitive on PS4.

120
Ok now that I got the negatives out of the way I'll talk about what I love about the Xbox One...

- The "Snap" feature is amazing. If I want to record or broadcast a game that I'm playing, I simply snap Game DVR or Twitch next to the game and it works beautifully.
- Kinect's voice commands make it much easier to navigate the clunky OS.
- Support for external hard drives is a welcome bonus for people who already filled up their 500 GB internal drive.
- Uploading gameplay videos to OneDrive (SkyDrive) is awesome. I can then simply download them to my PC and put them on YouTube later.

Sony really needs to have their own cloud storage service for downloading PS4 game videos to the PC. Or they could just integrate Dropbox into the PS4's OS.

121
I might return my Xbox One to Best Buy and just order a PS4 from Amazon.

Since I already redeemed the Titanfall code and downloaded the game, will Best Buy even take the console back?

122
I just bought an Xbox One, and so far I'm very underwhelmed. The interface is a hassle to navigate, with everything hidden away inside apps. The Xbox Store is a mess, with no way to sort products by price, publisher, release date, etc. You can't rate or comment on gameplay clips made with the Upload Studio. And I hate how you can't swap out the hard drive like you can on the PS4.

PS4's interface is much cleaner and better organized. All the important settings are at the top of the screen. The social features are implemented better, with Facebook, Twitch, and Ustream built into the system OS. The Share button makes uploading and broadcasting gameplay clips incredibly easy, and I'm surprised that the Xbox One doesn't have one.

And what's with all this talk of Microsoft giving up on the Xbox brand? It's their most popular product next to Windows. Xbox has proven to be successful, if Microsoft dumps it then I'll definitely switch to PS4.

Speaking of Windows, it's had many failures, but MS never gave up on it. The failure of Windows 2000 led to XP, Vista led to Windows 7, etc.

General Chat / Netflix / Hulu removing content?
« on: March 10, 2014, 04:11:32 AM »
Why do Netflix and Hulu constantly remove movies and TV shows? This never happens with PSN, Amazon Video, iTunes, etc.

Why does this only happen with video content and not music? You don't see Spotify or iTunes removing songs from their service.

Nintendo Gaming / Why should Nintendo drop the GamePad?
« on: March 04, 2014, 03:56:28 PM »
What's with people wanting Nintendo to get rid of the GamePad? People made this same complaint about the Wii Remote, yet Nintendo didn't drop it because it was required by many games. The GamePad is also required by many games, and dropping it would render those games useless.

If Nintendo sold the GamePad separately, no one would buy it because it would be too expensive. It's better to include it with the console so everyone has one and it's universally supported by developers. And $300 for the Wii U is a much better price than $500 for an Xbox One.

Another thing, people actually want Nintendo to bring back casual gamers? Do people not remember the backlash Nintendo received for making to many casual games? Sony and Microsoft do just fine without the casuals, so why does Nintendo suddenly need them again?
