The Recliner Conundrum
« on: December 31, 2011, 05:21:50 PM »
So my wife bought me the recliner I've been wanting for Christmas.  The only thing is that she wanted a Sofa for christmas and we ended up getting a sofa and loveseat.  There isn't room in the living room for the new recliner.  We were loading the recliner into the truck to return it and my wife joked that I could use it as a computer chair.  I thought this was a good idea so now I'm sitting on it in front of my computer.  Though is a recliner really a good computer chair?

How does it feel to you, is it still comfortable after a few hours?

That sounds like a terrible idea.

Of course, this all depends upon the recliner, but I highly doubt the ergonomics are present for long term computer use. You generally want to be sitting straight up, feet flat on the floor, with your elbows on the armrest and straight all the way out to your wrists... which would ideally be supported by gel or foam forms on your keyboard tray.

That said, if it's comfortable for you, then use it. I'd worry about the longterm effects, though.

Attach a swing arm to the side and mount your monitor to it.
rest your keyboard in your lap (or get a swing arm table to attach it to)
sew a mouse pad onto the arm rest.

place a sub woofer underneath and 2 rear speakers in the headrest.

Buy a Sony 3D headmount display

I think you will have the most awesome computer chair ever.

edit: I swapnoted you an illustration ;)

I don't know why this didn't pop up in my unread ones.  I've been using it as a desk chair since I posted this.  It seems to be working ok.  Its comfortable during long sessions, like most of today.  The downside is I get sleepy in it sometimes and I have to climb in.

should be fine, it's really going to be about your desk than the chair for ergonomic reasons.

This sounds like the best idea ever.  Do this.

This probably isn't the best idea when it comes to ergonomics, as previously stated.   However, I'm the least ergonomically-sound person on this planet, so I'm not really one to give advice for this. ;_;

Couldn't you just holster the gamepad somewhere on the side? It'll be sitting right in your lap during actual use, after all. ;)
