3DSCave Story 3DAug 09 -- November 8, 2011

Nintendo Gaming / Thinking about Getting 1 Wii Madden.
« on: July 20, 2011, 11:58:20 AM »
Preface:  I’m not a big Sports game gamer.  I admit I prefer the more arcade styles when I do play sports games like NFL Blitz and NBA Jam.  That being said the recent debates have got me interested in Madden for Wii simply because it’s not this uber-complex Sim.  I only want to buy one and cheap be nice so What is the Best Version?  What differentiates them, especially controls wise?  Being not a Sports Guy, roster means next to nothing to me.  They could all be Chipmunks for what I care.

Meet the Contenders:
Madden NFL 07  (Mike Garmin | 7)
Madden NFL 08 (Mike Thomsen | 6.5)
Madden NFL '09 All-Play (Neal Ronaghan | 8)
Madden NFL 10 ( Neal Ronaghan | 9)
Madden NFL 11 (Neal Ronaghan | 8)
Madden NFL 12 (Not Out Yet)

So from reading the reviews posted here, I’m not branching out for discussion reasons, it seems Madden NFL 10 would best fit my needs because it sounds like 11 tries to enhance 10 but end up muddling things.  Though 12 may come and address all those.

I thought we might have a pro and con on these for my type of playing style.  I think the pointer passing could be cool.

General Gaming / Mass Effect
« on: July 06, 2011, 10:13:51 AM »
I started playing Mass Effect and it seems we want to talk about it.  I'm liking the game even though I've just done maybe 45 minutes of it.  Dig the Sniper rifle but, I'm probably going to be starting from scratch.  Why you say?

Class choices.  I hate when a game makes you choose your class first without letting you sample what makes them different.  I went with the default Shepherd but tonight I'm going to reset my game and try a different one.  I really like the Sniper rifle it seems so I like one that will help with that but, should I be more engineer or magical...  I've only hacked one thing and I haven't used any adept abilities...

Happy 250th Episode Radio Free Nintendo!

So what did I get you?
A cut of Episode 103 into a more Traditional RFN Episode!  Only 145 Episodes in the making...Enjoy!

Disclaimer:  This belongs to RFN.

The beginning is rougher then I like.  I only had the MP3 to work with though the rest of it I think comes out pretty good.

Why?
This whole thing was inspired by listening to Episode 212: The Mice Will Play referencing this Episode and listening to the Episode itself.  IF you liked Pax East: Drunkcast go listen to Episode 103: James Jones Box Hunter in its original form as well.  It is great in a non-RFN way.  If you didn't, just listen to this one.

Hello,
This is a game from Natsume where a little girl sneezes her soul out and must dance for monsters to get it back.  Its a rythm game by all accounts and I have seen impression or reviews for it.  It was shown at E3 in the Natsume booth so.... Who played it and what can you tell me about it?

Ok this game is cheap.  I get to the second to last room and it automatically defeats my 8 lvl 2's and tires out my white guy who reveals the room because he ended up last in the rotation.  I had a guy to clear the darkness so why not let him go first and do his job... blah
But its a free game so I can't really say anything can I.  I think the strategy elements are interesting if the couldn't just fully own you.

Nintendo Gaming / Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door
« on: June 08, 2011, 11:28:22 PM »
I picked this game up for $15 and always wanted to play through it.  I'm having fun.  Just finished the first chapter.  I really made this thread because I just ran into Luigi.  That whole story is funny.  I would love to play a Paper Luigi based off of the tale he tells.

I don't know how to take a screenshot on a Mac laptop or I would.  It works on other systems but in Safari 5.0.5 on OSX the Third Row goes vertical and under the text on the front page.

Nintendo Gaming / May be the Proudish owner of 9 DK Bongos
« on: June 02, 2011, 11:28:40 AM »
Hello,

So I've been looking for Bongos and found a lot of 9 on eBay for ~$20.  Since that was cheaper-ish then getting the 2 I actually needed I bid on the Bongos.  Know I think 4 is the maxed supported so that leaves me with at least 5 that are homeless.  I thought I might decorate them so NWR could give them away as  prizes and the like.

What type of Decoration would you like to see on one of the Bongos?

This just in.
UncleBob is looking to upgrade the Armor Class of all the Forum goers to "Thicker Skin."

no one who doesn't easily get upset really cares about it.
Some people just need thicker skin...

This has brought up many questions throughout such as:
Will this new Armor grant bonuses to Spell based Forumers?
Does this enhance my Karma based abilities?
Will this Hinder my Movement Capability?
Will this finally upgrade my abilities to the point of  Summonning Cat-Tank?

We'll be back with more breaking news as it happens.

General Chat / Movie Sound Theory
« on: May 24, 2011, 09:54:04 PM »
I'm watching Harry Potter Deathly Hallows and yet again this is a movie sound movie.  I know their are a lot of movie buffs on here but, does anyone know a good article that explains the current sound philosophy for movies?

I find it very annoying.  I'm watching a movie have it at a good level to hear the peoples voices then something thats not talking happens and it blast my speakers.  Who thought this was a good sound philosophy?  Where did come from?  Who was the first to use?  Most importantly Why.... Whyyy?????

So from what the article says this is going to be you versus the monster type deal.  Does anyone think they'll get this?  I've been tempted to get Monster hunter because people keep comparing it to PSO.

I found King James review of My Life as a King, and as the other fan of FFCC (I got it on launch with pins and the guide.), I bought it when I saw it.  I like tower defense games so My Life as a Darklord would appeal to me but I didn't know that it existed.  I love to read a review on this site about it.  Especially King James take on it.

General Chat / Picture Organizing Software
« on: May 06, 2011, 04:24:51 PM »
Hello,

We have an eclectic mix of folks here.  Has anyone ran across a piece of software where you can load in your photos and it will create a timeline using timestamps and do the map thing if they have geolocation tags?  I want to send my pictures for the last 8 years to my grandparents and it be cool if I could provide them with a map of where and a timeline of when.  Do you think their might be a market for something like this?

Oh my lord.

I just went looking for this game online because it might be nice to play through all of Prime again and I hadn't done it with the new controls.  Its expensive and out everywhere.  I thought the price might have dropped a little by now.  I have all the original primes.  I don't know if it be worth picking up for the going price.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia L: Retrospective
« on: May 02, 2011, 09:04:29 PM »
Hello Everyone,

Mafia L is over.  I was going to do a huge Retroactive in 2 parts because I wanted some unweighted answers to some questions but, I quickly abandoned that after Day 7 thread.  Well here we are.  This is going to be a wall of text that I hope future host will learn from my gross mistakes.

I'm sure everyone realized this but, the rules came out looking more elaborate then they should of.  I was trying to really hone them in so that the general Townies had a good base to work on.  I was also a stickler to following them even when I really wanted to throw them out a window  just to move the story in the direction I wanted it to go.  I had made the rules I was going to have to live with them.

While we're on rules here are a few I put in on hindsight:

Only voting Mafia count.  I planned a lot of this game based on the assumption that I have a semi-active mafia.  I figure they may not really play in the vote thread but I figure I generally get 3 votes.  The no-vote was to be an incentive to actually vote.  It didn't work like that.  The ironic part is that a lot of the story revolved around the mafia doing stuff.  Which had me flying by the seat of my pants a lot of this mafia game.

Inactive rule.  I thought about retrofitting this in but, as I mentioned above, I was trying to be strict in my rule interpretation.  I probably kill half the members of the game with this rule and when I would have let it fall. Apdude would be the only Mafia at that point and you know that might have helped the game.

Move Madness Rules to the bottom.  Not a rule par se but I think if I moved the Madness rules to the bottom the whole ruleset might have been better understood.

I think the role mix was ok but, I think if I did this again I probably give the Saving Spirit the ability to investigate instead of save if so chooses.

I'm sure everyone knows this but there were 4 mafia members.  I debated on it being five mafia but the 1 to 4 ratio was suggested by a more knowledgeable host so I went with that.   I didn't tell everyone because I honestly didn't remember a mafia where the number was immediately known and it didn't come up on the material I read preparing.  I thought I had revealed the number when I said this:
...
There are 17 Players,  which is a relatively good turn out.  Roles should come out sometime today and Gameplay will start tomorrow with the first story post.

<players>

We are looking at a 4 - 17 day game.  I figure it will be closer to 9-10 Days.

I honestly thought that the game would start out chaotic while the mafia discovered each other.   Then as they found out about each other they organize.  By that time the Townies would be starting to organize themselves and the mafia would have started infiltrating the townies on their own and would need to reconcile themselves.  Plus with how the Reveal worked it was very possible that only one side of the mafia reveal would know definitively from me that the other was mafia so their be a bit of mistrust at the beginning.  Thought it would be an interesting mechanic.

I'm going to be linking my notes for everyone so you can see my stuff, the rolls, and the little ending blurb I started with for day 7 which is also different then my original ending.

In fact the whole story sort of changed as it was set the Mafia was being inactive.  Their was a specific reason I didn't want aliens in the town and that was the Mafia wasn't going to be from the town.  Every Mafia member was sent a questionnaire to fill in as part of their role text.  Apdude sent his in but no one else did, first sign.  This was sent so they could set what they were.  I ended up choosing for everyone else.  You can see the infamous role messages in my link.

The original story was pretty cool at least in my mind.  Their are still references in the current story and I used it as the base but the new story is very much more town focus then the original.  Here we go.

The mafia is a really an organization that is setup outside of time.  They moved their from their own given time streams after the events of the Catastrophe.  They believe that the Unity  stifled the chances at a better life for their races and species. The Scientist had started to find different spots and places were little changes in history needed to be made to start to steer time away from the the Unity occurring, think back to the rubber ducky story.  At one point the most influential portion and place in time was established and agents where dispatched to that area, this would be Mira and the agents where the Mafia.

The other side of this conflict is well… everyone else.  More notably The Madnesss(Old Foe) and The Saving Spirit(The Interferer).  They were inspired by Quantum Leap.  The Saving Spirit I imagined as more of a leprechaun and he talks like that.  Original I was going to have one of the stories days told from his perspective.  Obviously that never happened.  The Madness on the other hand played a more prominent role then I thought it would.  As told the Madness is well chaos embodied spawned over time.  If you had to imagine his appearance it would look like a jagged clawed shadow extending from someone with shadowless parts where Eyes would be.  Both the Saving Spirit and The Madness know each other and are for the same goal in this instance which is to cause the Unity.  Of course The Madness thinks The Saving Spirit is too soft and generally despises him, and The Saving Spirits obviously does not agree with The Madness methods.   The Mafia is well aware of these two after multiple engagements throughout time and thats why they refer to them as The Old Foe (The Madness) and The Interferer (The Saving Spirit).

All the sides are good, except The Madness who is well crazy for all intents and purposes.  I always believed that the best villains where good in their eyes.

The Unity is one of two points in time where all the majority of timelines converge and the Catastrophe is the second point where this happen.  The Madness knows this and thats why he keeps mentioning time is durable to justify his actions.    On flip side the Mafia wants to cause what they call the Separation which is the prevention of the Unity and allows the creation of a night infinite number of alternative time lines that never, to everyones knowledge, collapse again to the Catastrophe.

Welp this is where I stop tonight.  I've sort of ran out of time.  I have a lot more to share and here is the link to the notes.

NWR Mafia Games / Mafia L: Someone's Getting Fired (Day 7)
« on: May 02, 2011, 07:29:38 AM »
Who am I?  Where did I come from?  Where is here even?

"Hello Dasmos."
Is the man in white talking to me?

"You are less than I expected."
"Yes, less than he was,(so much less)."
"When I want your opinion I'll provide it for you."
Is there someone else here?  Maybe I'm suppose to talk with more voices.

"Lets hope that former rebellion was right."
The man in white roughly grabbed my arm and sprayed something on it.
I just knew the slick white plastic revealed was my real arm.

"He is indeed different but it seems the Mafia damaged him on his way here."
"I will call you Sas-Mo for now and you will come with me."
That was the day I started working for The Leader.

After depositing are newest most promising recruit I needed to scratch this Itch.

"This way, (Over Hear)"
As annoying as it was and how it muddled my normally keen senses, it did have its uses.
I  follow its directions to an abandoned portion of town.  It was condemned, leveled during DESC construction, and now used to store spare equipment and parts plus materials.  Still their were sections that didn't get filled in that led to the vast mostly forgotten underground city.  This was where we were going.

"Its here, (We sense it.)"
Once I had found one of these entrances I pry it up and step inside.  It wasn't long till I came across what we were looking for.

"Noooo, (What a Waste and Disappointment.)"
Their at my feet was what could only be called the remains of an in interlaced Lizard-man missing a scan pass so, this is what remained of the so called RABicle.  I know that if I ran this so called Mafia after what I found tonight someone would be fired.

"This sport is no longer fun, (My time is Wasted.);The job is done,(There are better Places)"
With that it was gone.  Tonight wasn't a total lost; a new recruit, a possible location for a more permanent base, and that thing out of my head.  Why this was really a Meal to a Hobo Situation and the future was looking bright.

Congratulations Townies!  You have won Mafia L!
I hope you have enjoyed playing.  Over the next couple days we'll be having a retrospective.  I know their are questions and I purposely left some of those unanswered.  If you like to see how this game shaped up to this unexpected conclusion please join me tomorrow/ maybe today if I get my thoughts in order fast enough.

Just to expand on this a little more.  I'm going to stay out of the discussion in this thread today to let everyone talk before I start throwing in my host viewpoint in.  Even then I have a few questions I like to get some answers about before I totally spill everything.
