NWR Feedback / Addition to the Forums

It looks really easy to integrate into a site.  I don't know how much we can tinker with the underlying code here in the forum but that would be neat to add if we could.

I was looking for an extended battery for my original DS and ran across this.

I can't find one for my original but I'm still going to wait for the next revision before I attempt to get another system.  Just wandering what experience people had with these because I do want to get an extended battery if I ever do get a new one, aka mine dies or a more ergonomic one is released.

General Chat / Some Good News for Gamers

ESRB Study which IGN has an article on talking about stating that more parents are paying attention and know of the ESRB ratings.  This is good news for as adult gamers.  It means that the industry might get the acceptance of Movies with their/there/they're ratings.  Allowing for more overall variety.  (Though I am dismayed by how all but "Meet the Robinson" at my local movie theater hold a PG-13 rating or higher, 9 movies)

General Gaming / Interesting Read: MS and users resisting change
« on: May 07, 2007, 07:27:02 AM »
In particular I like Smash_Brother to read this article.

Its an interesting article that talks about how Microsoft is having a hard time progressing on with its software because of the users.  Its much like on a computer old standards are hard to drop even if they make the whole machine faster.  It sort of goes with what I've been arguing for a while.

On the Mac side of things:

These two articles are interesting as well

105
Here it is.

Pretty interesting.

It just makes sense.

I didn't want to use the talkback thread because of the controversy.  I just got this game in friday and have been playing it since.  First off I enjoy the jobs it gives me a since of accomplishment when level grinding now that I know job leveling is done on the number of actions.  In fact I recently got my second set of jobs and I wanted my Geomancer and Ranger to be level 20 job wise... I gained 8 characters  and a ton of level on my scholar and thief trying to get those two up...

So far I haven't hit that uber boss difficulty yet.  In fact the best that any boss has done is 3 rounds (Thats only because I had to wait for the barrier shift).  I only lost a character once during level grinding because I wasn't paying attention to their life.   I just got the darkness lifted from the "surface".  Knowing how that was going to be I had leveled my character to 10 before I even had any jobs.

My party currently is:

Scholar 28/~60 Luneth
Thief 28/93 Rufia
Geomancer 28/20 Arc (Who really looks like a girl)
Ranger 28/20 Ingus

The Geomancer use to be a warrior then a knight and the Ranger use to be a Black Mage.  This has been working for me.  Also everyone dual wields except the ranger because of the bow.  I just got boomerangs for the Thief and dual Boomerangs rock.  Now only my Scholar is front row.

So yeah the level grinding gets old and I wish their was more description and like for the jobs/equipments/items .  Also I'm a little lost on how to get where I need to be right now.  I'm having fun though.

General Chat / You know what really gets me about modern Videogames?
« on: April 28, 2007, 06:46:35 AM »
The need to run the full credits after beating the first area or boss.  Super Monkey Ball, FFIII DS, and a few others are starting to do this.  Its really annoying.  Also Obsessive hand holding and harder difficulties that just make the monsters harder.  When I go to a more difficult setting I want more story, more gameplay, and different dialog if applicable.

Benjamin Heckendor.  I don't know a lot about him but he seems to make totally modded versions of systems.  Something I've always wanted to do but never had the guts, skills, tools, or space to.

I don't think anyone looks at the today page much even know.

Hello,

When I go to a Screens article I don't always get the little previewer thingy that lets me click through them.  I prefer using that.
Also is their any way to link the screens article to a relevent forum topic so their is an easy way to comment on them?

Ironically enough I cam across this from the Shook facebook group (328 strong and growing.)

Nintendo Gaming / Magaed Library for Windows for Wiimote
« on: April 09, 2007, 05:43:09 AM »
The Article

I saw this while opening Visual Studio to do some C# for work. I've only read the introduction so far but it sounds interesting.  I thought I post it here for everyone to see and take a look if they feel inclined to know more about how the Wiimote talks with the Wii and like.

I know that we have a contingency of Godzilla fans here.  Well IGN somehow wormed the choice of the new original monster in the new Melee game, that looks great.  So heres the link.

Personally I like the first and fourth choice.  I like to see the fourth in action but I think the first fits better.

I was looking at the ramen Wiki because of the ramen thread in general chat and I saw a funny vending machine in it.  That got me thinking.  Ty is in Japan I bet he sees tons of funny vending machines.

I was hoping maybe to see a little chronicle of these Vending machine sightings, the weirder the better.

General Chat / System Decision time.
« on: March 25, 2007, 03:59:16 AM »
I'm in a conundrum.  My hand is being forced I now must choose.

Here are the choices.

1) Buy a PS3 now so I can get backward compatibilty.
or
2) Buy a PS2 so I can play the games I missed, mine died earlier last year.  Then get a 360 later on for next gen.

Each have there pros and cons.  PS3 cost.  PS2 "limitted" usefulness.  If the 360 played PS2 games I be set because there are games I want to play on the 360.  If KH3 comes out for the PS3 and not 360 then I'm stuck buying a non-backward compatible PS3 at full price as well.

So what do you guys think?

Reader Reviews / Sonic and the Secret Ring
« on: March 25, 2007, 03:38:59 AM »
Alright here we go folks.

Game: Sonic and the Secret Ring
System: Wii
Date: 3/25/07
Reviewer: Ceric

Where does everyone want to start?  Oh I know controls.

Controls Part 1:
Initially the controls I'll admit take some getting use to.  Sonic starts out "slow" for Sonic.  In fact you sort of feel like your wading though mud.  Initially.  You use the Wiimote in Excite Truck style with it on the side.

1 Brakes/Cancel
2 Slides/Jump/Cancel
Up Speedbreak(Go real fast)
Down Timebreak(Black and White time slows down)
Note:  The breaks you don't get till later when you get a soul gauge.

That's all I'm going to say for now.

Levels:
Mostly they consist of you getting from point A to point B while achieving some goal.  Point B can be the goal itself.  Some of the choices that were made are infuriating.  (The scene where the dinos are chasing you and it goes to a front view or in my case anything that includes switch rails.)  Also the levels themselves are difficult with the wrong skills equipped.  In general these are the missions:

Paragraphs: The Lost Prologue Tutorials
Go for the Goal: Basic head to the Goal
Beat the Clock: Get to the Goal before Time is up
Head to Head:  Get to the Goal before Uhu does
Rampage!: Defeat a certain number of enemies
Stealth Attack: Don't defeat enemies
Collect Rings: Get a certain amount of Rings
Chain of Rings: Get a certain amount of Rings in a row
Hands Off: Don't finish the mission holding Rings
No Pearls: Don't touch a single Pearl
Diehard Challenge: Don't die
Perfect Challenge: Don't take damage at all
Special Challenge: Varies, read Mission objective
Boss Battle: Defeat the Boss

Personally I find Chain of Rings, Stealth attack, and Stealth Attack Extreme(aka No Pearls) to be the hardest.  Though initially Head to Head will be for most people.

Visuals:
The game looks nice and has good physics for the most part, there done by Physx by Ageia (its in the credits).  I'm doing a review of a stand eventual so I've be monitoring how hot my Wii gets, by feel.  This game tends to keep the Wii cooler then all the other games that I've played.  It never really hiccups and everything looks nice.  My biggest complaint would be that the form Sonic is in for the last boss fight he has no eyes, which he has the rest of the game.
Also there are cutscenes done in a comic book style.  Which I liked.

Sound:
Rings sound like rings.  Cheese Rock sounds like Cheese rock.  The main theme of the game will annoy you because it plays through all the menu screens.  Also the Japanese voices I enjoyed.  I heard the voice acting was bad so I played it with Japanese voices and English subtitles.  The advantage is that the voice acting has more feeling to it but the disadvantage for me was that the game took me longer because I miss hints, not paying attention to the text.  I couldn't get into the little bit I did play with the English voices.

Special Controls:
Wiggle. SHake. WIGGLE.  Its very tiring.  The last level you have to wiggle the controller to charge up your soul gauge so you can speedbreak to stop a ball of energy, really the only time in the game you have to use your soul gauge abilities.  It gets tiring.  You also move the Wiimote forward to attack enemies and when there is a really long chain of them and you have to redo a level it sort of gets to you.

Skills:
As you beat levels or replay levels you get skill points.  These points help you level and the level then give you new skills, more rings, more soul, and more points to equip skills.  This was a stroke of brilliance for this game.  As a mentioned earlier the right skills can take a level from insane to easily manageable.  For example:  on No Pearls level I dequip all my skills that involve collecting pearls, homing onto enemies, and speed.  Thats right speed.  Sometimes you need to take it slow to win.

Where I am at:
I'm level 43, I've beaten all of the missions that you can before you beat the last boss.  Beat him and went back and cleared all the missions for the four worlds after the first one.  I still have four more worlds that have a few missions each to completely beat before I complete every mission in the game.  I only mention this because I'm going back to controls from this perspective.

Controls Part 2:
Sonic is silky smooth.  As you level up you get skills that gives Sonic different attributes.  Now my Sonic when fully skilled up feels like containing a bull that wants to go at full speed.  If Sonic was initially like this I wouldn't have the skills needed to use this type of Sonic.  As I mentioned before you don't always want Sonic totally sped up and the skills let you do that.  Even slowed down to his original speed he is pretty responsive thinks to the skills that up his left to right speed on ground, in air, and sliding.

Multiplayer:
Just moved so I don't have anyone to play with.

Conclusion:
Well there were times in this game that I wanted to toss my controller, about anytime when I had to do lots with rails.  Though for the most part I worked though those times by levelling, a different skill set, or tenacity.  I was really stuck after I initially got to the Pirate area.  Then the game just "clicked."  All of a suddenly I had gotten 4 more rings and though many many missions in one 4 hour sitting.  The fact that I've beaten the story aspect of the game and I'm coming back to clear all the additional missions says something.  I'm not the perfect type but they taunt me and I know I have the skill to do them even though they are difficult.  Which makes it worth it.

Also I'm tired of Sega running the credits before the true ending.  Besides that annoyance the true ending is actually pretty good.  Do I think the controls could use a little more tweaking: Yes.  Would I trade all of my relatively useless Soul abilities and skills for one that would attract rings: In a heart beat.  Would I buy/rent the sequel: You bet.

After I beat all the missions I'll probably not come back to this game.  So the replayability for me is not that great.  Though I just found out that Big the Cat is in the game in some of the levels and I'll probably try to chase all those down.  If you are a perfectionist and need to unlock everything this game could probably easily last about double what it did for me.(According to the save time stuff about 25 hours at this point.)

Overall I give this game a 7 or a 6.5.  So I'll split the difference and give it a 6.75.  I really enjoyed the game now.  It started slow but now that I'm at the end point I can say I welcomed the challenge.  In fact I truly beleive that out of all the Wii games I've played, except for Marvel Ultimate Alliance, this has been the only one that I've beaten and haven't felt that I'm doing it out of a sense of duty and that the ending must be good.

Now I think I'll try to wrap up my loose ends before I return it.

General Chat / TMNT Movie
« on: March 25, 2007, 02:29:02 AM »
Ok everyone I saw the TMNT movie last night.  It was pretty good.  The story takes place after what everyone knows.  It's not another origin story.  In my mind it was a good choice.  Plenty of action but its not the main focus of the story.  The movie was more in line with a cartoon story arc then a movie.  Which in my mind is a good thing.

I have few compliants though.  The first being that overall the art style is kept to and looks nice because of it though there are parts where its uncannily realistic.   None of those are with the humans though.  The humans compared to the monsters, turtles, and foot ninjas are relatively undetailed most of the time.  It was an artist choice that works for it for the most part.  I guess that wasn't much of a complaint the next one is better.

If you watch the cartoon series on Fox, TMNT or TMNT: Fast Forward, then you have heard the voices they use for that show.  I, personally, feel that they found a good match to the characters with those voices.  The movie uses different voice actors.  For Leo and the non-turtle family characters the voices are pretty good.  For Raph, Don, Mikey, and Splinter thats another story.  Don and Mikey sound too feminine.  Splinter's speech is stilted more then it should be and just feels off.  Raph my biggest complaint is well his voice isn't as angry and a little high.  Also a large portion of the dialog is really good.  For the most part the bad stuff came from Mikey and Don.  Which is a shame because in the shows there dialog is generally top notch with the rest.

Something else that was annoying was how loose they were with the Turtles mouths when talking.  They're humongous.  They just sort of flap around half the time like a dog's with his head out the window.

I know I'm nitpicking.  Fact of the matter is its a good movie.  You do see Mikey use his nunchuks by the way.

At the end they setup for a sequel.  Which considering from the hints they give is going to be around a pretty good story arc.  Also the ending itself is pretty good and meaningful.

I will warn that if you like every branch of a story fully explored to its fullest you might be a little annoyed.  They manage to tie everything up at the end pretty elegantly but the why and how is somewhat a mystery in exact detials for some of the monster collections.  Though if you watch American cartoons regularly then your probably use to it.  As such you'll appreciate the movie more if you're steeped in the Mythos, there's a wall of past triumphs for example, but, you won't be lost to bad if you've never heard of the ninja turtles before either.

Conclusion:
If you like American Style Cartoons: Go see it.
If you like Movies in General: Go see it.
If you only watch lifetime movies:  You should Consider it.
Mystery Buff: Well it's definitely not a mystery.
Just go see it.

General Chat / Please do not use Fedex.
« on: March 21, 2007, 12:20:59 PM »
Hello everyone,

Going through the corporate incompetents that is Fedex has yielded me nothing.  I am here now to beseech everyone to avoid Fedex whenever is possible.  My Wife was suppose to get a phone from Verizon yesterday.  We weren't home no biggy.  The door tag said I could pick it up at their "local" office after 7 which happened to be in Nashville.  I was working late yesterday so it be no problem for me to swing by there on the way home.  So I have my tracking number, my door tag number, and valid ID.  They wouldn't allow me to pick up the package for my wife because it wasn't exactly her.  Strike 1.  Ok, so I couldn't pick it up.  What made that a strike was because I called them earlier when we found out that the packaged was missed to verify that I could indeed pick it up and they said I could.

Alright.  I called and told my wife the bad news and then drove the 40 minutes home.  The door tag said that you could do an indirect signature and just sign and they'll leave the package par your instruction.  Ok.  So my wife signs it and gives clear instruction what to do with it.  She came home and there was no package but a door tag that said you could do an indirect signature.  Strike 2.

So as of know she is picking up a package from the in town and more competent, well here at least, UPS.  Then she's driving the 40 minutes to get the package from FedEx; I couldn't go with her I have to do laundry for an interview tomorrow.  Being helpful I called up Fedex and asked if they knew if the package was going to be back by the time she gets their, 7:10.  Of course they only knew that the driver was suppose to be back at 7.  Alright understandable.  I went on to ask about pickup policy, why the instructions were not followed, and their word not kept.   The Customer Service rep turns around and tells me its per package and then she had the gall to tell me that she didn't know how it was on my package.  Strike 3.  I don't like being lied to.  I know they have the information.  She had the packaged looked up and it would be their if it required and in person signature.

Then 40 minutes back for her.  I doubt they'll let her even pick it up because it's under her maiden name.

Nintendo Gaming / Concept: Dress Mii!
« on: February 19, 2007, 05:33:04 AM »
Ok heres the concept it comes in two Flava's:

Flava A: Channel Update/New Channel
Buy the channel and it allows you to dress up your Mii and view other Dress up Miis.

Flava B: Game and Channel
Does what Flava A does but is a compilation of minigames as well.  Be around full price but would roll Wii Sport and Wii Play together.  Also it would add a number of new sports and mini-games.  These combined with possible other factors, like Poll participation or new games etc., allow you to unlock and purchase clothes.

In my version you would be able to buy clothes in 2 forms: Manual and Automatic.

Automatic:  Cost more then Manual clothes but they just sort of pop onto your Mii, like Super Swing Golf.
Manual:  Would be cheaper then Automatic but, to dress your Mii with these sort of clothes you would play a sort of dress up mini game. (Think about if you Mii is wearing a corset you would tread and tighten the corset.)  Obviously somethings, like putting on a t-shirt, have no real mini-game equivalent but I'm sure something could be come up with.

This collection of Mini-games would be the largest of the Mii featuring minigames to date.

Also I would have expansion packs, like card booster packs, that can be bought for like 100 points on the Shopping channel.

Just see'n what everyone thinks.

Nintendo Gaming / Wiimotes and Wiiplay

Hey everybody.

My Wife found 5 copies of WiiPLay and 6 Wiimotes at the Waverly Walmart near where she works.  If anybody needs a Wiimote I be happy to pick one up for you.  I just need you to send me the money and I'd ship it to you.  So let me know if anyone wants me to pick up one for anybody.
