who likes pretty charts to go along with all these lovely numbers?
...All of you!!? great!! then I have a treat for everybody!!

Looks like Wii just crossed the 7million sold mark in Japan (in only 2 years!! how many did PS2 sell LTD?) *celebration!?*
Also looks like PS3 is only on track to maybe sell 5mill, but just barely (in the 5yr console lifetime cycle)
And did you know that PSP has outsold the DS YTD 2008?
thats crazy, even though DS still holds 69% market share, the PSP is really doing well (hardware wise, how are the games selling?)

Wii's doing pretty damn well in a country whose third parties seem to have made it their life's mission to strangle the console in a sea of terrible software and half-assed efforts.

Wii is keeping pace with the PS2, despite the PS2 already having had major third party support in spades after two years, Like Final Fantasy and MGS 2.  It's amazing that they can't see something that's so painfully obvious, even after they got on board the DS after the exact same thing happened.

So... in order to get sales on Nintendo platforms... They should bring their best and brightest franchises and sure-fire hits and give full-assed efforts?  Awesome.  Glad we agree.

I assume this would be the reason the DSi exists.  Shame Nintendo doesn't realize that the PSP outselling the DS in one year doesn't matter when the DS total sales figures are so high.  Having sold so many systems that there's virtually no one left that doesn't have one is a GOOD THING.

Why's that a shame? Should they just say "sales dropped off, let's sit back and enjoy the lower profits"? They made the DSi to get more people to buy a DS. A market is never "saturated", you just hit the point where you run out of people willing to buy your product. The solution is to change the product to make more people willing to buy it.

It's a shame because Nintendo risks splitting the DS userbase and likely pissing people off with a half-step when the next true new portable is probably going to appear pretty soon.  The purpose of making a videogame system is more to sell games than systems.  Having everyone owning a DS is a GREAT thing because the potential userbase for each game is huge, and Nintendo makes a cut from every DS game.  Nintendo is acting like this is a big problem they need to fix.  This is the GOAL.  They succeeded.  If they have such a bug up their butt about hardware sales then they should make the next Nintendo portable.

The big picture is GAMES and Nintendo is missing that.

But I'm totally dragging this thread off topic.  Sorry about that.  Let's talk about the Wii. ;)

Nintendo isn't like other companies, though, in that they actually see the green when they sell their hardware. It's because of this that the company shouldn't get complacent and just be happy with a large userbase... as they can still generate a ton of profits from retooling and selling additional system/handhelds.

Well in Japan Wii hit the 7 million mark. Even though the 360 looks like its doing well basically did as good as it did last year so at 11/26.

So in Japan from LTD is(according to Media Create):
Wii: 7,014,754
PS3: 2,420,937
Xbox360: 755,935

So in 2 years the 360 didn't even hit a million.

The big picture is GAMES and Nintendo is missing that.

Of the countless reasons you could criticize Nintendo, this one is pretty lame (at least as far as the DS is concerned, anyway). The DS has UNPRECEDENTEDLY MASSIVE software support from both Nintendo and 3rd parties. The same thing cannot be said about the PSP. People are indeed buying PSP hardware, but it seems the only games selling on it are Monster Hunter and Gundam. Okay, so the PSP has a handful of games worth owning, but the DS has dozens and dozens...

So, I just don't understand your criticism this time. I often disagree with your criticism, but this time it goes beyond disagreeing with it. I just can't understand why you'd think the DS is being neglected software wise...
is your sanity...

Nintendo isn't missing any big picture about games, Ian.  Their games are doing amazing, and as a company that's all they really care about.  The only time they cared about more than their own games was during the GameCube years, when they were in third place and had no choice but to beg third parties to make games for their system.

Yep, the 360 was released in Japan back in November 2005 about the same time as the American launch.  Which goes to show just how pathetic Microsoft's presence in the Japanese market has been.

So... if everybody who bought a 360 or a PS3 in Japan is a hardcore gamer...

That makes roughly 3.1 million hardcores.  Now, the Wii has just passed 7 million.    If the market for hardcores is only 3.1 million and they all have Wiis too... are we to consider and believe that Nintendo has found an amorphous new segment of the market that is waaayy~ bigger than than the old market, such that the old market would have literally collapsed under its own weight?  Did Nintendo save the videogame market in Japan, and people should grovel at their feet for keep Japan relevant as far as games are concerned?

Or is it easier to swallow that the Wii grabbed a majority share of regular games?  (I go with this one, the other sounds pretty ridiculous.)

Not really for a console that's two years old Wii has a pretty good library, and I don't know if you remember but some of the best PS2 games came out late in the PS2 life. So I wouldn't discount Wii just yet since 3rd parties and 1st party will be strong hell Atari announced 3 games for Wii today ready 2 rumble, QJ a music game from Q?
