TalkBack / Re: No Plans For a DVD-Playing Wii
« on: July 01, 2008, 02:31:15 PM »
You're kidding, right? Cheap-P DVD players are significantly smaller than even the Wii. Larger, more highend players aren't even the much bigger, jut slightly wider. Anyway, dedicated machines always work better, whether it's a CD player or a DVD player.

Alright, I'll clarify. Of the DVD players I own, all are too large (and would be used too infrequently) to justify the space they would occupy and the hassle of having additional video cables running to my already-maxed-out TV (i.e., all inputs are in use). Because I stated that I would only use the feature a couple times if it were present, the difference in quality is a non-issue.

Honestly, if I only want to watch a DVD in my bed room once in a blue moon, any occupancy of space is not worth it. I'd rather wait for the living room to become available.

It's one of those polish-related features that aren't really a selling-point, but appreciated by the user when he finds it. That is, Nintendo wouldn't sell many more Wii systems by saying it has a DVD-player where you can navigate menus with the pointer (like with PC DVD playing software), but it would still be a neat part of a larger package.

I would have used the feature a couple times, since the TV cabinet in my room is too full to have a DVD player installed, but it's not that big of a deal.

Well the NES-style graphics (and probably sound) will make production quicker and keep costs down, which will result in higher profits. Keep in mind that this is sort of a risky release--it is tough to gauge the interest in a series whose core lineage has been done for over a decade. I think if MM9 is profitable enough, it will encourage Capcom (and other companies) to invest higher funds into these type of game revitalizations.

I personally love older technology (I was just cleaning up an Apple IIc earlier today and trying to find a compatible power supply) and find vintage gaming to have a special charm. I'm sure many game developers feel the same way, and this project will certainly be fun for them to work on.

I'm all for flash drive game saves, though.

Could it be a product of overheating? Is the Wii properly ventilated? Clogged with dust?

Try turning it off (unplugging) for a night.

It was a great game. Three people can't be wrong. Buy it used and love it like it was new.

I love the remix of the main theme that plays during the Purple Coin challenge in the Space Junk Galaxy. It's upbeat and cheery.

Edit: Other stages, too.

If Nintendo priced their games based on quality, we would all be broke by now.

No, I just wanted to get absolutely everything that I could before the final boss. Maybe I feared that if I didn't get them first, then after "beating" the game I would become disinterested in some of the levels.

Doing it this way had a sort of glitchy result when Rosalina put her countdown in the middle of the star pad. When she was explaining what it meant (the number of stars remaining until I could go to the center of the universe) it said that I needed one more. Right after that cut scene ended, the count dropped to zero and she announced that I could go now.

I beat the game with the absolute maximum number of stars that I could: 104. The final level brings the count to 105. The 15 remaining are the Purple Comets as I'm sure most of you know.

I always thought of the shadows of just a technical limitation (which I'm sure they were) but I never realized they were also intended to help with location. I guess that means it did its job.

And congratulations to Kairon! I may not post here very much, but I am a frequent lurker and always enjoy your posts.

General Chat / RE:Home network/MASSIVE file transfer help!
« on: November 23, 2007, 05:04:43 PM »
When dealing with Windows machines, I have (once) used ftpdmin. Open it on the old machine and its ready.

Go to the new machine and open Windows Explorer. Type in "ftp://192.168.1.1/" but change the IP address if you have to. You can now access all your old files. This would probably be easier if both systems connected to a router instead of directly to each other. (Security note: don't use this on an Internet-enabled unfirewalled PC. It is insecure by design.)

Another option is to buy one of those USB transfer cables. They work nicely.

That first complaint is not the game's fault. Read the Wii system manual for an explanation on how to properly associate the remotes. I played co-star tonight briefly with my brother, and he was able to jump right in.

I am picking this game up tomorrow, but the only sad thing is that its main genre-redefining features only really work (or make sense) in an outer-space environment. Will future Mario games, or platformers in general, be able to use and build upon this formula or will Super Mario Galaxy stand as a game so unique that its brilliance can not be adapted to other games?

I agree that games are getting easier, but one might argue that it is a natural progression away from the early days of arcade gaming, where games were engineered to wrestle one's hard-earned quarters out of his pocket. In an era where gaming is a one-time purchase, the focus naturally shifts to prolonging one's enjoyment with the game (so the consumer does not regret his purchase) rather than encouraging frustrated players to play (i.e., buy) again and overcome a system that is tilted in the machine's favor. Gaming is no longer an obstacle where the pleasure comes from winning, but an environment where simple interaction brings joy and victory--if present--is just icing on the cake.

I know I enjoyed just being in the overworld of the past 3D Mario games, and I expect Mario Galaxy to be no different. Still, nothing quite matches the feeling of defeating a boss you spent hours, days, or even weeks trying to overcome. Each system of enjoyment has its benefits, and surely the two can co-exist.

Game Informer does, however, have some quality cheats for the game. Written in 2003, no less.

It even has a subtle groove around the outline of the power button.

I haven't played a game with them yet, but I like how these gloves are built. They are easy to install/remove and you don't have to fully remove them to replace the batteries. Buttons are still easy to press.

Check the announcement on the front of the Wii Shop Channel. It mentions something about being able to view more statistics in nationwide results or something.

I tried my USB keyboard and it still only works when composing a message, not all over the Wii Menu. Similarly, the new Internet Channel only lets you type addresses and into forms, but there's no way to navigate the pages, aside from scrolling with arrows. Heck, you can't even press "Enter" to submit the URL you just typed--you have to go back to the Wii Remote.

It's a step though, and I'm sure forum-goers will appreciate it.
