I should clarify:  The Square Enix Online store is taking preorders now.

Um...I don't know why no one has posted this, but it's up on the Square Enix site NOW.

TalkBack / Re: Europe Getting Resident Evil 4 Wii Re-Release On Wii U
« on: October 24, 2015, 10:50:21 PM »
You've got to wonder about the timing of this....for people in NA, this would be pretty apt timing with Halloween, but in Europe, Halloween isn't really celebrated, is it?

The value proposition is also something which Nintendo must be aware of.   This is a cheap and easy to find game....are they really going to sell a lot of copies?   I think even the power of the brand and awareness of RE4 must be on the wane for more "casual" fans, and for hardcore fans, we already either own it, have played it, or know how easily and cheaply we can get it.

Maybe this is selfish, but what they should do is release some of the more hard to find, rare Wii games.   How perfect would it be if they released Radiant Dawn on VC when Fire Emblem If comes out?   That game is INCREDIBLY rare and expensive, even more so than Metroid Prime Trilogy or Xenoblade.   And they don't have to worry about kicking back money to a third party, since it's theirs.

Or why don't they take a tack from Sony, and do something like re-release Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn, and call it "Fire Emblem:  Radiant Chronicles"?   There Nintendo, I gave you that for FREE.    No need to pay marketing for that idea.

TalkBack / Re: Splatoon Adding Rainmaker Mode Tomorrow Night
« on: August 15, 2015, 01:02:22 PM »
You forgot to mention how the new rainmaker mode will let you go back in time to try to stop Emily Blunt's son from using his telekinetic powers from taking over the criminal underworld, only to have your past self commit suicide.

Oh, come on, you've had YEARS to watch that movie!

ARGH!

I just gave Gamestop like $30 for a USED copy of Return to Dreamland like 2 weeks ago.

I just can't win.

Eh.   Yeah, hard to compete with Mario Kart.   I haven't touched my copy of Sonic Transformed in a very long time, and Need For Speed?  I think it's still in shrinkwrap.

On another note, they say they've sold a million copies.  Does that mean they've actually turned a profit?   I get the feeling that it actually doesn't, which is sad in its own way.

Wow, this is very, very sad.   Wow.

33
Whoa.   Okay, then it must get released in NA, right?   It will be localized into English, right?   I think I remember some European saying that nothing gets released in just one EU language, they have to be released in at least 5?    Can anyone confirm that?

34
Oh boy. If there's an appropriately priced limited edition bundle that'll be up for pre-order for more than 9 seconds, I'll be alright with this.

Well, if we look to Pokemon for precedent, there was that AlphaSapphire/OmegaRuby bundle that was...78.99 or something like that?   Basically, saving you a dollar?  Well there you go.  Thanks, Nintendo.

Okay, 3 things:

1)  I like how they provided the screenshot from the demo---  funny how the prototype they made sounds like at least 50 different indie games on steam right now.

2)  Could this be the first 1st/3rd person shooter to hit it big in Japan?   Cuz in today's testfire, like 6 out of 8 players in my matches were Japanese, all the time

3)  Did they really all pull an "ink" pun at the end?  What does that sound like in the original Japanese?

37
Ha ha!   Donald, that was a nice understated ending to your DQ8 write up.  "..mark a change in strategy.."

Does this mean there's going to be a Nintendo World Championship Gold Wii U disc?   Will it be worth $10,000 in a decade?  More importantly, how will the dip-switches fit on the disc?

TalkBack / Re: Activision Announces Guitar Hero Live for Wii U
« on: April 14, 2015, 04:46:54 PM »
Just the sheer fact that Activision threw their hat in the music game ring again has killed any interest I had in this.

"Studio A is making a crappy movie, so i'm not gonna watch any movies", that is basically your logic.

More games is never a bad thing, even if you are not interested in it.

I never played the DJ Hero games, but Sing Party was pretty darn good with (unfortunately) some severely wasted potential.   It wasn't accurate with scoring, but man, it was FUN.   It was actually a group karaoke game where instead of just one schmoe getting up and singing, everyone (even if you didn't have the mic) was participating and having fun.  I only busted it out for maybe 3 or 4 parties, but they were super popular among everyone when we played.  And the production values were both slick and creative--  imagine if the production designer on those You Don't Know Jack games were put to work on a music game.

But no, this guitar hero game does sound pretty stupid.

I know that I'm joining the chorus here, but seriously--  the mobile game industry is just stupid.   I heard some snippet on somewhere about the massive amount of money King was making, not on whales or people paying to play, but on ADS.   In game ads.

Well, here's the thing:  what are those ads for?  There for other mobile games and apps, which because of the overcrowded marketplace have to spend substantial amounts of money on ads in order to get noticed.   Where do these advertisers get the substantial amounts of money for advertising?  Why, from the revenue that they are going get from in-game ads.  Whose paying for those ads?  Other app/game developers, of course!

So the breakdown is that a game makes money from ads, which is paid for by other games, which make money from ads, which is paid for by other games, and so on and so forth.

Oh yeah, this is rock-solid economics right there!   There is NO WAY anything can go wrong with this business model, no sir-ee bob!  Ponzi scheme?   Schmonzi scheme!

I see plenty of kids on Miiverse, so the notion that "kids don't play Nintendo games" is false. Also, a majority of people playing video games are teenagers and adults, and they're the main demographic of PlayStation, Xbox and Steam. Nintendo needs to reach out to everyone, not just kids OR adults.

Yeah, my daughter's 9 and her platform of choice is her 3DS.   She has her own Iphone, she has her own Ipad, but her top choice tends to be the 3DS.  Granted, she's my daughter, and when she walks into my office and sees my shelves and shelves of Nintendo games and systems, and when she sees my copy of Nintendo Force arrive in the mail every month, there's bound to be some artificial bias there.

But man, I checked her activity log the other day, and she's put 140 hours into Animal Crossing, 30 hours into Tomodachi Life, 10 hours into Disney's Magical World (not as big a hit), and 50 hours into Style Saavy.   It's almost embarassing for me, because I originally bought Animal Crossing for myself, I'm the mayor of our freakin town, but she schools me on that game constantly.   I've never even been to the island!

I still don't understand why everyone wants Nintendo to have just ONE console, instead of one portable and one home.

I mean, sure, it would mean we're spending less money, because we're just buying 1 Nintendo device, as opposed to 2.

And it would SEEM like we're getting more games for said unified console, because all of Ninendo's development resources would be focused on one platform instead of being divided between supporting two.

But wouldn't that just be the same status quo as now?   Sure, the Wii U doesn't have a lot of games this year.  Neither does 3DS.  But with a unified console, we'd still just have the same amount of games.  Hell, maybe even less.   Some years we get 2 Zelda games in 1 year (Wind Waker HD and Link Between Worlds, for example).   That would NEVER happen on a unified console.

based on Sega's recent announcement Shenmue is officially off the table at this point I would think. With good reason, talk about a game that is all hype, well deserved hype maybe but way over rated.

Talking about Shenmue, I wonder what the chances are we'll ever get a port of that Yakuza 1/2 HD release?  SICK BURN!

[Uh, cuz that series is basically Shenmue, really.]

You know, revisiting the issue of viewing 3D and how you become acclimated to it made me think of what people experienced when Taco 3DS first launched.

I know the guys mentioned the phenomenon of how when you first look at the stereoscopic 3D, and then you look at a screen with non-3D (like text on a computer screen), the text seemed to "pop" off the monitor as if it were 3D.   Anyone else remember that, or experience that?  I sure did.

I'd love to hear an explanation of why that happened and why it goes away--  obviously, now I can play Monster Hunter for a good 3 hours on my XL, and walk over to my computer to do something and my eyes don't play the 3D text trick on me.

Okay, thanks for all the info Aaron.  And a very good review, btw.

Also thought I would share that if you need a power cable, they sell them for $1.50 each at Daiso, if you live here in CA or WA.   They straight USB cables (USB on one end, 3DS power connector on the other) so you can plug it in to any old USB port or a USB wall adapter (which they also sell at Daiso for like a buck).

Nice!   I wonder why Nintendo put 32GB as the upper limit in all the manuals/literature/etc.?

FYI:  I did some searching and I did pull up some odd posts on Gamefaqs, of all places, where people posted things like "I know a guy who put a 128GB card in their 3DS."

And even curious-er, how come you are the first person outside of a random forum post to mention that you can put more the 32GB in there?   This is important knowledge, it should be spread.   And you will have to pry those E3 2012 demo videos off my 3DS when I am dead and buried.

I chose the latter -- after formatting to FAT32, I was able to move my data to a 64GB card (my original 3DS’s 32GB card was nearly full).

Whoa whoa whoa--Aaron, am I to believe that you can use a 64GB sdhc card?   Everything else out there says that the new 3DS XL only supports up to 32.

I too am pretty darn close to my current card's limit (I think I have about 2 gig's worth of blocks left on my 32GB sd card), and would love to upgrade to a bigger card when I pick up the New 3DSXL.

I hate to ask stupid questions, but are you sure that it's really supported?  I don't doubt that you really put a 64GB card in there, but did the New 3DSXL really recognize the entire card and create empty blocks for it?  Or is it only making 32GB's worth of "blocks" available for use?

Oh man....I kinda had a lot of coins here.  Like, I may be sharing too much information here and embarrassing myself, but I have Google Docs Spreadsheet of all my Club Nintendo redeemable games, which have time-limited promotions on them (like Smash Bros), which I should avoid registering until after July since I've already hit platinum, etc...

I mean, I have DS games that I haven't registered yet because I had already hit platinum at the time.

9498.

9498.

If you don't see how I fucked myself there, let that number roll around in your head for just a moment more.

The irony is, I though I clinched  exactly 9501, and was pretty freakin proud of myself for being a clever consumer, down to the wire on New Years Eve.  But guess what?  A $1.49 purchase is ROUNDED DOWN to 14 points, rather than 15!  And a whole bunch of Hyrule Warriors DLC at 99 cents each?  9 points, not 10!!!!!

Frickin Frick Frick!

Looks like Best Buy has their eshop gift cards at 10% off right now.

Not bad.  Not as good as it was during black friday (15%) or the two sales last year (20%).    But still, you're at least throwing in the best buy rewards points if you have an account (and you really, really should...you get back 5% off purchases)
