So what it comes down to is it's not exactly a reboot, but not quite a sequel.
More of a revised spiritual succession to the 1st movie.

I'm gonna pop it in just to watch the beginning again. I don't have the 1st HULK, so I can't chore through that one again (it had some cool scenes from what I remember though), but at least I will have a refresher on MCU Hulk.

I was excited to see the Hulk.  About Half way through I wished I would have went to see Charlie's Angels instead and it was like the 3rd one.  It was so bad that I didn't even attempt to give Incredible Hulk a chance knowing that it was suppose to be somehow related to the first movie.

I thought they made it quite clear it was a reboot. Didn't people make a big deal about the reboot being too soon after the first one and weren't some of the creators of the original butt-hurt about people pretending it didn't exist?

X-Men: First Class - 8/10

I can't believe it took me two years to see this, but college keeps you busy I guess. Anyway, it was very enjoyable. A lot of the plot happens way too quickly, and characters "evolve" in the blink of an eye, but it's better than having to tell back stories for everyone in the movie. Seeing the "retro" Magneto costume at the end is almost like seeing Darth Vader for the first(?) time in Star Wars Episode 3 (in a good way). I forgot to turn on subtitles, so all of the German/French/Portuguese (is that what they speak in Argentina?) stuff I have no idea what they said, but it almost made it better in that way.

Paranormal Activity 3 (8/10)
Good performances from all the cast, and the story was actually intriguing.

Paranormal Activity 4 (6/10)
Not really scary at all. The whole "cult" thing they discovered jives with the realism the series tries to portray. And the whole movie was basically an advertisement for Kinect.

The Awakening (7/10)
Boring. The twist near the end was surprising, but the whole movie was just boring. It wasn't even a real horror movie, more like a suspenseful thriller/mystery.

I couldn't stand Paranormal Activity 3. You'd think one of the girls would've brought up all that crap during the first two movies. "Boy, remember what happened to Dad?"

aren't they all prequels? or just the second one?

I fell asleep during all but the 1st one.... so excuse my ignorance on the series.

So the order to watch is PA3 > PA2 > PA1 > PA4?

and my original statement was supposed to say:
aren't all the sequels actually prequels? or just the second one?

But I assume you understood that. So I'll just clarify for the next person to come along and read it.

Thor 2:

Great movie. Almost as great as Avengers. Everything was just right. Kat Dennings was super hot.

3D was a waste of money though. There was no 3d whatsoever.

Uhhh... 3D Avatar is the only way to see that movie.

Is it overused? Sure, but should we do away with it? I don't think so.

The problem with 99% of 3D movies is that none of them were filmed in 3D and only added the post processing 3D to charge the extra ticket price.

When 3D is done right, it can be a nice effect.

Right now, the movies that are worth seeing in 3D are:

Avatar
Hugo
Life of Pi
Gravity

Those are the ones in which it is worth it. Animated movies like Pixar and DreamWorks are ok but I've never found any of them to yet be recommended as must see in 3D.

One other partial recommendation might be Pacific Rim. The first half hour to maybe hour, I really enjoyed the 3D effect of it but then it seemed to fade away to the point where I couldn't remember if there was even any 3D by the end of it. I just remember if feeling very strong and good at the start.

Other than that short list, no other movies have integrated 3D in such a way that it affects the viewing experience than that. Maybe I should have seen Man of Steel a second time because I was super impressed by its effects but don't know if that was because of the 3D experience or not. I never had a moment where I thought about how great the 3D usage was like those other films. I guess I'll see what I think if I watch it again on DVD.

Gravity I would pass on the 3D, unless you were going to an IMAX.

I think Alice in Wonderland had nice 3D.

Also, Pacific Rim is definitely on the 3D (IMAX) list.

Have you seen Gravity in 3D? Doubtful, or else you'd be singing its praises.

Yes, because you're a special unique snowflake that was the lone rational voice in the 3D crowd. It isn't dead. Sure, it may suck most of the the time but if it was dead they wouldn't be pushing it so damn hard if it wasn't profitable. Which, you know, it is. Which, you know, doesn't mean it is dead.

I saw it in IMAX 3D. The movie looked amazing. I just didn't think the 3D was super necessary. I peeked over the glasses a few times to see not much difference. Though the part where Clooney grabs the screw --or whatever it was-- at the beginning was neat.

I'd say Avatar isn't worth seeing no matter how many dimensions. Hugo was okayish.

Abyss and Terminator 2 are two of my favorite movies ever.

It's so heartbreaking to see JC turned to basically romcoms ever since Titanic.

Avatar may have a trite narrative but the sense of adventure is clearly nailed down. I laughed during portions of the movie that simply had to play out; the loudest when he banged an alien then went comatose. Still, wandering jungles that would give the greatest dmt/lsd trips a run for their money and flying on the back of dragons? That was gripping because who wouldn't want to do that, especially if all that happened if you were to fall to your doom and die would be to wake up? This is a video game forum right?

Oh. I'm with you in that Avatar and Hugo aren't in the same level as Gravity and Life of Pi.

Hugo annoyed me greatly when watching it because there were so many things about the movie that could have been solved very easily if the kid would just speak up instead of always running away like an idiot. Yes, Avatar was a bit cliche and melodramatic and I've had no interest in seeing it again. That said, it still had some great moments of action and wonder and I was satisfied enough after having seen it at the time.

Despite those flaws, however, I'd still recommend watching those movies to people as long as they saw them in 3D. In both cases, those movies demonstrate a high technical achievement of what can be done with this new medium and how it should be used. Not every movie is going to be perfect in acting, screenplay, directing, cinematography, or technical merits. Most films are good in some regards and lacking in others. In this case, both of those movies are very strong achievements in the technical field and that is why I say they are part of the few movies that 3D is worth it and makes a difference.

As for the movies that do not shoot in 3D but add it afterwards, I've always remembered the Colbert quip when talking about this process for the movie Clash of the Titans: The filmmakers were able to take the 2D images and convert them to 3D while still keeping the characters 1D. Brilliant.

I would have to agree with nickmitch, the 3D in Gravity wasn't entirely necessary. Watched it in IMAX 3D too.

I recently watched Looper, and Kick-Ass on bluray. Since I never watched them at the movies, but they're fucking awesome movies. I liked Looper a bit more though.

The screen size is what makes the IMAX experience essential for Gravity by he vastness of space is so much more vast when you have to turn your head to see all of it.
