Twilight Princess HD: Now with 100% more Amiibo!
« on: October 15, 2015, 12:57:55 PM »
With the recent reveal (and even more disappointing reality that Zelda U might become Zelda NX or be moved to 2017) of Twilight Princess HD, it's got me wondering what can be done with the game to make this new version more definitive than the original and Wii versions. I was also wondering what changes could be made to make the game okay or progress more smoothly. We've seen from Wind Waker HD that nothing is sacred- ship sailing and Triforce hunting as well as Miiverse integration and twin stick aiming were integrated. So, what improvements can be made to Twilight Princess, an already very polished and tight experience?

-Twin stick and gyro aiming on foot, and especially on horseback would be a nice preview of what to expect in Zelda U.
-The ability to switch between GameCube and Wii controls would be cool.
-Some sort of counter or marker system for Poes would be nice.
-Honestly, the improved skyboxes of Wind Waker make some hope they improve the ground textures of Hyrule field.
-I don't know if it would be possible, but I'd add more chests and things to find in Hyrule Field. Maybe this could be combined with refining the Dominion Rod quest in the end.

Other than that, I don't have man qualms with the game. It's one of the Zelda experiences I've enjoyed more than others. So I open up the question to you- what should be added/altered?

I think they have to offer both control options, Wii and GC. Being able to switch on the fly would be excellent.

I was thinking that making Hyrule Field more interesting would be a big improvement. You covered this.

Could they shoe-horn in some co-op features? Maybe an extra mode where one person uses the gamepad and one uses other controls? Some a-synchronous multiplayer that utilizes Wii U features?
How about an extra dungeon like Link's Awakening DX?

A bug detector would be good. I like collecting the bugs. Did they original game have some bug-detecting aid? I can't remember.

They'll probably make many of the tutorials at the beginning optional.  After Link Between Worlds and the upcoming Zelda U being open world, they've acknowledged the facts many aren't happy with all the hand holding and fetch quest they put in Zelda games like Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Skyword Sworld.

Basically when asked at the beginning if you want to heard the goats you can actually say, NO.  When the kids ask you to show off your skills before you can leave the woods you can say "**** off".

I also wouldn't be surprised if they lower the amount of light bugs you have to collect as a Wolf as well.  After what they did with the Triforce Quest in Wind Waker, lowering the amount of those light orbs you need to find from the bugs and only keep the obvious ones that you found in unique locations seems pretty likely.

Oh yeah, and they'll be a Hero Mode which right there will fix Twilight Princess biggest problem of being too easy.  Twilight Princess had a lot of great enemies and bosses but the damage they caused was pitiful and the game handed out hearts like candy.  Making it so the enemies can dish out real damage now and making the players unable to constantly heal themselves  will really improve the experience since now people will have to actually use all the moves they learn for combat instead of being able to just berserk your way through the game by just tanking hits and mindlessly slash every enemy.

I don't know if they'll make any changes to this one, they might just slap on an HD coat and get it out the door.

I like the opening of the game, but it does go on too long. If they found a way to speed things up without outright skipping it, that would be nice. The forced wolf segments are also very tedious, so I'd want those cleaned up and sped up as well. Those are my two main problems with this game.

The biggest change in Wind Waker HD was to streamline the part of the game everyone always complained about as the worst aspect of it, the Triforce hunt at the end. I imagine for this one they'd want to do the same to the opening few hours of the game.

If they do include both GC and Wii control schemes, I wonder how they will treat the "flipped world" that they used to make Link right handed for Wii?
My guess is they will release the Wii version and just map buttons to it.

I imagine they'll use the Wii (or Wii U) controls only (as in no GameCube controller support), and the flipped Wii version of the game. Like it or not, Link is right-handed now. Even in the Wii U (NX?) Zelda trailer where he fires the bow, he holds the bow with his left hand and the arrow with his right. And the World of Nintendo action figures - he's left-handed on the box art, but he can only hold his shield with his left hand, making the toy right-handed. And yes, I have one of them on my desk at work.

I'll grant the intro to Twilight Princess was a tad long, but it wasn't that bad. Just make it so you only have to herd goats and fish once each, maybe get through the forest to the first temple faster. I mean, this is a 40-hour game, I was fine with it opening up at a deliberate pace (and ultra pumped to get a new Zelda at the time). But I was also totally fine with the opening of Skyward Sword, which gets bitched about, and didn't find the Triforce hunt in OG Wind Waker to be the worst thing ever.

That's true.  Enemies aren't really designed to take the M+ into consideration.  Would definitely require a major overhaul.

They'll probably just stick to GC controls.  Maybe add some kinda of Gamepad support?

How did I only find out about this now??

TP is far and away my favourite Zelda game.  This news pleases me immensely.  Aside from the implied graphical overhaul, the only difference I want are the motion controls to be ripped out with extreme prejudice.  Or at least the option to use buttons.

Mr Nickmitch above mentioned SS M+ controls being added.  While of course everyone has different opinions and mine is worth no more than his, if M+ controls were added and the only way of controlling the game then I won't by even considering it.  I was initially excited about SS and eager to try it out.  Then I did.  They ruined the game for me.  Completely.  So much so I will not ever be playing my copy again.

So yeah, my .02c.  If there are button controls I will be all over this game.

The game would have to be playable with the controller that comes in the box with the Wii U, aka the GamePad. There could be other options, but if this is indeed going to happen it's certainly going to include the ability to play with standard button controls.

The IR sensor on the GamePad basically never gets used. The controls should involve duct taping the IR bar (everyone calls it a sensor - it's not a sensor, the controller is the sensor!) to you ceiling and use the GamePad as the shield.

Hate to say it, but Twilight Princess HD does not hold up well, visually at least. I was hoping for at least some new textures or *maybe* some updated models, but it looks exactly like playing Twilight Princess for GameCube (or Wii) on Dolphin emulator, without any added effects. Still a great game...just wish they actually updated it instead of essentially just letting the Wii U output the same exact game at a higher resolution.

Tale of two Wii U remakes.

I played through both Wind Waker and Twilight Princess for the first time in the past year.
One remake is already on my shelf because I found the game absolutely charming and was happy to upgrade.
One remake won't be, because the game just didn't appeal enough to make me interested in a double-dip.

It's cool to see this happen. It's also cool to realize that we can now play every Zelda game on either the Wii U or 3DS. (Are there any missing? I don't think so... as long as you exclude the non-canon games.)

It's just not cool enough to replace my Wii disc that plays just fine on the Wii U already.

I agree that the game is already pretty solid and I can't imagine them changing anything that would make me want to buy it again.  The major complaints I hear are a) the intro is too long, b) bug hunting is tedious, and c) being a wolf is more fun in concept than in practice.  I didn't find problems with any of these things except the intro.  I would definitely like to get into the first dungeon a little sooner.

A couple ideas for minor improvements:
- Make the Ooccoo an item you get and keep.  I hated having to find it in every dungeon (I actually missed it in one dungeon).
- Limit Midna's hints.  There are too many moments that she explains what to do without even giving the player a chance to think about it.

I actually haven't played this game in a while so I wouldn't mind doing so again, but there's no way I would spend full price on a game I already own. I'd bite on this for maybe $20 tops, but it seems unlikely to drop that far even for a used copy.

She was necessary if you wanted to quit the game in the middle of a dungeon and not have traverse the whole thing just to get back to the room you were in.  I didn't use her the first time I played through the game because I mostly finished the dungeons in one sitting.  It should really be a standard feature of the Zelda series, though--if you save your game it should return precisely where you left off...not at the beginning of an area or dungeon every time.

I disagree. Dungeons are small and short enough it is irrelevant and they make plenty of shortcuts you unlock as you progress through a dungeon so that if you do quit, you can easily jump back in instead of going through it completely.
Sometimes, you just want to play a video game.

I don't know what I expected this game to look like but even with the improvements the art style is just so off putting for me. I tried twice to go through TP again and I'd love to with the Gamepad and a slightly better coat of paint but man just thinking about that opening bores me.

Still I think I will do it. I really want to refresh my perception of this game.

They already said they'll be some new changes to the game and after what they did with improving the tedious parts of Wind Waker in it's HD port, the opening being fixed in TP HD is more then likely one of those changes for this game.

It deducts rupees while walking then a lot of rupees per hit. When you run out of rupees, it's like walking around with iron boots so you can't even wear it to look fancy. I remember the side quests to unlock it being mediocre so it's all around just a waste.

I went in asked if the reservation could be transfered to the wii version if it was officially announced, they said yes. The day it was officially announced they said i couldnt do that and i'd have to put another $5 down and they'd consider the GC reservation canceled. I told them to **** off and walked out. If i handled the situation better i'm sure i would of got the money back... oh well.

So I pre-ordered the bundle last Friday for $79.99 fromm Best Buy Canada. Today it's $99.99. What the heck?
Internet reports said it was up on Amazon Canada briefly, also for $99.99. That's just too expensive.
Thankfully, my pre-order is apparently safely secured at the more reasonable price but I wouldn't be entirely surprised if it "accidentally" gets cancelled by Best Buy...

If Best Buy hasn't shot my $34.99 Persona 5 preorder in the face from a year and a half ago, they're not going to kill the Twilight Princess one. Worst comes to worst, my "price match" request on Amazon when BB had it for $80 goes through and you can snag it there with a preorder price guarantee.

Imagine if there was a Zelda amiibo line, and each version of Link in amiibo form unlocked a different option for a partner/guide/annoying pest? Ocarina Link unlocked Navi, Spirit Tracks unlocked Ghost Zelda, Wolf Link got Midna. Could be a fun way to flavor the game with a bit more than a new outfit without being "essential" since Nintendo doesn't want to do that.

Playing through Zip Lash really reminded me that the scanning times on these things basically fucks a lot of the potential up. If you could actually just tap the Amiibo and trigger the effect they might not be so useless.

I wish Nintendo wasn't so bad at not doing what seems obvious because that sounds like the clear choice for a Nintendo Amiibo game. As for Twilight Princess, I am excited for it since I only played the awful Wii version and gave up when I got to the under water part.

If Nintendo really wants to make something out of Amiibo they will do a Pokemon Amiibo game that ties the toys and cards to the game, instant Fort Knox money will never be an issue again for Nintendo.

Not to hate on it too much, but it looks like a really lazy port. The main problem is that they're making an "HD Remaster" of a game from two generations ago, on their current console, and all they did was replace some textures. It makes the low-polygon characters and assets like trees really stick out. It doesn't look any better (or much better) than the game looks running at 1080p on Dolphin emulator. Basically - this is what the Wii version *should* have looked like, had Nintendo not gimped out resolution.

Jebus, seriously? It dips below 30 frames per second? Wind Waker HD ran at 30 frames per second, but the game came out in 2013.

From everything I've read, Twilight Princess HD is a straight port which makes me wonder why this is a $60 even with that awesome Amiibo. I appreciate that the textures were redone, but Nintendo and Tantalus Interactive could have gone above and beyond to really make this rerelease special by tightening the game in places and cutting some of the fat (namely in that brutal tutorial at the beginning). I'm still keeping my pre-order, but it's at least a little disappointing. Nintendo did a really good job of making Wind Waker HD the definitive version of that game so it's a shame this didn't get the same treatment.

They did try to cut some of the fat.  You get more rupees at the beginning so you can buy everything and leave the village faster.  There's also only 12 insects you have to kill in each section instead of 16 so they did try to make some improvements.  They also give an item that helps you track Poe's now making that side quest less tedious as well.

Yes there's still pacing issues but that was always going to happen since the biggest problem is a lot of Twilight Princess padding is storyline and character event related making it a lot harder to truly change things.  When many involve cutscenes and important story information being told during them, cutting things becomes very tricky.  It's not like Wind Waker were it's biggest padding, the Triforce quest is much easier to edit like just lowering the amount of Rupees you pay Tingle and then putting the Triforce shards in chests now instead of the map leading to them.  In order to truly fix many of Twilight Princess fetchquests they'd have to pretty much remake certain sections of the game so the story would still work which Nintendo never does in Zelda ports/remasters.

What's not to get? It's a chore. You don't have to agree and from the sounds of it, you don't which is perfectly fine, but what people don't like about it is pretty simple.

It takes forever to just get the first real sword, and everything before that isn't particularly fun. Round up some goats. Find a cat. Retrieval a cradle. Go fishing. And so on. None of that is optional. That's all world building stuff and character introductions, and I get what the developers are going for, but it's so tedious. It's teaching you to do things you have to do again later anyway for heart pieces and whatnot. Let me deal with it then if I want. Why bog the beginning of the game down with things that aren't even mandatory later? It's a lot of handholding in a game that isn't that complicated. It may have taken something like seven years, but Nintendo acknowledged how boring the tutorials are by letting go on your merry way in less than 10 minutes in A Link Between Worlds.

I guess I never found it tedious. I saw it as a charming way to show the simplicity of life in the village as opposed to the very different nature of the world beyond. Most of the activities aren't applicable to the rest of Hyrule because they have no place there- however, there's plenty of parallels to be found.

I can understand how it might not gel with someone, but to say it ruins the opening of the game, or even the game itself, is a silly claim. In my opinion. I guess I'll never get that.

When you advertise adventure and slashing things with a sword, it's understandable that people will want to get to that as soon as possible.

Sorta like with Xenoblade X and the Skell, though Zelda has it worse since they are easier games to grasp.

I never took too much issue with the slow starts of Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, and Skyward Sword. If anything, I enjoyed the quaint and mundane beginning moments. It always makes me feel that I'm a bit of an oddball to hear so many complaints on the slow and tutorialized starts of 3D Zelda games

damn, I had forgotten about all that fishing crap and fetch quests at the start of the game. I am not sure if it is because of how much time since I played or if it didn't seem to bother me that much.

So, I did a live chat with Nintendo Customer Service and confirmed that the Soundtrack CD that was announced, BY REGGIE, as coming with pre-orders of the Twilight Princess HD Amiibo Bundle in North America, doesn't apply to ANY Canadian pre-orders. None. You can't get it in Canada no matter which retailer you order from.
I have expressed my displeasure with Nintendo for this. It has been duly noted, I assume. I encourage my other Canadian brothers and sisters (and those in solidarity with us) to similarly express their displeasure with this oversight for us poor Canadian souls.
Thanks for your time and attention.

I think people treat the dowsing segments a bit unfairly, as they're really supposed to help you search for brief periods of time and not extended ones. You simply should not keep that thing open any longer than when you first hone in on the object you're seeking. Anyone who felt "forced" to keep dowsing mode open any longer is A) not really taking advantage of the rest of the movement features of the game and/or B) unaware that there might be enemies nearby.

I liked the intro from a story standpoint, it made Link feel more like a person by showing a more average life before taking on the role of a hero. It could probably stand to be shorter though as it did drag on a bit, but it wasn't that big of a deal to me. I found the collection segments with the wolf more boring and tedious than the opening.

The intro was overlong, yes, but the true annoyance for me were those kids (Malo and gang).  They were constantly talking and swooning and getting captured.  I really hated that Ilia (or whatever her name was) was such an integral part of the story.  I just couldn't get into it.

Overall, I loved Twilight Princess, especially the last half of the game with all the cool dungeons. I agree with most here, though, that there doesn't seem to be anything enticing that the HD remake adds for $60.

Jebus, seriously? It dips below 30 frames per second? Wind Waker HD ran at 30 frames per second, but the game came out in 2013.

This disappoints me a great deal. The one Zelda game I was really hoping for a re-release with decent controls is the one they cheap out on and ruin. I was expecting solid 30fps at the very minimum. I was optimistically hoping for a nice 60fps port. Evidently they haven't done that. To be honest I'd have rather had SD at 60fps and decent controls. Or even 720p textures etc.

How can they mess up a 10(?) year old game one far superior hardware so badly? Is this going to be another Arkham Knight?

Tantalus was probably given a very short timeframe to get this port ready, which sucks because they've been proven to at least handle Wii U ports well. How many chances has a non-Japanese dev been given to port a Nintendo developed game?

I think it's pretty clear that TP HD is a rush job.  The Zelda WiiU delay coupled with the scant release schedule and warm reception of WW HD made it a viable option.  This is probably why we're not seeing as many gameplay improvements.

Are we counting Retro Studios and Monolith Software? If so, Monster Games' port of Donkey Kong Country Returns and Xenoblade Chronicles are the only ones I can think of.

Nintendo and Tantalus Media still missed the window for when Twilight Princess HD should have been released. Wii U's holiday was brutal.

The game received the same improvements Wind Waker did.  Both games just edit what they can to better streamline them but leave some of the biggest flaws still there because they'd have to remake certain sections of the game to truly fix them.  Wind Waker just looks better because it was way more deeply flawed at the basic gameplay level, (seriously, the sailing controls were just complete **** in the original) which made these things easier to fix.  Wind Wakers biggest flaw, lack of dungeons is still there as well as the fact the dungeons in the game are still subpar when compared to other Zelda's since the original version of Wind Waker was incredibly rushed and unfinished.

He's probably referring to having to change wind direction which was a massive pain in the ****. The Swift Sail changed Wind Waker exponentially. The game was just infinitely easier to play after getting it. Had Nintendo gone the extra mile and created a new dungeon or two from scratch just for the port, Wind Waker HD would have been perfect.

But you don't ever have to change direction when sailing. Hell, you have 90 degrees of maneuverability no matter what direction you choose to change the wind.

I agree.  I just wished they hadn't hidden the swift sail behind that auction mini-game. It should have been a more obvious upgrade. By the time I bought the game, I actually forgot how to get it and had to look it up online.

But you don't ever have to change direction when sailing. Hell, you have 90 degrees of maneuverability no matter what direction you choose to change the wind.

True, but Swift Sail was great for Tri-Force shards and finding all the fish to fill in the map.  I actually quite enjoyed these segments this time around...just freely circling the islands looking for the fish, treasure, etc.

Yep, the wind direction for sailing in the original were just terrible.  Especially when trying to 100% the game, having to constantly stop and change the direction of the wind to sail at full speed in a different direction got old very fast.  Basically the sailing mechanics in the original version of Wind Waker were like if when riding Epona in Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess, you have to stop and play her song every time you wanted her to run in a different direction at full speed.  That would have been considered unexceptable in those game and should be in Wind Waker as well.

Just by fixing that one mistake, Wind Waker HD almost became a new game for me.

If you were just going to go from one island to another, the wind direction wasn't an issue. If you wanted to explore though, it became tedious. The faster sailing though was the better improvement, the original boat speed was just so sloooooooow. However, if their claim that it couldn't have been faster because of system load times is true, I guess it's more forgivable than the wind direction thing.

However, they should have just given you the Swift Sail when you get the regular sail. They don't really make it obvious where the item is, and I may not have gotten it at all if I didn't know it was in the game and looked up where it was.

Got mine today. I'm really surprised how nice everything is. Very nice art plastered over box and the amiibo box. The Amiibo is WONDERFUL!! I actually feel kind of bad for having to take it out of the box. Like really bad.

The game isn't as blurry as before and some of the colors pop out better. Some of it shows it was a Gamecube game, but otherwise this is a more beautiful version of an already beautiful game.

The amiibo isn't pay2win. You can't reach the end of the Trial of Shadows until a certain point. It just throws you out after so many floors depending on your progress. So no you can't cheat the Golden Bug quest. So I kind of regret using the amiibo for that....

Also the opening was like 2 hours for me. By opening I mean from the start -> Forest Dungeon entrance. Didn't drag that bad at all. Nothing like Skyward Sword. So the pacing is still pretty good I think...

Note: The only fps drop I've noticed is when you fight King Bulbin in Kakariko Gorge and you ride through the water puddles. And that was only in that instance.

Bad News: Off-screen play will cause massive fps drop to play on the gamepad, especially around Lake Hylia.

Good News: You can switch between wolf and human by touching a symbol on the gamepad. Which is very convenient. Also they switched the rupee bag thresholds around. You have a bigger starting wallet (500) and the first upgrade goes up to 1000 instead of 600.

I think Skyward Sword benefits from Skyloft being quite large and having a lot of character(s). It certainly feels more alive than Ordon Village and there's lots more to explore. The Knight Academy has sidequests, the characters walking around town (and in houses) are much more varied, and I think Skyward Sword's opening moments are more interesting. Instead of making you feel helpless as a Wolf, they give you a lot of the tools you'll need to start exploring immediately and let you go off and adventure. It also helps that the surface world's design is very dungeon like.
