Nintendo Gaming / Wind Waker
« on: April 01, 2008, 04:50:18 PM »
Let me set the record straight.  I really tried to like Wind Waker.  I really did.  First long trip with my wife was to pick up Wind Waker.  Its a cute story but thats beside the point.

I think the game was great in many many ways BUT the game did not take advantage of the excellent combat system and that stupid stupid stupid ocean.  Way to much of it.  If you wanted to pop out and kill some baddies it was just not possible.  In fact some of my complaints with WW went over to TP.  If they remake the game or make a sequel I'll probably buy it hoping that the game live up to its potential.

If I get some free time I'll try to run through all of it again but, no promises.

Nintendo Gaming / SSBB Nitpick thread
« on: March 10, 2008, 09:40:50 AM »
I figure I make a thread for these things.  As I play,Pro666, I'll find more things I think they should have done a little differently.  This is sort of a place holder I only have a few right now.

  • Unlocking more settings for matches that should have come standard
  • My music putting all new music to the almost lowest setting instead of the middle when you recieve it
  • Not be able to outright select the music at stage select time or access My Music (There may be a way and its still locked)
  • No Online Co-op Events (or I haven't found it yet)
  • Never showing the "I am saving" icon like on Melee (We lost some data at the event because of a Green Screen of death so I'm a little confused where it saves)
  • Cellphone style name entry on everything

Remember these are nitpicks we are all saying that the game is excellent but sort of confused by these omissions or anomalies.

The non-funhouse version of this thread.  So with the new forums you can go back and see every post you've ever made.  My first was a quite long...  But this one I liked:

Three Games for the Fans who look to the sky,
Seven for the doubters in there hall of specs.
Nine for the Non-Gamers who are doomed to try,
One for Miyamoto on his Pipe throne
In the Land of Nintendo where the Plumber lie.
One Game to show them all how it's done, One Game to find them,
One Game to bring them all and in the console bind them
In the Land of Nintendo where the Plumber lie.

Oh and to keep on topic, sorry about the double post, the new feature of the Revolution is....  A place to keep your Tea warm.   <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> That's right.  You heard it here first.  Using complicated cooling features and the heat from the Triforce of Processors it will keep your tea or Coffee, we're equal oppurtunity, warm.

A little off though It could work...

Quote
While waiting in line for his PS3, which he preoredered to boot, Timmy notices something.
Something shiny, something white.
Looks cool and comforting.
He just wants to hold it.
Play with it.
Love it.
Look it's right by him.
He wouldn't lose his place in line.
So why not play?
"You know this is fun," thought Timmy as he prepared a virtual meal.
Then the line moves on.
"Here is your PS3 Timmy, enjoy."
Dun dum dee dun~.  Timmy has Acquired a PS3.  (One of the lucky few who did)
Timmy gets home and hooks it up.
The graphics are wonderful.
The gameplay is tired.
The Online not there.
Staring at his boomerang Timmy declares, "This will do to fill my fix for a while but when it comes out I will sell it and by my glimmer"
Poor Timmy was hooked by it's lucious curves and sleek exterior.
It had him in a thrawl.
It was all he could think about at night.
Even when he was playing the PS3 he was thinking of the other.
Soon the day came and the darkness disappeared.
Timmy then declared, "The day is here, the darkness is gone.  PS3 was swell but this is more fun."
This points if you can find the thread...

The original has funny pictures but it's to small to read and to big of an image if scanned.

General Gaming / Folklore
« on: August 25, 2007, 04:55:09 AM »
The special preview demo is up on PSN for everyone who has a PS3.  I played totally through it.  It seems interesting to say the least. As I mailed Pale, to me it seems like a brawler with Kameoish attacking, or at least what I gather from the description of that game, and interactive soul wrangling.  It’s sort of cool.

You start out with three "Folks" (aka Creatures, enemies, etc.).  Normally 2 attack and 1 defense.  You then use these guys to form an attack set based off of their abilities.  The abilities vary from generally useful to niche.  Like there is one in the demo who shoots bubbles.  Against normal enemies it’s got a short range and doesn't do much damage but, it’s the only thing that will attack flying you have that early.  You can quickly switch between the set you have equipped by pressing L2 and then assigning new Folks to each one of the face buttons.  For some creatures, especially bosses, you have to use a certain one or combination of ones.  Your not left in the dark on this.

The game has items you can find.  Some of these help your life, some of them are things you collect to unlock "Karmas" (aka Abilities, Levels, etc.) on your Folks (which in turn gives them new abilities, enhancements, or lower there cost to use).  Another of these items are picture books, and that's exactly what they are.  The pictures in the books help show how to defeat some of the more complicated enemies.  If you can't seem to get a Folk to show a blue soul, which means your actually hurting it, then consult the book.  Talking about souls.

As I mentioned above souls have a color.  In the demo there is three colors and each are a different state.  When you see a blue soul that means your attack is doing damage.  A red soul means its time to capture the Folk.  This is how you augment your arsenal and permanently get rid of an enemy.   To initiate capture you press the R1 button.  As of yet I found three types of captures and they all use motion control:

Simple Capture:
  • Look there is a red soul lock on (This one can automatically lock on to multiple souls)
  • Flick the SixAxis up and jerk that soul from its current occupant
    Time Capture:
  • Look there is a red soul lock on
  • Hey wait a minute a gauge showed up and the soul turned green (The last of the three states); what should I do?
  • Wait till the soul turns red and jerk up.  This will fill the gauge on the bottom till...
  • Soul turns and stays red, time to jerk up to finish capture
    Beat Capture:
  • Look there is a red soul lock on
  • Wait the soul is bluish, with a gauge, and seems to be fighting me; we can't have that can we?  Time to knock it around some.
  • Fling the Sixaxis left and then right and then left.  Beating the soul into the ground until it turns red in the middle.
  • Jerk up to wrangle it in.

While this is engaging and a welcome edition that reels you in, it becomes painfully clear that Sony could have used a more sensitive motion sensor when doing the Beat style of capture.  Which makes it my least favorite even though it is the most visceral.  I also believe that this process could have had more immersion with some rumble added.   Here’s hoping that the rumor is true the rumble is coming back and they’ll be an update for this game to use it, while I’m dreaming I like the Batarang back as well.

All and all I did leave a few things out that I hint at for you to find on your own.  I hope that I have enabled you to download the demo and give it a whirl.  I won’t be insulted if it’s not your cup of tea.  Just so you know it clocks in at 1.1 Gig and some change worth of download.  At this rate I might just have to considering swapping my harddrive for a bigger one…  Also, since you’re on the PSN anyway, pick up the Wall-E Trailer .

    General Chat / Tag Renewal
    « on: August 06, 2007, 07:21:03 AM »
Hello everyone.  Time for my newest outrage in life.  As everyone knows I'm unemployed and everthing hit this month.  Car insurance, tag renewal, normal bill, 6 months ago doctor bill, etc.  Fine all those I was pretty much ready for except for the tag renewal.  See I had moved at the beginning of the year but I didn't think I was hear long enough to be considered a citizen of the county.  Well I guess I suddenly have.  Why does this matter?  Well Dickson: $84 to renew tags.  Rest of Tennessee: $24-55.

This always seems to happen I have everything taken care of and bang.  Something new out of the blue comes and rips it all down.

I was just wondering if 85 dollars was par normal for everywhere else or if I'm just being gouged.  I found out the tax is suppose to go to "Schools and Highways."  The schools better be excellent because the roads around here stink compared to the rest of Tennessee.  I've already called around trying to find out more specifics.  I like to know exactly why I'm being bamboozled.

    General Gaming / PS3 Controller
    « on: July 30, 2007, 04:14:11 AM »
As all probably know by know I have recently purchased a PS3.  I've been playing the snot out of it getting caught up on PS2 games and Demos.  I'm Unemployed right now so I tend to have a lot of time on my hands once I go through looking at all the job postings.  This has led to me using the Dual Shock style PS3 controller more then I ever used the PS2's controller, I was a Cuber.  Thus my right hand started hurting sort of weird stemming from my thumb.  I need to find a more ergonomic controller it seems.

I've seen this, PS360 but I have neither the skills nor the capital to pull that off.  Though I'll probably try once I'm gainfully employed.

Though their just doesn't seem to be to much going for it that I could fine.  On the flipside since at the moment I'm really only playing PS2 games I could get oneof the adapters and use a PS2 controller. (Their is one shaped in the form of the Batarang PS3 controller, which I hope they do release eventually even if its a collector run.  I had one similar to that for the N64 and it was comfortable.)  The Logitec Chillstream looks a little bit heftier and a little more ergonomic.  Anyways I thought I see if anyone has any suggestions.

General Chat / Friendly Advice, Anyone?
    « on: July 26, 2007, 08:52:14 AM »
Ok so heres the problem.  Last fall I was suppose to graduate but I didn't.  I still had to move and had no job their.  A friend of mine convinced his Mom to let me work under her.  Which was great.  It was part time and as long as she had work.  Which worked for me.  I knew I could possible be let go any week which was fine.  It was work and it paid well.

During the 6 months I worked under his Mom things seem to be fine.  I was doing what I was told and we got along fine.  Well then the whole thing with the place in San Diego happened, had a thread about this but I can't find it.  It was also at this time that the company which his Mom worked for decide to fire her out of the blue, she had been their since the start about 15 years.  Then had me come in the next few days to help them transition to the contractors.  At this point I had no job period so of course I worked the last few days.  It made me eligible for Unemployment and would hopefully make it more appealing for someone else to hire me.

My friend on the other hand disagreed with my decision.  Which I can see where he is coming from because his mom devoted a lot of her life to the company.  Now he won't talk with me.  What really stinks is before all this I'm sure he be my best reference.  I haven't been trying to push the subject and we live far enough away that we never bump into each other, different towns.  I've tried to get a hold of him to talk things out.  Though their is no response and I don't know what to say.

What do you guys say?  Do you think I was in the right here or should I have stormed out in protest maybe saving my friendship.

It just seemed like I had much more to lose by not working those 2 days then I had to gain.  Just need someone elses opinion.

Nintendo Gaming / Concept: Brass Band
    « on: July 13, 2007, 09:36:21 AM »
I just thought this this morning and thought I share.  Here we go.

We are getting everything to do with rock but what about other forms of music?  This is where my concept comes in.  Brass Band.

    Why Brass?
Simply put with a Three to five button peripheral you can simulate a variety of instruments relatively easily.

    Which instruments?
Tuba, Trumpet, Baritone, Euphonium, Sousaphone, Valve Trombone, French Horn (loosely interpreted), and the many variations of all of them.  I'm sure I even forgot some.

    Why?
I think it be fun.  Especially since I love playing Tuba but can't afford one.

How would the main game work?
In the main game mode it would work one of three ways depending on the peripherals abilities.

    1)  As the notes go across you press the appropriate keys.  These are regular music notes with the key given and like in the instruments preferred cleft unless you in British Brass Band Mode then its all treble.
    2)  Much like Guitar Hero and kin instead of giving the proper notes the keys would be given instead.  So you may have to hit rb, ry, r , ry, y with indicator where you should be open somehow.
    3)   Either one of the other ones but it gauges your airflow through the peripheral to tell how loud and what type of note you are playing, not pitch wise just staccato and like.

    Thats pretty much it.

    Are their other modes?
Of course.  Their are two that I am very excited by the concept of.

    1) Real Instrument play
In this mode you clip a microphone or use a microphone equipped Mute to a real instrument.  Then using the pitch technology used for singing games you play along through the different parts.  You would choose which instrument you are using before hand and the appropriate part would be shown.  Their would also be a warm up part for tuning the mike and you should always warm-up first.  Plus practice modes for working on scales and fundamentals.  Hopefully also showing the appropriate fingerings when desired.

    2) Conductor mode
Using the Wiimote you conduct a variety of Brass Bands all by yourself learning the different concepts behind directing and varying parts of music.

    What about Multiplayer?
Of course their would be a coop and competitive mode for all the modes except Conductor.  Each player would have their own individual part to follow.  In edition to that their be a full ensemble mode.  In this mode 1 player will be the conductor.  His job is to conduct a piece of music and the other players jobs are to follow him.  The conductor will have the ability to decide how soft or loud, fast or slow they would like the music to be.  Each player will be graded on how well they followed the conductor and the conductor would be scored on how well their interpretation followed the music and whether they kept to accepted forms of conducting.

Their you have it.  Brass Band.  A game that could truly benefit from a good sound system and music recordings.  Having a mighty peripheral that could easily be used in a varieties of arrangements.

General Chat / Help! Gothic Lolita
    « on: July 01, 2007, 08:47:21 AM »
    Hello everyone,

This is going to sound weird but my sister has a contest going on and she would like me to enter.  The rules are it must have:
  • Her in Gothic Lolita type attire
  • Her Ghost Characters
  • In a Graveyard
  • At Night

I have an idea what I want to do but Gothic Lolita is not my thing so I have no idea really what that entails.  I was wondering if anyone have a good place or pics for reference?

    Edit:
Upon a little more research the style is cute on animated people but very very hard to pull off on real people.

General Gaming / PSP Processor is getting unlocked
    « on: June 27, 2007, 06:33:21 AM »
Yep, they are taking away the restriction soon.  You know what that means right?  The PSP will now have more raw horsepower then the PS2...  Though this will probably tank the battery.  Meaning that the rumor of a new revision is probably true to compensate.

Also just for everyone to know the rest of the raw numbers I could find are comparable.  With the screen res being 480x272 we may even see games that look better then what they could on the PS2.  Irony all over.

    93
    Hello all.
For everyone whose been keeping track you know I was going to be moving to San Diego to start a new Job in my field on July 16.  Welp, theirs been a hitch.

    8:00AM
Larry, from United Van Lines, comes and quotes me a price to move my stuff to San Diego.

    9:48AM
I send the amount on to the company so they now how much because they are trying to go for a corporate contract and so they can tell other relocation employees.

    10:59AM
My friend whose Mom I'm currently doing some work for until I get a "real job" calls me up.  I was going to call him up anyway to see if he wanted to meet up to watch FlugTag.  I thought that was why he was calling.  I mentioned that I was about to call him and asked about FlugTag.  He didn't call for that.  It seems that his Mom, my boss, was let go of to put it nicely.   This sort of came from left field.  I could see her quitting before they would fire her and we were in the middle of an important update.  At this point I'm wondering if I was out of work but rationed that since I was only going to be their for another week it be ok if I didn't.

    11:04AM
Called my wife with the news and stated that I'll just go to work tomorrow like I was suppose and see how things work out.

11:55AM (Biggest Reason for all this.)
I recieve a call from my future employer.  Sort of unexpected.  The lady that helps with the relocation is calling me as a "Future Fellow Employee"(FFE).  She was wondering if I "was 100% about the job" and knew "what I was getting myself into."  I went on to tell her what I beleived I was getting myself into and she said that I grasped what it would be.  She then goes on to say that from the e-mails and like that it seemed I still had some doubts.  (Of course I have some doubts.  I don't know exactly what I be doing and I be moving 2000 miles.  Who wouldn't? Even if they were right next door the best I could be is 80% sure and 75% if I have to move out-of-state.)  That they were worried that I have a sense of entitlement, (I can sort of see that because I'm just watching out so I don't get taken advantage of like I regular seem to.  I know what people from my graduating year and +/-1 are being offered and the relocation they are getting.  In actuality most are getting full or close to full relocation with things like a room for a week to help you find an apartment.  What they afford for a move that far was really low but I did accept it.), they are also worried that I won't give 110%*, and that I may not fit with the culture (when the offer was made everyone thought I be a great fit, even I think I fit in well their culture wise).  She then keeps drilling me about how I feel about going out there and lets me know that she can't find apartments for people and like.  I tell her, in nicer terms, that I know that and did not expect her to.  I just expect a, "Hey, thats a nice area" or "Hey, avoid that."   Which is funny because earlier in the conversation she mentions that she is somewhat worried because I haven't been e-mailing her very much for the past little while.  By the end she proceeds to tell me that recently they have had to let go of New highers within the first 2 weeks because they have not produced enough or were negative.  Also that as part of the training you are told that 90% of the people in the room will not be working their in a year.  (Thats totally different then what they told me at interview, where they said that they only lost about 10% of new hires.)  She wants me to think about it and give her a call at 2PM tomorrow.

    12:11PM
I call my Wife with the news and she is somewhat upset because she had already turned in her resignation.

    12:30PM
I call my Dad and get his opinion on it.  He is sort of wary about me going out there after that conversation but says that either decision I make will be a good one.

    While Talking with Dad:
Wife calls 3 times and my current job calls once.
I check my messages afterwards and find out that the Head of Finances(HoF) would like to talk with me and expects to hear back from me in a few minutes. (I don't work Tuesday and Thursday.  I'm parttime 20 hours a week.)

    1:35PM
I call my wife first and find out that she can keep her job with little difficulty.

    1:37PM
I call the HoF.  He is not in and I leave a message apologizing for not being able to answer his call while talking with my Dad, give him my number, and tell him that he has priority over any of my other calls.  I also note that if he chooses not to call back I will see him tomorrow at work.

    ~1:47PM
    Start this post...

So it looks like I'll probably not be going to San Diego but I wanted to hear everyone elses opinion.  While talking with my Dad I realized that I probably couldn't give 100% to a company that didn't believe in me even a little from the start.  That coupled with them probably putting me under a microscope so even if I performed better then the other candidates I may still get axed... I just don't know about that.  What would everyone else do in a similar situation?

*Their is only 1 way to give a "110%".  If you love what you are doing and be doing it anyway whether you were paid or not, 100%.  If your really believe in the company you work for and it believes in you, 100%.  Put those two together and you get 110%.
