It was possible to slide and rotate pieces into place on the stack, but the window of opportunity was so small that it required a bit of skill to actually do it at high levels.  If you can take a two or three second breather after any piece falls to plan your next move, where's the challenge?  I wouldn't even mind the feature being in the game for those who like it if I could turn it off, but it appears that's not an option.

Hardly, that first one of his is an abomination. The second one is better but awkward and the one directly above this is even worse!

Something here's terribly wrong,
Your lines are too short or too long,
Try reading out loud,
In front of a crowd,
And hopefully then they'll be strong.

Oh, I agree they're terrible, but the lines are the right length.  There's a lot of leeway in limerick writing, but generally, the a lines should be three feet of three syllables, and the b lines should be two feet of three syllables.  Usually, the stress is on the middle syllable of each foot, but it can be on the last, too.  It's also acceptable to drop either the leading or ending weak syllable on a line, as you demonstrated.

It can be difficult to tell which syllables are meant to be stressed when reading a limerick, and that's probably the biggest reason my own don't sound off to me, but they do to you.

keep post on topic
write a haiku in it, too
even though it sucks.

Heh  heh.  Sorry.  Allow me to apologize in limerick form, as well.

There once was a man from West Texas
Whose words stung his cohort like hexes.
No ownage intended,
Now let's be befriended.
Please don't kick me hard in the plexus.

Is it bad that I'm enjoying this thread so much?  It probably is.

You're one to talk, TMW.
That one was worse, and I mean it, too.
You need to be smarter
Since meter's much harder
Than rhyming, and that's never untrue.

A proper lim'rick should be jokey.
But most just turn out to be hokey.
They should end with a twist,
But that point's always missed
'Cause most of our brains are too pokey.

I didn't even look at the pictures.  I hate the infinite spin in Tetris Worlds already.  While I'd love to try it before passing judgement, that would require buying it, unfortunately.

Nitro was the codename.  I remember reading rumors about a project called Nitro long before the DS was revealed.  It is odd that Nintendo doesn't release as much information about their handhelds under codenames as they do about their home consoles.  I remember reading tons about Project Reality, Dolphin, and now Revolution before learning the official names.  That wasn't the case with Atlantis and Nitro.

Ooh, I think you just stumbled across the Revolution's real name: The Nintendo Innuendo.

I find the touch screen control in Animal Crossing annoying, personally.  I like using the stylus for just about everything in the game except moving.  I just wish it was possible to smack people with the net without using the touch screen.  Anyway, I hope (and I think it's reasonable to expect) that d-pad controls will exist in Phantom Hourglass.  I do like that doing a spin attack is a simple matter of encircling Link, though.  It's too hard to do a quick circle on the d-pad.

The complaints about the name remind me of the Penny Arcade comic about Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow.  The Legend of Zelda: Puppy Helmet, anyone?

And I was just kidding about the name needing to start with DS.  I actually think Phantom Hourglass is a good enough name, although it could use a The.  Or does it have a The, and everyone's just leaving it off for the sake of brevity?  I guess I'll find out when I finally have time to digest all this news over the weekend.  I haven't even seen the video yet.

Anyway, I don't think it's fair to say all of Nintendo's new ideas have been targeted at nongamers.  As for new IPs, I think it would be a liability to use an existing franchise in a game targeted at nongamers.  At the very least, there would be no benefit to it.  There is an obvious benefit in using existing franchises to sell new ideas to non-nongamers, on the other hand.

(I'm pretty sure the emoticon parsing issue is just in the preview.  I've been checking that, and it hasn't messed up quotes and such.  Let's test:  gimmick)

No, the change to digital over-the-air broadcasts is mandated by law, not high definition.  Not that a little fact like that would stop all the electronics manufacturers from capitalizing on the confusion to sell expensive new HDTV sets.

Of course, that doesn't change the fact that HDTV will be the standard eventually, anyway.

Congratulations.  Kudos for sharing the prizes, too.  I have to take issue with your Pichu crack, though.  He's one of my favorite fighters.  Nothing is more emasculating than losing to Pichu, and I use that to my advantage whenever a certain friend of mine wins too many times in a row.

I didn't mean for it to sound like I thought the DS's graphics were as good as the PSP's.  I was trying to use the parallel you drew to the DS to show that Nintendo isn't disparaging their own hardware now anymore than they did then.

And you brought up precisely the right point when you said they dodge the hardware capabilities question.  If the question didn't get asked, they wouldn't bring it up.  It seemed that you were implying that Nintendo is making a big deal about having weaker hardware, when it looks to me like they'd rather not mention it at all.

That's funny.  I could have sworn Nintendo was claiming that the Revolution's graphics will be comparable and that, just like with the DS, it was mostly forumgoers complaining that the graphics will be weak.

You don't recall Nintendo getting a kind of flower named Pikmin?  That was the most awesomest marketing ever!  (No, I don't believe that.)

As for Chibi Robo well I didn't buy it because it got creamed in reviews.  If a game isn't all that good then it doesn't deserve to sell anyway.

What reviews did you read?  According to gamerankings, Chibi Robo is at a respectable 76 percent.  The individual reviews vary quite a bit, with some scored quite high, which just shows that it's the kind of game that deserves a rental first.  I liked it a lot.  It was full of quirky humor and had a surprisingly touching story.

I've already found a picture of a bear that would work if I could add a party hat and maybe a wine glass or something.  Don't expect it to ever show up, though, given my lack of photoshop skill combined with extreme laziness.

And no, I'm not affiliated with the Care Bears in any way, although I have a vague memory of seeing them in a movie when I was very young.

So Nintendo's influence would have improved Rare's games, even though Nintendo's influence is part of the reason Rare's last Nintendo game sucked?

Another of Nintendo's influences on Rare was forcing them to make Disney licensed games when they didn't want to.

Yeah, I have to agree.  Right now Retro is still largely unproven.  Sure, Metroid Prime is great, but until they get the opportunity to work on something else for a change, it's hard to say how much of a difference Retro will make in the long run.  I'm hoping the promise they've shown so far bears fruit in other genres.  I especially hope that their developers don't chafe under the Metroid yoke and go Free Radical on us.

It's starting to look like what some people miss isn't anything to do with Rare exactly, but the British humour they put in their games.  All Nintendo needs to do is find another British developer that likes fart jokes and sexual innuendo (nudge nudge), and nobody will even remember Rare.
