Their reasons had nothing to do with the games themselves.

Factor 5 was in financial ruins and Nintendo was afraid that their development money would go towards paying the employees from other projects that had gone months without being paid. In other words, Nintendo money would go towards keeping the company afloat instead of actually developing the games it was intended for.

Oh yeah. I forgot about how they had so many money troubles. Sad and shameful end to a developer house that pumped out some pretty cool technical stuff.

Its a shame when employees don't get paid, but its not Nintendo's responsibility to pay the employees of some other company. If that's the reason they pulled funding, I can understand. Too bad for the employees, though.

All hardware is down this week

PSP is having shortages in Japan & 9 games in the Top 20

Wii is on life support... minus any actual support. (there are no new games next week while PSP gets 5)

But on the bright side, DQMJ 2 has a sudden increase of interest & 3DS won for the week*

*but only because there are PSP shortages in Japan right now... who would've predicted this?

Seriously... What a world we're in now where there is even a thing as a PSP shortage.

Its nice that the 3DS is outselling the PSP again finally, but its not good to know that this is only due to PSP shortages.

I seem to recall the DS not selling amazingly well for several months, if I remember correctly, mainly started picking up when the bigger titles were released for it (I want to say Mario Kart DS). Heck I remember right before the PSP launched how people were saying it was doomed. Handheld systems have never really sold like consoles do at launch.

Its been so long since the last home console launch that I forgot what they look like. Anyway, it's still early in the 3DS's life and I think it will take a year or two to see how things shake out.

It's not exactly surprising that PSP is doing well against the 3DS right now, though...at this point, it's a significantly cheaper alternative with a pretty good libary at this point.  I still haven't gotten one, but I've always wanted one in order to play old PS-era RPGs.

Looks like 3DS sold 3.61M by the end of March

Quote
Iwata addressed additional sales opportunities for the 3DS, saying that Nintendo would be releasing the system in China and developing countries as soon as preparations are made, possibly this year. Nintendo set a sales target of 16 million units for the 3DS this year. During the previous fiscal year, the system sold 3.61 million units, just shy of its original target of 4 million.

I guess sales weren't as bad as they seemed with all things considered.

So close! Hopefully Nintendo can take lessons from the 3DS launch for their next system launches. You can't roll out a system with little that must be played.

I think it was because it wasn't sold out with lines of people everywhere like the Wii launch and console launches in general.  People seemed to forget that it's a handheld.

Releasing it in China?  I wonder if it just means shipping over some Japanese units or if they will actually have Chinese boxes and language.

The system sold better than any of Nintendo's other handhelds at launch, so it did just fine. It's just that Nintendo produced a lot of them and didn't sell out all that stock. Considering its relatively high price tag and lack of any real killer app, I think it sold very well.

China is a growing market. They might still be considered "developing" but they're not far from developed really. It is wise for Nintendo to try and take advantage of that. Of course, piracy is a major issue there, but considering how well Nintendo designed the 3DS to ward off piracy it might not be a problem.

I know, I'm living there.  I'm curious because I might actually buy one depending on the region it uses.

Nice to see Kirby's Epic Yarn in that Wii list. I really like the game and hoped that it would do well for Nintendo.

I'm surprised that MS hasn't gone up substantially the last year.  This must not be taking into account Microsoft Gaming Studio because I'm fairly sure they were profitable before the XBox.  I'm surprised we didn't sea dip from 2009 to 2010 for Nintendo.  They make it sound that way.  Though if I was running a company having that much profits would make me wonder if I'm doing enough R&D or if maybe I should diversify because it seems bubblish.

Be nice to see this for shipped units...
