I pray that's what Nintendo thinks it is, rather than the CoD crowd.

God, I hate Western RPGs.

What is a "hardcore" gamer? Do they like ultra-violent games that feature healthy online communities (maybe healthy isn't the right word for it)? Or is a hardcore gamer someone who enjoys a damn good immersive, meaty gaming experience? Remember when it used to be the latter and not the former?

Interesting informed speculation at Beyond3D: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?p=1637040#post1637040
Mind explaining this in layman's terms? All I got from it is that it's trying to be as port-friendly as possible, though I don't understand the reasoning for bringing this up...

3455
Huh. I still think that would be just as dumb as the original title- even less-recognizable.

TalkBack / Re: CoroCoro Reveals New Pokémon Black and White 2 Details
« on: April 13, 2012, 11:32:35 AM »
^I would love to be wrong as well. New Pokemon would make this game much more desireable, and would justify the idea that Black and White are supposed to reinvent Pokemon.

My main problem with this game in general is that it's so formulaic. Sure, they've changed the map a bit, but that's still not the kind of quality we saw from Gold and Silver, which were much more sequel-y in concept. With the amount of development time that went into this game, I highly doubt there's many mechanic changes going on. When I imagined a fully-realized Pokemon sequel, I expected a lot more content than a couple new towns.

Pokemon's never been about story for me, and I have no qualms admitting Black and White's stories didn't interest me one bit. I cared very little for the linearity in those games, not only in gameplay but also in the environments. The "sprawling" city we got was three streets. The illusion of space was given to us but not the actual thing itself. That really hurt the game to me, and I would very much appreciate a second go around with this game, IF it was higher quality. But it looks like more of the same.

3457
I disagree. A game where Mii's invade the Mushroom Kingdom would be AWESOME and meta. There's so much potential to be really clever there.

However, I highly doubt it's going to happen.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: E3 2012 Predictions

I refuse to believe that an F-Zero game will be announced, especially with Miyamoto talkign about how they haven't even thought about it yet.

Star Fox is the best bet for Retro's new game.

3459
Right... and xBox Live avatars are totally realistic. An Avatar should be a simplistic way of identifying someone. Sure, some more customization options and accessories would be nice, especially adding graphics to bodies and other special wear would be nice. But Miis represent simplicity and easy identification, plus modification that's accessible to all ages.

3460
Also, I dunno... I think having a console on-par with Microsoft and Sony's current gen for 300 bucks isn't really that bad of an investment. It's still gonna have good online, and the games will be pretty- and it won't be as much of a price commitment as the other two current gen consoles- the 360 less so. And it will just have good, solid games made by Nintendo, and hopefully good third party stuff too.

Whether we like it or not, everyone has to admit that Nintendo makes a specific type of gaming experience- they make damn good games that are about high quality and imagination. That's the truth. That's why I buy them. That's why I continue to buy them, and that's why I enjoyed the Wii so much- they committed and worked with an idea, and they exploited it to the max. They sold that console on that idea. But really, games like Mario, Zelda, Monster Hunter, Xenoblade, and Dragon Quest, even- they simply work better on a Nintendo console because that's where developers get to let imagination, color, and vivacity come to life. (Mind you, some games are dark and gritty on Nintendo consoles, but they too are unique, like Madworld and No More Heroes).

I believe that the Wii U is going to drive a very different concept into people- I think the Wii U's gimmick is really going to be the internet. How Nintendo deals with DLC and virtual purchases and implementing this crazy internet into our gaming experience. The tablet kind of enforces that, because it's a tool for both playing and communicating your commands in ways that you can't with just face buttons and analog sticks. I mean, for more traditional games I think it will be more of a single-player gameplay enhancer, like being a world map or a use as a place to control your character's actions (but for HD level graphics). But loading out, issuing commands, and communicating with other players is going to be perfect for this system, and that's why I think we've heard rumors of MMO's on this console. I think it will just work for hotkeying and commune like in World of Warcraft, and I think it could greatly enhance games like Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (in its more traditional GC-esque form), Monster Hunter, and even Pokemon. Because players don't really play in the same room anymore- I think Nintendo's beginning to realize that- but I think that they'll continue to use Wiimotes for local co-op, still. I think the tablet will be used in congruence with Wiimotes for local play, actually, as we've seen with games like Find Mii, etc.

But the additional abilities of being a NFC, app download (specifically ebooks and board games, smart move), and some independent functions for the controller also make it widely appealing to households as a family device. I think that's how the Wii U may be an attempt to satiate both the casual and hardcore.

In other words, I think that the Wii U has plenty going for it, in concept. A lot of game developers are going to want to work on the system for what it can do for gaming- even more will if the device proves more powerful than current gen offerings, but even if that's not true, it will still have developers. Because without the Wii, a lot of cool games wouldn't have seen the light of day- and that will be the same with this console.

And Nintendo will keep standards high with their own titles. I think that's the fantastic thing about Nintendo, really- they partly maintain a high quality for their system with their own releases and show people how good it can really be. That's why I think Pikmin 3 might come out later than launch to make way for a Nintendo title that really showcases the Wii U's possibility... OR it will do so itself, if it can. Which it could.

So... I guess what I'm saying is... uh... Nintendo's cool? That, and "relax, everybody". I think we're forgetting that nothing about the actual content and fantastic experience is going to change with this new console- and nothing's going to change with the developers we see jumping on board with the system- be they new or old, they will exist. They will continue to create games that work on Nintendo consoles- games like Mutant Mudds and Mighty Switch Force and Xenoblade Chronicles and Ivy the Kiwi and Zelda and Mario.  I mean, it takes some thinking, but when you really take Nintendo's words to heart- "it's all about the play experience," you have to think back at how they choose what they think they can work with the best. We all know how Nintendo made the Wii a successful device- motion control and casual appeal. But when you think of why the Gamecube was swell, it was because Nintedo loved working with the improved graphics- and they expanded on such ideas as having a handheld device like the GBA attach and enhance. The N64 was all about taking games into 3D and implementing all those different controller options- rumble packs, memory, gameboy cartridges. So I think we're just seeing a system that catches itself up with what's out there currently and will show us how Nintendo quality and innovation apply to what they've created- a controller that's going to be a great home device for the family as well as an asset to online gaming and control methods.

That blog post practically wrote itself.

3461
Or the statement could have easily been more of a PR mistake.

I'm convinced that that is exactly what this is. If Nintendo had just said "Nintendo does not comment on rumors and speculation." like they always do I think they could have avoided a lot of this.
Truth.

I'd rather pick and choose, truthfully.

3463
Nintendo's just on their own time-table. They don't care what other developers are doing, they'll take their sweet time in crafting whatever they want for release.

I am glad that they have acknowledged online gaming as a whole, though.

3464
Rumors lead to speculation.

Speculation leads to fear.

Fear leads to anger.

Anger leads to hatred.

Hatred leads to the Dark Side.

All that we have been discussing is, in fact, speculation. You can pick and choose what rumors you want to believe in, but when it all comes down to it, this is a forum about Nintendo discussion. Hell, it's a forum about loving Nintendo. I came here to gush and be excited about this console. I'm excited, what else can I say? I want pretty Nintendo games, and I want reviewing websites to start treating Nintendo like it's not on a different level because of its poor graphical ability. I want to play online Nintendo games- I want to SEE how Nintendo makes online games. Those are the things I would like to talk about.

But this is what has currently been happening, and you can't blame people for getting up in arms about it. Rumors are something, and at a time when we've been hearing nothing solid about the Wii U, we'll take anything we can get.

3465
Sweet jebas, if this was true... This would change the friggin' Smogon tiers like crazy.

Personally, I'd welcome it. The Gen V Pokemon were weak anyway, this would make me like Gen V a LOT LOT LOT more.

3466
Then I don't care what the Wii U can do. As long as it gives me pretty graphics. I mean, nice online would be nice, but other than that... I'm not picky.

3467
I really don't think we're going to be seeing much of a graphical leap like there was from GC/xBox/PS2 to 360/PS3. It's just not going to happen. If it does, then game developers are going to have one hell of a time dealing with that.

3468
I really want to see Monolith be successful with Nintendo, while I haven't played it, Xenoblade sounds like one of the best RPGs around, not just on Wii. With the Pokemon name you know it would sell amazing, people could care less who developed it as long as it appears to be a mainline Pokemon game.
Xenoblade is, by far, the best RPG of the past decade. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about it. It easily surpasses the trash that Square Enix has put out in the past few years in terms of gameplay and story.

If Monolith had to make a Pokemon game, I'd be okay with a similar battle system to Xenoblade, but instead have the arts be the moves that Pokemon normally learn. That would be sweet. And those environments. They would be massive.

BACK to the real discussion. I just feel that, as a company, Nintendo has made a statement that gives me plenty of hope- that they want to reconnect with the hardcore audience. I think that is a bold, but earnest thing to say, and it at LEAST implies that they know where they stand in the gaming community nowadays. Now, they dominate the casual market, and I believe they aren't just going to throw that away, but if you think about the Nintendo Network and the work that's gone into that concept, you can tell that there is an effort being made.

Honestly, I truly hope that launch provides something that is integrated with the Nintendo Network, because that's going to be a driving point of the system. But also, I think that Nintendo isn't going to say a thing about their specs at all, for reasons I stated in the talkback of today's article. They don't want Sony or Microsoft capitalizing on that- they want those companies to be as threatened as possible and blow as many resources trying to outdo them as possible and win out in the end. That's my opinion, though. Take it as you will.

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo's (Non) Reaction to Wii U Rumours
« on: April 09, 2012, 01:11:51 PM »
Well said. Of course, you can't rule out the idea that, if Nintendo releases their specs to the public, that means their competition will have knowledge on how to exploit them and surpass them with their next-gen consoles. Nintendo may be playing it very safe, but it's also a very dangerous game.

People forget that esteemed developers have said positive things about the Wii U- there was no **** storm about those statements. However, anonymous rumors are the ones that get the most publicity. Who has more to lose- someone who comes out and says the console is better, or someone who keeps their identity under wraps and nails the ware from afar?

Just things to speculate upon.

3470
Mother of god...

3471
Right, because Duck Hunt was a hardcore experience that was totally not a casual tech demo at all.

Oh, wait.

I'm just gonna say this- Nintendo's been selling on underpowered tech for a while, now. They've made a ****-ton of money off of it, but they've lost the hardcore gamer. When they said this was a gaming device for YOU, they meant to reconcile the hardcore audience, to reconcile those who have been ready for Nintendo's franchises to leap into HD for a long time, now.

Whether or not the console is underpowered, I saw the HD Zelda demo. That is what I want. I will buy a Wii U if I get to play a game that pretty. That's all that really matters to me.

Honestly, I've never experienced a loading time on the Wii that's been too tedious- Brawl has had a couple instances of just taking a little bit, and one or two games like Sonic Unleashed and maybe Monster Hunter- but I've enjoyed good load times on just about everything.

I mean, if there's a competitive aspect to selling game units, then load times are going to be minimized as much as possible. But for now, with the current technology, load times are just something we'll have to deal with. I'm playing Xenoblade right now and sweet jeebas, that game has very little loading times.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Resident Evil 3ds!?!
« on: April 08, 2012, 12:28:52 AM »
I got this game a few days after launch, played the first two chapters, and lost interest- I just didn't know where it was going and I wasn't sure if it was my kind of game (it's my first real Resident Evil title). But I just restarted a couple of days ago and I'm having a blast- just finished up Chapter 5. I'm really enjoying the tightness of the combat, especially in the hallways (and that damn Rachel boss battle...), and I've mastered dodging and reloading on the fly. The story doesn't make a lick of sense to me but I honestly don't care because I'm having such a great time. For me, the tension is very fun and has me checking every corner for a new foe. After the first boss battle I became braced for some gritty combat and I'm now totally engrossed.

I haven't tried Raid Mode yet, but I'm excited to give it a whirl.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Super Smash Bros. WiiU (& 3DS)
« on: April 08, 2012, 12:11:46 AM »
I would hope that they do a tease for Smash Bros. this E3, after all, if they're going to mention it lightly last E3, the crowds are going to be hyped. If it's even like the silly Brawl video, it'll be A-okay with me. However, I doubt they'll have any of the character models ready by that point, so those brief bursts of gameplay we saw in the original Brawl video won't be happening.

3475
Wow.

I'm about four hours in- and this game has me effin' HOOKED. It took me about an hour to get a hang of the quest and battle systems... but damn, this game's delivering hardcore. Like, I got a little choked up already. I know I'm in this one for the long run.
