"I think one of the important elements of the Zelda series has always been that you feel like you're in the world doing the things that Link is doing and touching the things that link is touching. This time you'll be able to use the touch screen and actually touch those items and objects yourself."

It could work out, but I'm just stating the fact that there hasn't been really any game that has used this touch screen right yet (except Yoshi Touch & Go).  Mario 64 tried to use it to replace the analog stick.  Castlevania has some spell casting tacked on.  Metroid Hunters vanished into the abyss of space when it became obvious it needed another year of developement.

I don't know how the touch screen can work for a 2d Zelda.  With a 3d Zelda it could make for gimicky musical spells.

Edit:  You could use a series of drawings to create elemental effects.  Imagine there are four simple graphics for fire, ice, water, and earth.  You draw exactly where you want them in order to clear paths, make bridges, search for secrets, kill stuff, etc.

1) Metroid Hunters vanished into the abyss of space when it became obvious people couldn't shut up about online. I hope they're happy.
2) Don't Kirby and Meteos count for anything?
3) Who said Zelda DS is 2D? We know nothing about the game except "it's not Four Swords".

Edit: Actually, we do know something else about the game: it's been planned to take full advantage of the DS from day one, if I understood correctly. There was a very confusing quote about this that was never clarified.

I believe they should keep the portable Zelda games 2d.  And what is wrong with the four sword as a cool secret weapon.

I agree that there should still be 2D zelda's...if they want to make two totally seperate games, one 2D and one 3D then I guess I don't care, but I still want my 2D zelda fix.

I agree, 2d Zelda is so much better than 3d Zelda it'd be a shame if they were to kill off the 2d versions.

I think it should be 2D, but with a 3D engine, e.g. Super Smash Brothers. What advantage would it give you? Absolutely nothing, but we have 3D hardware, why not use it? >_>

"The only person who'd find something wrong with this is Ian"

I've already voiced my concern over lever pulling so there's no point in arguing about it.

I'm thinking of how the controls could work.  If you're using the touchscreen then you're left with a d-pad and a shoulder button (or the face buttons as a d-pad).  And then there's still start and select or course.  Link's Awakening managed to pull off complexity and detail comparable to A Link to the Past using only two action buttons and the d-pad for movement plus start and select to bring up the menu.  Logically that's what we have here only one of the buttons is replaced with the touchscreen.  The touchscreen would work best for items like the boomerang or the bow.  It would allow you to shoot in a different direction than how you're moving.  That's a big deal because I've had a few bosses kill me because in a hit and run attempt I shot in the wrong direction.  So stationary items like the sword are assigned to the shoulder button while "shooting" items belong to the touchscreen.  Then they design the game so that you never need two shooting or stationary items at the same time.

Another option would be to have the shoulder button solely as the sword button and all of the items use the touchscreen.  Where do you want to hookshot?  Point with the stylus.  Playing an instrument?  The stylus indicates the appropriate note.  You could even use the stylus to pick which direction your shield faces.  Block an arrow coming from behind while you dual with a sword-weilding guard.

"I think it should be 2D, but with a 3D engine, e.g. Super Smash Brothers. What advantage would it give you? Absolutely nothing, but we have 3D hardware, why not use it?"

Oh God.  That logic is so 1997.  Sprites rule.  If a game isn't fully 3D I say make it sprites or combine them Yoshi's Island style.

You could have the buttons for changing items. There's not that much you're doing in Zelda that couldn't be handled just by letting the player draw out an item and use it with the touchscreen. E.g. assign the bow to B, go into psition, press B to draw the bow and start aiming (lower screen changes to first person view), tap the screen to fire an arrow there or use the dpad to turn around (no running, you'll have to stop aiming either by pressing B again or maybe touching an area at the bottom of the touchscreen). All four buttons could be assigned to an item each, some items, like the boots or the feather wouldn't require to be drawn and activate with one button press.

But KDR wouldn't that control method require you to use the buttons and the touchscreen?  How do you do that?  How would you hold the stylus while you're pushing the buttons?  I like the idea of using the second screen for first person view though.

In fact the second screen lends itself perfectly to parallel worlds A Link to the Past style.  I'd be very surprised if they didn't incorporate that somehow.  Then in dungeons, naturally, the map could be up the whole time.  Yes that's the lamest DS feature of all time but if there was ever a game where you're constantly pausing to check the map it's Zelda.

"I've already voiced my concern over lever pulling so there's no point in arguing about it."

You voiced your concern that they'd focus on pulling levers rather than gameplay, which is as ludicrous as saying you're afraid they'd focus more on analog control (in OoT) and leave out gameplay.  As if they'd spend all their time focusing on how to move Link instead of the game.  It's a stupid thing to say.

my post was more a reaction to avoid kirby-killer raiding the DS forums...

but we can always come up with theories on how they are going to use the touchscreen, like for instance for the bow/slingshot you drag your thumb and release it to simulate shooting...

oh god, I want a DS now even more thats it, Im out of here.
