There should be a way to tell the noobies from the oldies
« on: August 19, 2003, 09:38:35 PM »
Well, at least I think so. No I'm not talking about posting peoples post counts either. I understand why that can be a bad thing. However I think it would be nice if under the posters avater it had a thing that said:   Joined: *put the date the person joined the boards here*. This would be a nice efficient and accurate way of knowing how long someones been here. The main reason why I thought of this was because I was surprised to find out in the thread "Who are the people from the Original Planet GameCube Boards that are still here today?" that a lot of the posters who I thought had been around for a long time were actually quite new and some that I thought were new had been around for a while.

The only problem with that is that when you know when someone joined, you treat them different.  Everybody does, and that's what I want to avoid.  Your own post proves that you judged people by the quality of their posts, rather than the date they joined, and that's EXACTLY what we're looking for.

I agree with Rick.  He said pretty much everything that I wanted to say, so I have nothing to add.  I do wish that post counts were displayed nonetheless, as I consider it to be sort of like a "score", but I realize that they cause more problems than anything, and they should be disabled.

The only way I could see being able to distinguish new people from old people is post count, and believe me, when everyone's post count is displayed, it becomes an all out race to see who can get the most the fastest. Look at IGN if you don't believe me.

you only want the post counts on cause you have the most (followed perhaps by me?) either way i dont mind, juding people on the quality of their posts is the best ofcourse, we are on a nintendo forums, lets follow their mantra of quality not quantity!

allthough... i spose it could be held for a trial basis, and if the amount of spam shoots through the roof, then obviously get rid of them, if everything stays the same keep it? (hrmm when did PGC become a democracy?)

Well it was kind of a race on the old boards too.  I know how many posts I have made and that fine with me.  I think this will be my 539th.  Kinda low, but the site has been slow.

If this was the old mouse_clicker, you would've been left in the dust looooooong ago. I got my first thousand posts at IGN in less than 4 weeks. I'm at about 1,800 on these boards so far.

I don't think there would really be much harm in having the "date joined" available in the "view users profile" thingy. I don't think people look in those very often anyways, or people already would be fighting for a bigger "score".

We don't seem to have a problem with people being judged that particular way, so why not make another detail available? Just for those who are interested enough to look.

Of course, that's just my opinion.

I once posted over 5000 posts in a day.    Mind you that was in a specific place, and it was basically just a spamming contest.  We didn't outright multiple post or anything, but our posts were all one line pieces of garbage that didn't really serve any point.

On the last forum I was a regular at, I had over 7000 when I left after a year.  Upon my exit, I requested my post count cut to zero though.

Whoa. . . Grey Ninja, you lack a life Nah, don't worry, I do to.

I'm around 1,200 here.  But I too would not mind if the posts stayed hidden (even though I just posted mine ).  Having a date joined accessible, though, either in the profile or under the avatar, isn't unreasonable.  It couldn't cause any sort of spam, though it could alter opinions.  Well, whatever.  Me do not mind either way, true?

I really don't post all that much, atleast compared to everyone else in this thread. I agree with rick though, quality over content.

I still think it would be a good idea to award a poster of the month just to set a good example for some of the newer guys, but hey, it is pretty obvious who the guys who know their stuff around here.

IGN had a one-post-a-minute rule, though, like they do here. Although one mod, Will_the_Thrill did post 10,000 times in 10 minutes. I have no idea how he did it, but he did.

At IGN right now I'm closing in on 9,000 posts, but I haven't posted regularly there since they locked the boards last February. The only reason I'm able to post now, besides on the free boards, is because a guy I know there got a friend of his to buy me Insider for a year. Should be running out soon, though.

Personally I think it's a lot better not to see people's post counts. At a lot of other forums I visit people are judged way too much by their post counts rather than what they have to say. I don't think it's a problem to see when someone joined the forum though, but it's really up to the admins of any particular forum if they want to enable that feature. Either way is fine with me.

Exactly! Now you don't have to justify not showing post counts.
